Scholarship General Information
The OIST Research Internship Program is being provided by the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) to UG and PG students or recent graduates with an academic background relevant to the desired host unit(s) at the OIST.
Eligibility Criteria
Application is open to students pursuing their final 2 years of a Bachelor's or any year of a Master's program, as well as those who have completed a degree. Applicants must have secured an approval from their home institution if currently enrolled and must possess a relevant academic background for the desired host unit(s) at the OIST. They should seek additional research experience and express interest in applying to the OIST’s PhD program in the future.
Award Amount
1. Internship Allowance (Stipend)
• You receive a daily allowance of approximately 2,400 Japanese Yen (JPY) or 1,398.67 Indian Rupee for each working day during the internship period. This is intended to help cover part of your living costs while in Okinawa.
2. Travel Support
• A round‑trip international airfare (one direct ticket) between your home institution/country and Okinawa, Japan is usually provided or reimbursed by OIST.
3. Accommodation
• You receive furnished campus accommodation (or near‑campus housing) for the duration of your internship, funded by OIST or the specific research unit hosting you.
4. Visa and Administrative Support
• OIST provides visa assistance (Certificate of Eligibility) and support with registration procedures once you’ve been accepted.
5. Transportation on Campus
• You often get a shuttle bus pass or local transport support to commute within campus or to research labs.
Work and Research Experience
• You will conduct research under the supervision of OIST faculty, work on real projects, gain practical lab skills, and be part of seminars or group activities in various science and technology disciplines.
No. of Scholarships Available
OIST does not publish a fixed or official number of internship positions available each year on its website. The exact number of interns selected depends on available faculty hosting space, available funding, research unit capacity, and applicant suitability. Acceptance is competitive and limited, and not all positions are guaranteed to be filled in each application round.
• Internships are typically awarded twice a year — once for the Spring/Summer period (approximately April to September) and once for the Fall/Winter period (approximately October to March).
• Within each intake period, OIST faculty make individual decisions on how many interns they can host, based on lab research availability and funding.
Important Dates
Last date to apply - 15 April 2026
Application Fee
There is an application fee required to apply for the OIST Research Internship.
The fee is approximately 3,000 Japanese Yen (JPY) or 1748 Indian Rupee (non‑refundable).
Fee waivers are not generally available, so you must plan to pay this when submitting your application.
Application Procedure
Application Timing
OIST usually opens applications twice a year for two internship terms:
• Spring/Summer intake (April – September)
• Fall/Winter intake (October – March)
Each cycle has its own deadline (for example, mid‑April for Fall programs).
Online Application Submission
Applications must be submitted through the official OIST online application portal on their admissions page.
You’ll need to create an account, upload all documents, and pay the application fee online before submission.
Required Documents
Curriculum Vitae (CV) — detailing your academic background and experience.
Statement of Purpose — a brief statement explaining your research interests and goals.
Academic Transcripts — from your current and prior degrees.
Recommendation Letters — usually 1–3 letters from professors or academic supervisors.
Passport copy and a recent photo.
English language proficiency scores (optional/not always required for the internship).
Selection Review
After submission, applications are reviewed competitively
— based on academic record, research fit with OIST units, and space/funding availability.
Faculty and program staff assess your suitability, and offers are sent out if you are selected.
Visa and Logistics
Once accepted, OIST assists with visa documentation (including Certificate of Eligibility if needed), travel planning, and accommodation arrangements before your arrival in Japan.
Selection Process
1. Online Application Review
When you submit your application online through the official portal, it is initially screened by the OIST admissions team. They check whether you have submitted all required documents (CV, academic transcripts, statement of interest, recommendation letter(s), passport info, etc.) and meet basic eligibility (undergraduate or master’s student or recent graduate in a relevant field).
2. Academic and Research Fit Evaluation
After the basic check, applications are evaluated based on your academic record, research experience, and relevance to OIST research areas. OIST does not require contacting faculty before applying; instead, you select preferred research units or areas of interest in your application, and the admissions/selection committee reviews how well your profile matches those units.
3. Statement of Interest and Recommendation Letters
Your statement of purpose / interest and letters of recommendation are key evaluation components. They help the reviewers assess your motivation, research potential, communication skills, and preparedness for an international research environment.
4. Availability of Projects and Funding
Even well‑qualified candidates are not guaranteed selection. Placement depends on available research projects, funding, and space in the desired research units for that internship cycle. Faculty and the admissions committee match selected interns with units based on these constraints.
5. Final Selection and Offer
Once decisions are made (typically several weeks after the application deadline), you'll be notified through the application portal and/or email whether you’ve been accepted. Only those selected receive an official offer.
6. No Mandatory Interview
There is generally no formal interview stage mentioned in official documentation for the research internship (unlike PhD admissions). The selection is largely paper‑based and merit‑based, driven by your submitted documents and how well they fit the research units’ needs.
Other Info
Work Expectations: Interns are expected to participate in hands-on research, lab work, seminars, and group activities. A final report may be required.
