Coast Guard launched Operation Olivia

The Coast Guard recently enacted laws and launched Operation Olivia to protect the Olive Ridley turtles in Odisha. Operation Olivia was launched by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in the early 1980s. This operation helps protect the Olive Ridley turtles each year as they begin to nest along the Odisha coastline for breeding from November to December. It maintains 24/7 surveillance of Coast Guard assets such as fast patrol vessels, interceptors, hovercraft and Dornier aircraft from November to May.
From November 2020 to May 2021, the Coast Guard allocated 225 ship days and 388 flight hours. They protected 3.49 million turtles.

About Olive Ridley
The Olive Ridley turtles are listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. The sea turtles found in India were listed on Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife Conservation Act 1972. They are also listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Their mass nesting is called Arribada. Gahirmatha, Astaranga coast, the mouth of the Devi and Rushikul rivers are four arribad sites off the coast of Odisha in India. In addition, Hope Island in the Koringa Wildlife Sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh is also a preferred mass nesting site.
