About Career 

As an Ayurveda doctor, you will use the holistic approach and techniques of Ayurveda medicine originating from India to help your patient maintain a healthy life, eliminate impurities, reduce stress and fight diseases. Ayurveda practice is based on observation techniques. Through these techniques, you will focus on the interconnection of the body, mind, the spirit of the patient and assess the wellbeing of him or her. As an ayurvedic doctor, you will also assess the dietary habits of patients, assist them in lifestyle choices and diagnose their mental state. Once you understand or diagnose the cause of the imbalance in the patient, you will treat the patient with the best of the remedies. You will diagnose each patient individually and the treatment may differ for each one of them through different diet, lifestyle advice, medication, yoga, massages, herbal supplements, counselling or specialised therapies.

Key roles and responsibilities

As an Ayurveda doctor, you will have different roles and responsibilities based on your speciality and super speciality. Following is the list of a few roles and responsibilities across the specialities:

1. As an Ayurveda Doctor, you will prescribe medicines, administer treatment, therapy, medication, and messaging as per Ayurveda Medical school

2. You will advise on physical exercises, diets and other related aspects for helping a patient recover from an illness or disorder.

3. You will address concerns or answer questions that patients have about their health and well-being.

4. You will collect, record, and maintain patient information, including medical history, reports, or examination results. 

5. You will ensure the safety of patients and guests throughout the day and night.

6. As an Ayurveda Doctor working with AYUSH, you will visit each sub-centre under your areas once a week.

7. You will organize and participate in a health day organized at the Anganwadi centre.

8. You will assist the senior medical officer.

9. You will receive patients at any odd hour for any clinical assistance.

10. You will be conducting a Prakriti analysis

11. You will prescribe ayurvedic Herbs for lifestyle-related conditions and obesity

12. You will make diet and nutritional plans as per Ayurveda.

13. You will follow the progress of the patient through regular follow-ups.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies – Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry, and Biology along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies – UG in Ayurveda Medicine & Surgery.

After your Class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies, complete Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry, and Biology along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies, and then study for an undergraduate degree in Ayurveda Medicine & Surgery.

After your Class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies, complete Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry, and Biology along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies, and then study for an undergraduate degree in Ayurveda Medicine & Surgery followed by M.D./ M.S. in Ayurveda Medicine & Surgery.

After your Class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies, complete Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry, and Biology along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies, and then study for an undergraduate degree in Ayurveda Medicine & Surgery followed by M.D./ M.S. in Ayurveda Medicine & Surgery. Required Qualification & Competencies 

To become an Ayurvedic Doctor, you will have to do a Bachelor's degree in Ayurvedic Medicine and surgery. This is a 4.5-year course followed by a one-year internship. After BAMS, you may opt to do an M.D. in Ayurveda, specializing in any one of the following fields or any other related fields:

Career - Job Opportunities & Profiles 

1. After your B.A.M.S., you can join a medical college like a private hospital, government hospital, AYUSH Centre, Ayurveda center, etc. as a junior resident doctor and continue your M.D. studies.

2. You can join hospitals, clinics, etc. as a Medical Duty Officer.

3. You can also join an Ayurvedic medical college at the rank of Assistant Professor.

4. Different state Public Service Commissions (Ayurveda Department) will hire you for different Posts like Medical Superintendent.


Work Environment

You would be required to spend most of your time in the clinic, hospitals, and healthcare. As an Ayurveda doctor, you will be treating patients in normal working hours of 8-9 hours only. Most of your work will require listening to patients’ problems, their sicknesses, and their issues. This is a job with an intense work environment that needs the patience to listen. Sometimes, you may be asked or requested to visit patients at their place and this may even happen sometimes during odd night hours. As a doctor, you should be ready to visit a patient at any time as they will always be in a medical emergency. Sometimes, even in hospitals, you would be requested to visit at odd hours or asked to work late when some endemic diseases are hitting the city or town.

1. Ayurveda Doctor (Prasuti Tantra & Streeroga)

Ayurveda Doctor (Prasuti Tantra & Streeroga) is a specialist in Ayurvedic Gynaecology, Obstetrics, and Paediatrics. They deal with Streeroga (women's problems), pregnancy, labor, and the management of diseases prevalent in women. They are responsible for antenatal and postnatal care, common gynecological problems, and menopausal syndrome.


2. Ayurveda Doctor of Shalakya Tantra (Netra Roga Vigyana)

Ayurveda doctors of Shalakya Tantra (Netra Roga Vigyana) deal with the problems related to eye care (ophthalmology). They provide medical care for certain eye diseases including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts.


3. Ayurveda Doctor of Shalya Tantra (Samanya)

1. My career growth in university and college started as an Assistant Professor and then as Associate Professor, Professor, and Professor Emeritus. Professors can also get administrative positions such as Director/Dean/Vice Chancellor, etc

2. If you Join as a Medical Officer, then you will go on to become Deputy Medical Superintendent then Additional Medical Superintendent, and then Medical Superintendent. You might also become the director of the Hospital.

3. If you join as Medical Superintendent, then you may become Assistant Director, Additional Director, and then Director of Ayurveda Medicine.

Salary Offered  

1. At the entry-level, one joins as a Medical Officer and earns about Rs. 30,000 – 50,000 a month. With experience, their salary increases. Medical Superintendent earns from Rs. 56,000 to 1,77,000 per month. In private hospitals, you will earn around Rs. 25,000 to 50,000 per month.

2. At the junior level with a work experience of 5-6 years, you would be earning anything between Rs. 50,000 to 2,00,000 per month.

3. At the middle level with an experience of 8-12 years, you would be earning anything between Rs. 1,40,000 to 2,25,000 per month.

4. At the senior level of over 12 years of work experience, you would be earning anything between Rs. 1,50,000 to 2,50,000 per month or even more.

Future Prospects 

Indian Medical industry is growing exponentially riding on strong demand due to rising incomes, greater health awareness, and an increase in access to insurance. With the introduction of Ayushman Bharat, Insurance and medical benefits are given by the Government of India, and more and more people will start using medical facilities. With a separate department of AYUSH, the government is pushing for Ayurveda medicine as well. Presently Rajasthan, Himachal, Up, West Bengal, Bihar, and Maharashtra have a separate department for Ayurveda Medicine.
