Odisha Celebrates its Famous Festival Raja Parba

Date - 15th Jun 2021

The Raja Parba Festival began to be celebrated in Odisha on June 14, 2021. This is a three-day festival dedicated to femininity. It is believed that during this period Mother Earth is menstruating and preparing for future agricultural activities with the arrival of the rainy season.

This holiday is synonymous with the varieties of cakes (pith). For example, the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) has also launched a special program called Pita on Wheels. The women do not work for three days.

Raja Parba is also known as Mithuna Sankranti. It is a three-day festival to celebrate femininity in Odisha. The second day of the festival marks the beginning of the sunny month of Mithuna, in which the rainy season begins. It is believed that during the first three days, the mother of the Earth Goddess is menstruating. The fourth day is called Vasumati snana or Bhudevi's ceremonial bath. The name Raja comes from the Sanskrit word Rajas, which means menstruation. During a woman's period, she is called a "rajaswala" or menstruating woman. This festival became more popular in the Middle Ages as an agricultural festival dedicated to the worship of Bhudevi.

This festival falls in mid-June. The first day is called Pahili Raja, the second day is Mithuna Sankranti, and the third day is Bhudaaha or Basi Raja. The last fourth day is called basumati snana, during which women wash the whetstone as a symbol of Bhumi with turmeric paste. Bhumi offers all types of seasonal fruits. The day before the first day is called Sajabadja, during which they clean the house, the kitchen, including the grinding stones, and grind the spices for three days. Women and girls take a break from work.
