Countries Elected to UN Security Council

Date - 12th Jun 2021

Countries including Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were elected without opposition to the powerful UN Security Council (UNSC) as non-permanent members for 2022-2023. The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has held elections to elect five non-permanent members of the UN Security Council. They will take their seats on the Council for a two-year term from January 1, 2022. Five countries won the elections without opposition because they were the only candidates from their respective regional groups.

Distribution of seats in the UN Security Council by region

According to the regional distribution in the 2021 elections, three seats were available from African and Asian states. Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates have won these three awards. In addition, one seat was available in the Latin American and Caribbean group for which Brazil was elected. While Albania took a place in the group of Eastern European countries.

Following countries are retiring

Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam will complete their two-year terms in the UN Security Council in 2021. Thus, new non-permanent members were elected to fill this seat. They will sit at the table with five permanent members - China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, and five non-permanent members - India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway. India will also alternate presidency of the Security Council in August.

Election of non-permanent members

Elections for non-permanent members of the UN Security Council are held by secret ballot. Candidates require a two-thirds majority in the UNGA to be elected as a non-permanent member. Five countries are elected to the 15-member Council (UNSC) as non-permanent members for two-year terms.
