Scholarship General Information 

Applications are invited for ASIA KAKEHASHI Project - Building Bridge between High School Students in Japan and Asia. A speech by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the banquet of the 23rd International Conference on ‘The Future of Asia’ stated that Japan will provide opportunities for Asian high school students studying Japanese to live in Japan for ten months.

AFS Intercultural Programs, Japan was appointed to implement the ASIA KAKEHASHI Project in collaboration with AFS Partner organizations and NGOs in Asia.

Content:

1. Invite high school students in Asia to study in Japan for 6–10 months

2. Study in a Japanese high school while staying with a host family or in the dormitory

3. Exposure to Japanese culture, local communities, and industries

Eligibility Criteria 

1. Be 15–18 years of age;

2.  Have the nationality of the sending country at the time of application;

3. Have obtained a minimum of 60% marks in principle in all subjects in the latest examination at school and an overall minimum average of 60% marks in all subjects for the past two years;

4. Be a Japanese language learner;

5. Demonstrate the strong potential of leadership to act as a bridge between the sending country and Japan during and after the program; And

6. Not participated in the ASIA KAKEHASHI program before. Priority will be given to students of families with low incomes.

Award Amount  

Annual Participants’ Numbers: 200

The scholarship covers domestic and international round-trip airfare, dormitory fees, normal school expenses, health insurance in Japan and all program costs.

Selection Process 

1. First All the application form will be evaluated.

2. After evaluation, eligible candidates will be shortlisted for the scholarship.

3. Shortlisting of candidates will be done by authorities.

Expenses not covered by the scholarship include, but are not limited, to:

1. Vaccinations and other medical examinations and documentation

2. Travel expenses to the regional Japanese consulate to obtain a visa

3. Additional spending money

4. Fees for additional or oversized luggage
