Sports Managers specialize in the business-related matters related to sports. As a Sports Manager, you will handle sports teams, athletes, sportspersons and sports events at various levels from school to college and national to International. You will manage the administrative offices of sports teams; you will manage sports marketing; you will manage sports event; manage sports facilities (like stadiums); etc.

As a Sports Manager, you will also take care of the finances of the team, sponsorships, etc. You will also be the contact person for the media related to sports information. You will work and negotiate for the contract with sponsors, trade deals, handle PR and media. You will also organize promotional events, hire coaches, search for sports talent, etc. Even managing a sports kit is a part of a sports manager. These days, the Sports Manager also works on sports analytics.

Key roles and responsibilities

As a Sports Manager, you will have several specializations. However, each of these specializations will have a few of all of these roles and responsibilities:

1. If you are working as a sports manager of the sports team, then you will be responsible for its facilities.

2. You will be responsible for the travelling, lodging, food, etc. of the sports team.

3. You will be responsible for sponsors, kits, etc.

4. You will be responsible for the PR activities, interviews, etc. of the team and its individual players.

5. You will be managing the finance related issues of the team.

6. You will be responsible for every not sports related problem of the team and its staff.

7. If you are working with sports channels or media as sports analysts then you will be responsible for analysing each match.

8. You will be responsible for bringing the past performance of players and team and analyse them to predict future results.

9. You will develop several insights about different players.

10. You will present your analysis on air or Tv or reports.

11. If you are working at a sports facility, then you will be responsible for opening and closing of the sports facility on time.

12. You will be required to do daily rounds and check-ups of the facility. You will also be maintaining the facility and its properties.

13. You will be keeping in touch with the sports authorities, civic authorities, etc.

14. You will keep in touch with the booking parties and members and follow up in case of any discrepancies.

15. You will be responsible for any conflict management at the facility and communicate the same to the management of the facility.

16. You will be taking new bookings for the ground.

After Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies and then study for an undergraduate degree in any Discipline followed by a master’s degree in Business Administration / Finance / Marketing / Human Resource Management / Business Management / Foreign Trade / Operations Management / Information Technology / and related subjects.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies – UG in Business Administration and related subjects – PG in Business Administration / Finance / Marketing / Human Resource Management / Business Management / Foreign Trade / Operations Management / Information Technology / Hotel Management / and related subjects.

After Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies and then study for an undergraduate degree in Business Administration followed by a master’s degree in Business Administration / Finance / Marketing / Human Resource Management / Business Management / Foreign Trade / Operations Management / Information Technology / Hotel Management / and related subjects. Although anyone can complete a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, having same at UG level helps.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies – UG in any stream – work in the industry for 2-5 years – PG in Business Administration / Finance / Marketing / Human Resource Management / Business Management / Foreign Trade / Operations Management / Information Technology / Hotel Management / and related subjects.

After Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies and then study for an undergraduate degree in any Discipline and then work in the industry for a few years. Now, you can join an Executive Master’s course in Business Administration / Finance / Marketing / Human Resource Management / Business Management / Foreign Trade / Operations Management / Information Technology / Hotel Management / and related subjects.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies – UG in any stream – PG in Sports Management

After Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies and then study for an undergraduate degree in any Discipline followed by a master’s degree in Sports Management

After Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies and then while competing for your regular studies, you start playing a sports game professionally. Once you retire from your sports, you join the media as a sports analyst.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

Undergraduate studies after school

1. To become a Sports Manager, you can take multiple pathways. You can study Business Management Business Administration in under graduation as B.B.A. or B.B.M.

2. You can also study Engineering by taking a course in B.E. or B.Tech.

3. Alternatively, you can study Sports Management.

4. You can also study Science, Commerce and Arts with any subjects in under graduation.

Post Graduate studies

1. After graduation, you can study Business Administration (M.B.A.) in Sabermetrics / Sports & Leisure Management / Sports Administration and Management / Sports Analytics

2. Alternatively, you can also study 1 year or 2 year Post Graduate Programs Post Graduate Diploma in Sabermetrics / Sports & Leisure Management / Sports Administration and Management / Sports Analytics.

2. International Sports team like Indian Cricket Team, Indian Hockey Team, etc.

3. IPL cricket teams and teams of various sports which participate in sports leagues.

4. Sports Institutes like SAAI, Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, etc.

5. Sports facilities, grounds, academies like Feroz Shah Kotla, Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium, etc.

6. Sports media like TV channels (Star Sports, ESPN, etc.) or online media (Sportskeeda, Cricinfo, Cricbuzz, etc.) or print media and sports magazines.

Work Environment

As a Sports Manager, you will work in an intense working environment. If you are working as a facility manager, you will have the pressure of making sales as well as deadlines to keep facility ready and prepared. If you are working as an analyst, you will have a non-regular work timing. Many times, you will analyse a match once it is over. Thus, this could be even sometimes post-midnight. Sports Manager working with teams and associations are likely to work on regular working hours. However, as a sports manager, you will be required to be travelling with your team and workload will be higher before the trip.

SPECIALISATION TRACKS IN THIS CAREER

Recreational Sport Managers

Recreational sports managers are the people who manage the recreation teams and their interests. As a recreational sports manager, you will take care of schedule, payments, travel plans, lodging, food, sponsors of your team.

Sports Marketing Manager

Sports Marketing Managers work with a sports team and take care of their PR side. They also work to bring sponsors to the team, get kit and other equipment for free along with sponsorship.

Sport Event Manager

Sports event manager plans, organizes and control sports events. Most of the school level, college level, state level, national level and international level sports events require playing ground, permission from authorities, sponsorships, crowd management, facilities and operational expertise that only sports event manager brings.

Sports Facility Manager

Facility managers manage the sports facilities, grounds, recreational centres and related properties. As a facility manager, you will be responsible for managing the property, bringing revenue by subletting it to various sports events, maintain the property, collecting money, etc.

Sports Analyst

Sports Analyst is the specialist who generally analyses the sports game and its outcome. As a sports analyst, you analyse the performance of individuals and predicts future performance. Similar you predict results of matches.

Sports Agent

Sports agents represent sportspersons to clubs and teams. They negotiate the contracts with the clubs or teams on behalf of the sportspersons. They manage all the business and financial matters of sportspersons. They represent the sportspersons to various organizations such as advertisers who want the sportspersons to endorse their products, media companies who want to publish information on the sportspersons or want to interview them, lawyers who may represent matters of the sportspersons to a court of law, etc.

Sabermetrics Experts (Sabermetricians)

Sabermetricians are the experts who analyse the baseball statistics to measure in-game activities. As a sabermetrician, you will collect and summarise baseball game data and in game activities to answer to specific answers related to baseball.

CAREER GROWTH

1. As a Sports Manager, you will start your career as an assistant manager, then a sports manager and then senior sports manager. Your career will grow from managing a state level team and then managing a national team.

2. In facility management, you will join as a facility manager and then an administration manager.

3. In the analyst side, you will join as an intern, then you will become a sports writer and then sports analyst and then sports director.

Salary Offered  

1. At the entry level, if you join as an assistant manager of a sports team, you would be earning anything between Rs. 20,000 to 3,00,000 per month.

2. The higher payment will be if you are managing an international sports team. If you are a facility manager, then you will be earning anything between Rs. 15,000 to 50,000 per month. A sports analyst earns anything between Rs 25,000 to 5,00,000 per month. The higher amount is for a retired sportsperson working as an analyst.

3. At the junior level with a work experience of 2-6 years, you would be earning anything between Rs. 30,000 to 7,00,000 per month. The higher payment will be if you are managing an international sports team.

4. At the middle level with an experience of 6-12 years, you would be earning anything between Rs. 50,000 to 10,00,000 per month.

5. At the senior level of over 12 years of work experience, you would be earning anything between Rs. 1,00,000 to 20,00,000 per month.

MONTHLY EARNINGS IN INDIAN RUPEES

1. Entry level: 0 - 2 years of work experience  

2. Junior Level: From 1 to 12 years of work experience

3. Mid Level: From 5 to 20+ years of work experience

4. Senior Level: From 10 to 25+ years of work experience (there could be exceptions in some high-end technical, financial, engineering, creative, management, sports, and other careers; also in the near future, people will reach these levels much faster in many careers and in some careers, these levels will have no meaning as those careers will be completely tech skill driven such as even now, there is almost no level in a Cyber Security Expert’s job)

As a sports Manager, you will be having different roles and responsivities, based on them some of your work activities will be:

Organising, planning and prioritising tasks: Planning and organizing tasks in order to achieve work goals; prioritising tasks to achieve goals and making the best use of the time available.

Decision making & problem solving: Analysis of data and information; evaluation of alternative decisions and results of decisions; taking the right decisions and solving problems.

Communicating with customers: Communicating with potential and existing customers of your organisation in writing, verbally or otherwise.

Communicating with co-workers: Communicating with people in writing, verbally or otherwise inside your workplace and various other people who have professional relationships with your place of work including vendors, government officials, etc. or with people at large.

Using computers for work: Using computers for day-to-day office work; using computer software for various applications in day-to-day professional work; entering data and process information; for writing.

Future Prospects 

Indian Sports Industry has seen growth in the last 10 years thanks to the rise of league culture. Be its IPL for cricket, Indian Super League for football or Pro Kabaddi League for Kabaddi, each one of them has grown, increased fan base and provided opportunities to many more apart from the sportsperson. In 2016, IPL had 360+ million unique viewers. Similarly, ISL and Pro Kabaddi League had over 200+ millions of unique viewers. These influxes of viewers represent the success of such leagues which means more and more professional people getting job opportunities like sports managers for teams, an analyst for post-match reviews, etc.

Apart from the league, with khelo India, focus on Olympic Sports have also intensified. With more individual players coming under the wings of Khelo India, more future stars are being given a platform. These sportspersons again provide an opportunity for sports managers.
