As a Sports Medicine Consultant, you will specialize in the treatment of injuries acquired by sportsperson while playing. You will also work to ensure that the physical fitness of sportsperson is maintained and you will also prevent them from injuries occurring from participation in sports and exercise activities. As a Sports Medicine Consultant, you will have the expertise in primary care, surgery (related to orthopedic), orthopedics, emergency medicine, nutrition, physiotherapy, Psychology, etc.  You will, however, focus only on the treatment and prevention of injuries resulting from participation in sports and exercise activities. Most professional sports clubs and teams have Sports Medicine Consultants on the rolls of their support staff.

Key roles and responsibilities

As a Sports Medicine Consultant, you will be required to perform several duties including the following:

1. You would be required to diagnose or treat disorders of the musculoskeletal system.

2. You will order and interpret the results of laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging procedures to the athlete.

3. You will give proper advice and guidance to the athlete before he or she returns to the games or start competing.

4. You will record the medical care information of the athlete and maintain all medical records for future use.

5. You will record the medical history of the athlete and perform physical examination accordingly.

6. You will need to consult with other physicians to ensure proper treatment evaluation and follow-up treatment.

7. You will write the daily progress report of hospitalized athletes.

8. You will advise them about exercise and fitness programmes. 

9. If you are working with a sports team, you will take care of the fitness of each athlete.

10. If you work in a hospital or clinic, you will examine the sportsperson when they are admitted, do the initial diagnosis, plan the treatment and ensure proper execution of the plan.

11. You will formulate a summary of discharge once the sportsperson is discharged.

12. You will keep yourself updated with al latest research, developments, techniques in the field of medicine and surgery.

13. You will supervise all medical, paramedical and nurses and other staff of the department and push them to maintain high standards.

14. You will make sure that the quality of investigation and reports. You will also eliminate any errors in the procedure.

15. You will ensure that all patient safety policies are followed within your department.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies– Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies – UG in Medicine & Surgery – PG in Sports Medicine (M.D.)

After Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies, then study for an undergraduate degree in Medicine & Surgery followed by a master’s degree in Sports Medicine (M.D.).

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies– Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies – UG in Medicine & Surgery – M.S. in Orthopaedic Surgery – M.Ch. in Orthopedics Surgery

After Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies, then study for an undergraduate degree in Medicine & Surgery followed by M.S. in Orthopaedic Surgery and then M.Ch. in Orthopedics Surgery. Sports Surgery is not a different specialty, but it comes under Orthopedics Surgery only.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies– Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology along with any other subject as per scheme of studies – UG in Medicine & Surgery – PG in Sports Medicine (M.D.) – Ph.D. in Sports Medicine

After Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology along with any other subject as per scheme of studies and then study for an undergraduate degree in Medicine & Surgery followed by a master’s degree in Sports Medicine (M.D.). After the M.D. course, you can continue for a Ph.D. in Sports Medicine.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies– Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies – UG in Medicine & Surgery – PG in Sports Medicine (D.N.B.)

After Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology along with any other subject as per scheme of studies and then study for an undergraduate degree in Medicine & Surgery followed by a master’s degree in Sports Medicine (D.N.B.).

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies– Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies – UG in Medicine & Surgery – PG in Sports Medicine (M.D.) / Orthopedics (D.N.B.) or M.D. – Fellowship such as FRCS in Sports Medicine / MRCP in Sports Medicine

After your secondary level of schooling in any subjects with science & Mathematics, you can study science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in your higher secondary school and then study for an undergraduate degree in Medicine & Surgery followed by a master’s degree in Sports Medicine (M.D.) or D.N.B. After the D.N.B. /M.D. course, you can continue with Fellowship such as FRCS in Sports Medicine / MRCP in Sports Medicine. MRCP is Member of the Royal College of Physicians, UK.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

Undergraduate studies after school:

1. To become a Sports Medicine Physician, you should complete your schooling with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology and join for an undergraduate course of M.B.B.S.

Doctoral studies:

1. After finishing M.B.B.S., you can opt for M.D (Sports Medicine).

2. Alternatively, you can also complete a D.N.B. or M.S. in Orthopedics

Post-Doctoral Studies:

1. After Completing M.D. or D.N.B., you can continue with a fellowship in Sports Medicine. In many Foreign Universities, they also offer Super Speciality in Sports Medicine after M.D.

2. After Completing M.S., you can pursue M.Ch. in Orthopaedics Surgery.

3. Alternatively, you can also do Fellowship the Royal College of Surgeon (FRCS) in the UK.

4. You can also do MRCP from the UK.

2. You can also join the medical college at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Work Environment

As a Sports Medicine Consultant, you would be required to spend most of the time in the clinic or hospital. However, sometimes you might have to visit sportsperson. If you are working for a sports team, then most of the time you will spend with the team at their training camp and on the field. The work times are flexible and non-regular. Even working beyond the working hours is common. You need to be fit and agile and have excellent stamina. IF you are a sports surgeon, then you will spend most of the time performing small to long duration surgeries that can also go beyond working hours.  You will spend a lot of time in the surgery room standing only, so it can be tiresome.

SPECIALISATION TRACKS IN THIS CAREER

Sports Surgeon

Sports surgeons specialise in the diagnosis of athletes’ diseases and perform surgeries for cure and prevention of the diseases and ailments which require surgical treatment. As a surgeon, you will perform surgery on a particular diseased part or organ of the human body. Before surgery, you will review the history of the sportsperson, carry out diagnostic procedures, find out about any allergies, and determine if they can be treated with surgery in the present condition.

CAREER GROWTH

1. The career growth in university and college states from Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor, Professor and Professor Emeritus. Professors can also get administrative positions such as Director/Dean/Vice Chancellor, etc

2. If you join as a Consultant Physician (Sports Medicine), then you will go on to become Deputy Medical Superintendent and then Additional Medical Superintendent and then Medical Superintendent. You might also become director of the Hospital.

3. If you join Army hospitals (for army sports teams), then you will move up as per the army ranks starting from Captain (and its equivalent in Navy and Air Force).

Salary Offered  

After completion of M.D. / D.N.B. course.

1. At the entry level, one joins as a Consultant Physician and earn about Rs. 80,000 – 1,20,000 a month. With experience, their salary increases.

2. At the junior level with a work experience of 5-6 years, you would be earning anything between Rs. 1,00,000 to 2,00,000 per month.

3. At the middle level with an experience of 8-12 years, you would be earning anything between Rs. 1,40,000 to 3,00,000 per month.

4. At the senior level of over 12 years of work experience, you would be earning anything between Rs. 2,40,000 to 6,00,000 per month or even more.

After Completing D.M. (Orthopedics) or FRCS/MRCP course:

1. At the entry level, you can earn about Rs. 1,50,000 – 2,00,000 a month. With experience, their salary increases.

2. At the junior level with a work experience of 5-6 years, you would be earning anything between Rs. 2,00,000 to 3,00,000 per month.

3. At the middle level with an experience of 8-12 years, you would be earning anything between Rs. 2,50,000 to 5,00,000 per month.

4. At the senior level of over 12 years of work experience, you would be earning anything between Rs. 3,00,000 to 12,00,000 per month or even more.

MONTHLY EARNINGS IN INDIAN RUPEES

1. Entry level: 0 - 2 years of work experience  

2. Junior Level: From 1 to 12 years of work experience

3. Mid Level: From 5 to 20+ years of work experience

4. Senior Level: From 10 to 25+ years of work experience (there could be exceptions in some high-end technical, financial, engineering, creative, management, sports, and other careers; also in the near future, people will reach these levels much faster in many careers and in some careers, these levels will have no meaning as those careers will be completely tech skill driven such as even now, there is almost no level in a Cyber Security Expert’s job)

As a Sports Medicine Consultant, you might have different roles and responsibilities. Some of the work activities in these roles are:

1. Observing, hearing, reading, using computers, or otherwise obtaining information and learning from it.

2. Keeping updated with the latest knowledge relevant to your fields of work and use of the relevant knowledge in getting things done.

3. Communicating with people in writing, verbally or otherwise inside your workplace and various other people who have professional relationships with your place of work including vendors, government officials, etc. or with people at large.

4. Analysis of data and information; evaluation of alternative decisions and results of decisions; taking the right decisions and solving problems

5. Assisting people in availing of services; taking care of people in different situations; offering help and services to others.

Future Prospects 

Indian Medical industry is growing exponentially riding on strong demand due to rising incomes, greater health awareness and increase in access to insurance. It might grow to 373 Billion USD in 2022 as per a report by ibef.org. Also, with the introduction of Ayushman Bharat, Insurance and the medical benefit are given by Government of India; more and more people will start using medical facilities. The hospital industry is expected to 16-17% per year from 2017 to 2022. All these numbers indicate a bright future for Physicians and Surgeons. 

At the same times, Indian Sports is on the rise, with Sports Ministry promoting sports through Khelo India, the attention is on different rising sports. The facility given to our sportsperson under Khelo India will mean more career opportunities for Sports medicine Physicians and Surgeons.
