Study Tips
STUDY TIPS
Preparing for the Bihar Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Exam requires a strategic approach, focusing on the syllabus, consistent practice, and physical fitness. With the Prelims scheduled for 18 and 21 January 2026, prioritize understanding the exam pattern (Prelims: General Knowledge & Current Affairs; Mains: General Hindi and General Studies), building speed and accuracy through mocks, and staying updated on Bihar-specific GK. Aim for daily study sessions of 6-8 hours, balancing theory, revision, and practice while incorporating physical training for PET/PST.
General Preparation Tips
Understand the Exam Structure and Syllabus: Start by thoroughly reviewing the official BPSSC syllabus for Prelims (General Knowledge & Current Affairs) and Mains (Paper 1: General Hindi; Paper 2: General Studies including History, Geography, Polity, Science, Civics, Math, and Mental Ability). Know the marking scheme: 200 marks each for Prelims and Mains papers, with 0.2 negative marking for wrong answers. This helps identify high-weightage topics like Current Affairs (30-40% in Prelims) and Bihar GK.
Create a Realistic Study Schedule: Divide your time based on your availability—full-time aspirants can aim for 8-10 hours daily, while working candidates should target 4-6 hours. Include breaks to avoid burnout (e.g., Pomodoro technique: 25 minutes study + 5 minutes break). Track progress weekly and adjust as needed.
Prioritize Important Topics: Focus on scoring sections first—Current Affairs, Reasoning, and Math in Prelims/Mains. Don't underestimate General Hindi (qualifying but crucial); practice grammar and comprehension daily. For General Studies, emphasize Bihar-specific content (e.g., history, geography, schemes) as it carries significant weight.
Build Strong Fundamentals: Use NCERT books (Class 6-12) for basics in History, Geography, Polity, Science, and Math. Supplement with standard references like Lucent's GK for static portions and Pratiyogita Darpan for current affairs.
Daily Current Affairs Habit: Read newspapers (The Hindu, Indian Express) or apps like Adda247/PW for 30-45 minutes daily. Note down Bihar-related news, national/international events, awards, sports, and schemes. Revise weekly to retain facts.
Practice Regularly: Solve at least 50-100 MCQs daily from previous years' papers (2019-2024 available on BPSSC site). Attempt full-length mocks weekly to simulate exam conditions—aim for 120-140 marks in Prelims mocks for safety.
Mock Tests and Analysis: Take 1-2 mocks per week post-syllabus completion. Analyze errors: Categorize into conceptual gaps, silly mistakes, or time issues. Focus on weak areas in subsequent sessions. Platforms like Testbook, Adda247, or Embibe offer free Bihar SI-specific mocks.
Time Management in Exam: Practice solving papers within 2 hours. Allocate time: 30-40 minutes for Current Affairs/GK, 40-50 for Reasoning/Math. Skip tough questions initially and return later.
Health and Mindset: Maintain a balanced diet, sleep 7-8 hours, and exercise daily for PET readiness. Stay motivated—join online forums (e.g., Telegram groups for Bihar SI) for doubt-solving and peer motivation. Avoid last-minute cramming; focus on revision.
Subject-Wise Study Tips
Prelims: General Knowledge & Current Affairs
Cover last 12-18 months' events (focus on Bihar: schemes like Mukhyamantri Kanya Utthan Yojana, floods/disasters).
Tips: Make flashcards for facts (e.g., capitals, awards). Practice 20-30 questions daily; aim for 60-70% accuracy.
Mains Paper 1: General Hindi
Focus on grammar (Vyakaran: Sangya, Sarvanam, Visheshan, Kriya), synonyms/antonyms, idioms, comprehension.
Tips: Read Hindi newspapers (Dainik Jagran) for 20 minutes daily. Practice essay/letter writing weekly. Don't ignore as it's qualifying (30% minimum).
Mains Paper 2: General Studies
History & Civics: Ancient/Medieval/Modern India (focus Freedom Struggle); Bihar history (e.g., Mauryan Empire). Tips: Use timelines for retention.
Geography: Physical/Indian/World (rivers, climate, Bihar resources). Tips: Draw maps for visual memory.
General Science: Basics from Physics/Chemistry/Biology (human body, diseases). Tips: Relate to daily life for better understanding.
Mathematics: Number systems, percentages, ratio, profit/loss, time/work. Tips: Practice formulas daily; solve 20-30 problems.
Mental Ability/Reasoning: Puzzles, series, coding-decoding, blood relations. Tips: Practice 15-20 questions; focus on speed.
Physical Efficiency Test (PET)/Physical Standard Test (PST)
Start early: Dedicate 1-2 hours daily to fitness.
Tips: Running (build to 1.6 km in 6.5 min for males/1 km in 6 min for females); High Jump (practice 4 ft male/3 ft female); Shot Put (16 ft male/12 ft female). Include strength training (push-ups, sit-ups). Track progress weekly.

Aim for daily study sessions of 6-8 hours, balancing theory, revision, and practice while incorporating physical training for PET/PST.
General Preparation Tips
Understand the Exam Structure and Syllabus: Start by thoroughly reviewing the official BPSSC syllabus for Prelims (General Knowledge & Current Affairs) and Mains (Paper 1: General Hindi; Paper 2: General Studies including History, Geography, Polity, Science, Civics, Math, and Mental Ability). Know the marking scheme: 200 marks each for Prelims and Mains papers, with 0.2 negative marking for wrong answers. This helps identify high-weightage topics like Current Affairs (30-40% in Prelims) and Bihar GK.
Create a Realistic Study Schedule: Divide your time based on your availability—full-time aspirants can aim for 8-10 hours daily, while working candidates should target 4-6 hours. Include breaks to avoid burnout (e.g., Pomodoro technique: 25 minutes study + 5 minutes break). Track progress weekly and adjust as needed.
Prioritize Important Topics: Focus on scoring sections first—Current Affairs, Reasoning, and Math in Prelims/Mains. Don't underestimate General Hindi (qualifying but crucial); practice grammar and comprehension daily. For General Studies, emphasize Bihar-specific content (e.g., history, geography, schemes) as it carries significant weight.
Build Strong Fundamentals: Use NCERT books (Class 6-12) for basics in History, Geography, Polity, Science, and Math. Supplement with standard references like Lucent's GK for static portions and Pratiyogita Darpan for current affairs.
Daily Current Affairs Habit: Read newspapers (The Hindu, Indian Express) or apps like Adda247/PW for 30-45 minutes daily. Note down Bihar-related news, national/international events, awards, sports, and schemes. Revise weekly to retain facts.
Practice Regularly: Solve at least 50-100 MCQs daily from previous years' papers (2019-2024 available on BPSSC site). Attempt full-length mocks weekly to simulate exam conditions—aim for 120-140 marks in Prelims mocks for safety.
Mock Tests and Analysis: Take 1-2 mocks per week post-syllabus completion. Analyze errors: Categorize into conceptual gaps, silly mistakes, or time issues. Focus on weak areas in subsequent sessions. Platforms like Testbook, Adda247, or Embibe offer free Bihar SI-specific mocks.
Time Management in Exam: Practice solving papers within 2 hours. Allocate time: 30-40 minutes for Current Affairs/GK, 40-50 for Reasoning/Math. Skip tough questions initially and return later.
Health and Mindset: Maintain a balanced diet, sleep 7-8 hours, and exercise daily for PET readiness. Stay motivated—join online forums (e.g., Telegram groups for Bihar SI) for doubt-solving and peer motivation. Avoid last-minute cramming; focus on revision.
Subject-Wise Study Tips
Prelims: General Knowledge & Current Affairs
Cover last 12-18 months' events (focus on Bihar: schemes like Mukhyamantri Kanya Utthan Yojana, floods/disasters).
Tips: Make flashcards for facts (e.g., capitals, awards). Practice 20-30 questions daily; aim for 60-70% accuracy.
Mains Paper 1: General Hindi
Focus on grammar (Vyakaran: Sangya, Sarvanam, Visheshan, Kriya), synonyms/antonyms, idioms, comprehension.
Tips: Read Hindi newspapers (Dainik Jagran) for 20 minutes daily. Practice essay/letter writing weekly. Don't ignore as it's qualifying (30% minimum).
Mains Paper 2: General Studies
History & Civics: Ancient/Medieval/Modern India (focus Freedom Struggle); Bihar history (e.g., Mauryan Empire). Tips: Use timelines for retention.
Geography: Physical/Indian/World (rivers, climate, Bihar resources). Tips: Draw maps for visual memory.
General Science: Basics from Physics/Chemistry/Biology (human body, diseases). Tips: Relate to daily life for better understanding.
Mathematics: Number systems, percentages, ratio, profit/loss, time/work. Tips: Practice formulas daily; solve 20-30 problems.
Mental Ability/Reasoning: Puzzles, series, coding-decoding, blood relations. Tips: Practice 15-20 questions; focus on speed.
Physical Efficiency Test (PET)/Physical Standard Test (PST)
Start early: Dedicate 1-2 hours daily to fitness.
Tips: Running (build to 1.6 km in 6.5 min for males/1 km in 6 min for females); High Jump (practice 4 ft male/3 ft female); Shot Put (16 ft male/12 ft female). Include strength training (push-ups, sit-ups). Track progress weekly.
