Who is Eligible

Class 12th Pass


1. As an Emergency Medical Technician, you will be responding to emergency calls to provide emergency medical support and care to patients who are critically ill or injured. You will be responsible for transporting the patients to a medical facility within a stipulated time limit. 

2. As an Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic), you will be administering medications, starting intravenous lines for injecting medicines or IV fluids (like saline, dextrose, etc.), providing advanced airway management for patients, and learning to resuscitate and support patients with significant problems such as heart attacks and traumas. You will be supervising other EMTs and other emergency medical responders who have less training than they do. You will be responsible for performing medical services and transporting patients to medical facilities.

3. As an EMT Paramedic, you will be working in an ambulance that is equipped with all life support medications and machinery. You will also be initiating advanced life support measures, which include the use of a defibrillator, intravenous therapy along with a connection to mechanical breathing devices. You will be providing or supervising basic life support such as CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation). You will be performing and interpreting medical tests by using equipment such as electrocardiogram machines. In cases of poisoning or drug overdose, you will have to administer antidotes.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

As an Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic), you will have the following roles and responsibilities:

1. You will be analyzing the emergencies, and the severity of the patient’s illness or injury and then prioritize the first level of medical procedures accordingly.

2. You will be administrating basic first aid and life support care facilities to prevent patient conditions from worsening before they reach the hospital.

3. You will be performing emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures, such as stomach suction, airway management, or heart monitoring, during the ambulance ride.

4. You will have to ensure that the medical equipment and first aid supplies are always replenished after providing treatments to patients.

5. You will have to record, observe, and report (to the physician) the patient’s condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment if any.

6. You might have to comfort and reassure the patient as well as the visitors or relatives.   

7. You need to make sure that the workstation is clean, sanitized, and organized.

8. You will be coordinating work with other EMTs police or other departments if required.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies – Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry, and Biology along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies – Obtain an NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Emergency Medical Technician-Basic.

After completing class 12, you can obtain an NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 4 Qualification in Emergency Medical Technician-Basic. This NSQF Level 4 qualification training in Emergency Medical Technician-Basic is 360 hours of duration (i.e., 240 hours for classroom and skill lab training + 120 hours of Clinical or Laboratory Training).

After completing class 12 in school or after obtaining an NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 4 Qualification in Emergency Medical Technician-Basic with a minimum of 3 years of experience, you can obtain an NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 5 Qualification in Emergency Medical Technician-Advanced. This NSQF Level 5 qualification in Emergency Medical Technician-Advanced is 1000 hours of duration (i.e., 750 hours for classroom and skill lab training + 250 hours of Clinical or Laboratory Training).

After completing class 12, you may apply for a Certificate in Emergency Medical Technician (Basic and Advanced) from any vocational or private institute. Nowadays various private institutions, as well as some private foundations are providing certification in Emergency Medical Technician (Basic and Advanced, both).

Required Qualification & Competencies 

After completing Class12, you can:

1. Obtain NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Emergency Medical Technician-Basic.

2. Obtain NSQF Level 5 Qualification in Emergency Medical Technician-Advanced (after completing class 12 or after obtaining NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Emergency Medical Technician-Basic with a minimum of 3 years of experience).

3. Apply for a Certificate in Emergency Medical Technician (Basic or Advanced or both).

1. At the beginning of your career, you may find job opportunities as an assistant or intern or Primary Care Emergency Medical Technician. Later on, after gaining experience, you may become an Emergency Medical Technician or Advanced Emergency Medical Technician. 

2. You may find job opportunities in various Government as well as Private Hospitals, community health centers, nursing homes, doctor’s clinics, and other health care facilities.


Work Environment

As an EMT Paramedic, you will be working in all types of weather conditions. You will be working in a physically strenuous and stressful situation. As an EMT Paramedic, your major activities involve kneeling, bending, and lifting while caring for and moving patients, which can cause a higher rate of injuries. You might be exposed to some contagious health diseases, such as hepatitis B and AIDS. You will be working as a full-time worker usually for more than 40 hours a week sometimes you might have to work overnight and on weekends too.


Specialisation Tracks In This Career

1. Emergency Medical Technician-Basic

As an EMT-Basic, you will be involved in providing emergency medical support and care to patients who are critically ill or injured and transporting them to a medical facility or hospital within the stipulated time limits.


2. Emergency Medical Technician-Advanced

As an EMT-Advanced, you will be trained in providing an advanced level of care to patients with significant problems such as heart attacks and traumas. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians are more trained and interned so that they can provide a greater range of medication and perform more procedures.


Career Growth

With an Emergency Medical Technician career, you may find limited job opportunities. After gaining certain experience along with some higher training/qualification you may move from Basic Emergency Medical Technician to Advanced Emergency Medical Technician.

Salary Offered  

1. At the beginning of your career, you may earn about Rs. 5,000 – 12,500 per month.

2. With 3-5 years of experience, you may earn about Rs. 10,000-18,000 or even more per month.

3. With 8-10 years of experience, you may earn about Rs. 15,000 – 25,000 or even more per month.

4. In Government jobs or Government hospitals, you may look forward to much higher earnings. You will begin with about Rs. 18,000- 22,000 a month. You will get yearly increments and you may look forward to earning about Rs. 30,000 – 70,000 a month after 11-15 years of experience.

1. Employment for EMT or EMT Paramedics is projected to grow much faster than the average for all other occupations. Emergencies such as car crashes, natural disasters, acts of violence, or other sudden casualties like sudden heart stroke, brain hemorrhage, etc. have created demand for EMT Paramedics.

2. As per a report by IBEF (Indian Brand Equity Foundation) in India, the Healthcare market is expected to reach US$ 372 billion. It is also expected that the hospital industry will grow by a CAGR of 16-17% (Compounded Annual Growth RATE). So, the employment for the Emergency Medical Technician is projected to grow quite fast.
