PM Modi on UN Conference on Desertification, Land Degradation, and Drought

Date - 14th Jun 2021

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is ready to speak at a high-level virtual conference on desertification, land degradation and drought at the UN on June 14, 2021. The conference will be called by the President of the 75th session of the General Assembly, Volkan Bozkir.

Prime Minister Modi was President of the 14th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP14 President) in New Delhi in 2019, which adopted the Delhi Declaration to promote the transition and expand access to energy in rural and urban communities with the goal of combating desertification, land degradation and drought.

During this year's session, representatives from international organizations and civil society groups will speak at the conference to assess progress made in combating land degradation. They will also chart the way forward in global efforts to revitalize and restore healthy lands.

Why is land degradation a concern?

According to the United Nations, a fifth of the world's land mass (over 2 billion hectares) is degraded worldwide. It also includes more than half of all agricultural land. If land degradation continues at this rate and we do not change our soil management practices, more than 90 percent of land will be degraded by 2050. This will negatively affect one fifth of the planet's land area and the living standards of 3.2 billion people, which are 40 people. Percentage of the world's population. Land degradation also accelerates climate change and biodiversity loss and contributes to droughts, wildfires, forced migration and the emergence of zoonotic infectious diseases. Thus, this conference is gaining importance for raising awareness and taking preventive action.
