Scholarship General Information 

Girl Up is a youth-centered leadership initiative focusing on equity for girls and women in spaces where they are unheard or underrepresented. We believe when girls and women are in positions of influence, they work to create a more just and equitable space for everyone. Girl Up aims to support its network of youth leaders around the world through financial awards, honorariums, and scholarships because we know that when you educate a girl, you educate a nation.

The Girl Up Scholarship Fund application is open to self-identified girls, young women, and gender non-conforming youth who were assigned female at birth, of all nationalities and backgrounds. Girl Up welcomes Scholarship Fund applications from all individuals regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, religion, cultural and ethnic background, disability, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.

Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for the Girl Up Scholarship Fund, applicants must:

1. Be a Girl Up member from anywhere around the world.

2. Enrolled in a 2-year, 4-year, or technical college by the time of selection.

3. Be pursuing education related to select categories:

Storytelling – If you are majoring in communications, creative writing, videography, graphic design, journalism, or a related field OR you are using storytelling to create change in your community.

Examples: Being on your school newspaper, organizing poetry readings, using your social media as a platform for change, etc.


Sports – If you are majoring in kinesiology, sports medicine, athletic training, sports administration and management, pre-physical therapy, physical education teaching, or a related field OR you are using sports to create change in your community.

Examples: Mentoring younger female athletes, playing a collegiate sport and using your platform for social good, increasing spectators at female sporting events, etc.


STEM – If you are majoring in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or a related field OR you are using STEM to create change in your community.

Examples: Teaching younger students to code, creating an app for social good, tutoring female students in STEM, etc.​​​​​​​

Award Amount  

1. The Girl Up Scholarship Fund offers scholarships to girls and young women who are passionate about gender equality and pursuing higher education.

2. Youth can apply twice per year and the funds are dispersed directly to the institutes of higher education.

3. Scholarships are 2, 500 USD (INR 2, 09, 902) per academic year.

4. After receiving their scholarships, youth work directly with Girl Up to create a social impact project in their community.

Application Procedure 

Applicants can apply online for the scholarship. Please note to prepare all the application materials in advance and then follow the instructions on the application page.

Application documents: 

a. 4 Essays.

Essay 1

In 500 or lower, describe the community in which you were brought up, how it influenced you, your upbringing, values, experience, and educational dreams. What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome?


Essay 2

In 250 words or less, explain how this scholarship will help you achieve your personal, professional or career-related goals. How can you improve gender equality through the scholarship categories?


Essay 3

In 250 words or less, say how have you advocated for gender equality in your community? In what manners have you shown your leadership strength by the activities relating to the fields?


Essay 4

Storytelling Applicants: In 500 words or less, provide an example of how you’re involved in storytelling (journalism, news broadcasting, poetry, etc.)? in what way have you used storytelling to effect a change in your community? How have your storytelling experiences helped you thrive as a leader?

Sports Applicants: In 500 words or less, give an instance of how you’re involved in sports (athlete, attendee, fan, etc.)? How have you used sports as a ground to bring a change in your community? How have sports developed you as a leader?

STEM Applicants: In 500 words or less, give an example of how you’re involved in STEM (area of study, club, work, etc.)? How have you treated STEM as a platform to make a change in your community? How has it developed you as a leader?

b. A video essay answering prompts in any of the fields you choose (see the link below for details).

c. One recommendation letter from an instructor, mentor, coach etc.

e. The biographical and demographical information

Selection Process 

1. Evaluation and selection criteria will be weighted for a competitive and fair evaluation. Selection criteria will include: 

2. Demonstrated commitment to gender equality.

3. Leadership potential. 

4. Community involvement and school activities. 

5. Educational and career goals and challenges. 

6. Past academic performance.

7. Applicant’s background (e.g. financial need, first-gen, DACA, disabilities, etc.) 

8. Letter of recommendation from an instructor, mentor, etc. and not a family member.
