Demand & Campaign to make official language & State of Tulu Supporters
Date - 15th Jun 2021
On June 13, 2021, over 2.5 million people supported a Twitter campaign to make Tulu an official language in Kerala and Karnataka. Tulu is currently not the official language in the country. Tulu speakers and supporters of the Tulu language are making efforts to have Tulu included in the eighth annex of the Constitution.
Tulu is a Dravidian language. It is mainly spoken in southern Karnataka and the Kasaragod region of Kerala state, India. Tulu speakers are called Tuluwa and reside in the aforementioned regions in Karnataka and Kerala, informally called Tulu Nadu. According to the 2011 Census Report, there are 18,46,427 Tulu speakers in India. Some researchers argue that Tulu is one of the oldest Dravidian languages ??with a 2000-year history.
Tulu was named one of the most developed languages ??of the Dravidian family by Robert Caldwell in his book Comparative Grammar of the Dravidian or South Indian Language Family. The native speakers of the Tulu language, mainly living in Kerala and Karnataka, demanded that the Indian government give Tulu the status of an official language and include it in the eighth annex to the Constitution.
Demand for a separate state for Tulu Nadu
The Tuluvere Paksha political party supports the aspiration of the Tulu-speaking people to create a separate state for Tulu Nadu. The Election Commission of India recognized the political party in February 2021 under section 29A of the People's Representation Act 1951.
