UNICEF Study on Ethiopia’s Malnourished Children
Date - 14th Jun 2021
The United Nations Children's Agency, UNICEF, has warned about 33,000 severely malnourished children in the Tigray region of Ethiopia who are at high risk of death. The Tigray region has been devastated by fighting between government forces and insurgents, which have displaced an estimated 1.7 million people since the beginning of the conflict in November 2020.
UNICEF study
An UN-backed study found that 353,000 people in the Tigray region were living in dire crisis, while the Ethiopian government reversed the finding and said aid was ongoing. According to UNICEF, the food situation in the region has reached the level of disaster. It is defined as hunger and death that afflict small groups of people over large areas.
About 33,000 young children and babies are on the verge of illness and potential death from malnutrition. Two million people are on the brink of a severe crisis. The United States and the European Union have jointly asked all belligerents to agree to a ceasefire and allow aid to reach the millions in need. They called for a ceasefire to prevent large-scale famine.
What is the problem?
In November 2020, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ordered a ground and air military operation in Tigray. The operations were launched after the Tigray People's Liberation Front (NPF) (one of the ruling parties) was accused of attacking the camps of the federal army. As a result of this conflict, about a thousand people have died and about five million are in need of assistance. Actual tensions between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray Popular Liberation Front began with the appointment of Abiy Ahmed as the country's prime minister in 2018.
