Analysis
EXAM ANALYSIS
The RJS Mains 2025 was considerably more demanding than the Preliminary Examination because it tested candidates through descriptive and analytical legal questions. The focus shifted from simply identifying the correct provision to explaining the law, applying it to facts and presenting a legally reasoned answer.
The Mains required strong preparation in Civil Law, Criminal Law, procedural laws, substantive laws, Hindi and English. Candidates needed to demonstrate detailed knowledge of statutory provisions along with the ability to structure answers logically.
Bare Act knowledge remained fundamental, but it was not sufficient on its own. Candidates also needed to understand the practical application of provisions and use relevant case laws and judicial principles wherever appropriate.
The Civil Law papers required candidates to deal with substantive and procedural legal issues and apply the relevant provisions to factual situations. Precision in identifying the applicable provision and reaching a reasoned conclusion was important.
The Criminal Law portion tested understanding of substantive criminal law, criminal procedure and evidence. Candidates needed to demonstrate both knowledge of statutory provisions and the ability to apply criminal-law principles to given situations.
The Mains also placed considerable importance on answer-writing skills. Candidates had to manage their time carefully, structure answers properly and avoid spending excessive time on individual questions. A well-structured answer generally required identification of the issue, relevant law, application and a clear conclusion.
Overall Assessment
The RJS Mains 2025 was comparatively more demanding, as it required descriptive legal writing, conceptual clarity, statutory interpretation, application of law and appropriate use of case laws.
