Description

Defense Minister Released a New policy for Declassification of War History

Date - 14th Jun 2021

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh approved a policy of declassifying war histories. In accordance with this policy, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) will archive, declassify, compile and publish the history of wars and operations.

However, declassification of old wars, such as the 1962 war, does not happen automatically. Declassification will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by a committee to be established under the new policy. According to the policy, the records are usually to be declassified after 25 years. Records over 25 years old must be assessed by archives experts and transferred to the National Archives of India after the history of war or operations has been compiled.

The committee will review earlier wars and operations. The collected history of wars and operations will be used primarily domestically, for five years. Thereafter, the committee may decide to publicly publish it in whole or in part, depending on the sensitivity of the subject.

On the composition of the created committee

According to the policy, a committee will be created, which will be headed by a joint secretary of the Ministry of Defense. It will include representatives from services, the Department of the Interior (MHA), the Department of Foreign Affairs (MEA), and prominent military historians to compile histories of war and operations. The committee's history department will be responsible for coordinating with the various departments in the compilation, approval and publication of the history of war and operations.

A proposal to write war stories with a clear declassification policy was recommended by the Kargil Review Committee, chaired by K. Subrahmanyam and N.N. Vohr Committee to review lessons learned and prevent future mistakes.
