India has launched a Multi-State Hospital Expansion Project
Date - 14th Jun 2021
India has launched a Multi-State Hospital Expansion Project to fill a gap in India's core healthcare infrastructure to combat Covid-19.
The project will work primarily in rural areas and small towns. Modular hospitals are an extension of the hospital infrastructure. It will be built next to the existing hospital building. Against the backdrop of the second wave of COVID-19, hospital infrastructure has come under tremendous pressure. Thus, innovative modular hospitals will bring tremendous benefits.
Additional Hospitals Project
To initiate the project, the Office of the Chief Scientific Adviser (PSA) invited private sector companies, donor organizations and individuals. They will support the initiative along with several other projects of national importance. About 50 hospitals in the states where the highest number of COVID-19 cases have been reported were selected.
MediCAB hospitals
MediCAB hospitals were developed by Modulus Housing, a company based on IIT-M. This will make it possible to build an extension for 100 places in 3 weeks. MediCAB hospitals have been designed with a dedicated Intensive Care Unit (ICU) area that can house multiple life support equipment and medical devices. These portable hospitals have a lifespan of about 25 years. They could be carried over to any disaster response less than a week in the future.
