Scholarship General Information
The Hans Bockler Foundation is the institute of the German Federation of Trade Unions (DGB) to promote research and studies. The HSB awards scholarships to doctoral students with outstanding academic gifts who show commitment to labor unions or socio-political issues. Doctoral candidates in any discipline who are enrolled at German institutions of higher education, also in programs such as graduate schools or junior researcher groups, are encouraged to apply.
Every year the HSB assigns about 100 grants. The scholars are paid EUR 1,450 per month plus a research cost allowance as well as family- and child allowances, if necessary. Comprehensive non-material support is also part of the scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria
Admission to post-graduate studies at a state or state-recognised institution of higher education in Germany.
Target Group
1. Particularly gifted doctoral candidates in any discipline who propose a promising doctoral project and show commitment to labour unions or socio-political issues
2. Candidates need to be admitted for doctoral studies a a state or state-recognised higher education institution. If possible, the doctoral project should have sociopolitical relevance and a meaningful contribution to research can be expected.
Award Amount
1. Doctoral students currently receive a grant of 1, 550 EUR (INR 1, 44, 688) (1,450 EUR (INR 1, 35, 358) basic grant plus a research cost allowance of 100 EUR (INR 9, 335)).
2. In addition, they receive a health insurance subsidy of up to 100 EUR (INR 9, 335) and, if applicable, a family allowance.

Selection Process
Scholarship applications are reviewed by an independent and voluntary selection committee. This may be made up of local and/or German university teachers, researchers and DAAD Lecturers. Depending on scholarship programme and the local situation, the best applicants may also be required to introduce themselves personally. This can take place either on site, face-to-face, or virtually.
Depending on programme, the selection decision is made either by the local selection committee directly or – in the case of a two-stage selection procedure – by another independent committee of academics in Germany. DAAD staff are not entitled to vote in the scholarship selection procedure.
The key selection criteria are:

5. School-leaving certificate, if applicable
6. Course of studies

Study project:
1. Quality of the study project and of the preparation (preliminary information, choice of degree programme, host university and establishment of contacts)
2. Integration of the project into the academic career path
3. Quality of the study project as well as the preparation (preliminary information, choice of study programme, host university and establishment of contacts)
Research project:
1. Quality of research proposal and preparation (originality, topicality and relevance of the project, choice of host institution and first contacts)
2. Feasibility and consistency of study plan and schedule
3. Incorporation of project within the overall doctorate (in terms of content and time), if relevant
4. Quality of the research project as well as the preparation (originality, topicality and relevance of the project, choice of host institution and establishment of contacts).
5. Feasibility and consistency of the work plan and timetable (analysis and evaluation steps)
6. Embedding of the project in the overall doctoral project (in terms of content/time), if relevant
Potential of the applicant
1. Motivation: academic and personal reasons for the stay in Germany, German language skills (if different from the working language);
2. Prospects: Significance of the stay in Germany for further academic, professional and personal development.
3. Extracurricular commitment: extracurricular knowledge and skills, social commitment.

6. In addition, in order to ensure equal opportunities, the selection committee may take into account special circumstances, which you can state in the application form. Examples of "special circumstances" are

f. refugee background
In these or comparable cases, disadvantages will be compensated for when assessing the application.
