About Career 

As a Poultry Worker, you will work in poultry farms and will be involved in the breeding and rearing of poultry animals such as chicken, duck, turkey, emu, goose, etc. to produce meat and eggs. Your primary work will involve ensuring appropriate feeding and taking care of animal health.

Your job will involve taking care of the feeding of the animals, clearing their litter, and keeping their quarters clean and sanitized. You will ensure that animal diseases are prevented, they are provided medication to control diseases and they are healthy. You will examine their growth and weight gain. 


Key Roles and Responsibilities

As a Poultry Worker, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities: -

1. Handling and management of the breeding stocks, or small birds and animals that are nurtured and grown in a poultry farm.

2. Rearingand ensure appropriate health care of the poultry animals.

3. Feeding of the poultry animals to ensure proper nutrition and growth.

4. Mixing additives, feed, and medicines in definite prescribed amounts.

5. Cleaning the poultry animals’ living quarters and sanitizing them with the help of disinfectants and other chemicals.

6. Examining and inspecting the animals to identify diseases and to ensure proper growth and weight gain.

7. Inspecting the flock for diseases and removing dead/ill/weak birds.

8. Proper collection of eggs and recording the number of eggs that each poultry animal lays.

9. Maintaining as well as repairing machinery, equipment, layers, pens, buildings, fences, and yards.

Who is Eligible

Career Entry Pathway 

Work experience in a poultry farming unit – obtain a National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 3 certificate of ‘Poultry Farming’.

You will have to first work in a poultry farming unit to gain the necessary skills and knowledge. Thereafter, you can obtain a National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 3 certificate of ‘Poultry Farming’. The total number of training hours is 80. You must be within 18 to 45 years of age to get the certificate.

After completing Class 5 in school, you will have to first work in a poultry farming unit for 1 year. Then you can obtain a National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 4 certificate of ‘Small Poultry Farmer’. The total number of training hours is 240. You can then easily apply for jobs as small poultry farmers at various poultry farm units or even set up your farm.

After Class 12, you can obtain a National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 5 certificate of ‘Hatchery In charge – Poultry’. However, before training, some experience in poultry farming is better. The total number of training hours is 175. You are then eligible for jobs as ‘hatchery in charge’ in various government or individual poultry units.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

1. You may not need any formal education to get a job in a poultry farm. However, it is better to complete at least Class 5 in school before trying to get a job.

2. You may also obtain NSQF Level 3/4/5 certificates as above from the National Academy of RUDSETI, Agricultural Skill Council of India (ASCI), or Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs).

3. You may also apply for training courses in 'Animal Husbandry an ITI or a similar institute.

Competencies Required

1. You should have an interest in Realistic Occupations. Realistic occupations involve more practical and hands-on activities than paperwork or office work. Realistic occupations often involve physical activities for getting things done using various tools and equipment. 

2. You should have good hand-eye coordination.

3. You should have knowledge of Mathematics – basic arithmetic and related mathematical disciplines and their applications.

4. Factual knowledge of poultry and related matters such as health and hygiene of birds, disease prevention and vaccination of birds, and market prices of poultry produce, etc.

5. You should have manual dexterity – The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.

6. You should have Physical Stamina - The ability to exert yourself physically over long periods without getting winded or out of breath.

7. You should have the required skills for handling birds and you should be able to operate farm machinery.

8. You should have Skills for Communication in Vernacular Languages - Skills in communicating effectively in writing as well as verbally with others in a local or indigenous language such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Bengali, Assamese, etc.

9. You always or mostly prefer to stick within a routine or carry out routine and repetitive activities. 

Career - Job Opportunities & Profiles 

You will find work at different individually owned poultry farms or farms contracted by various corporate organizations, which are involved in breeding, raising, sales, and export of livestock production.


Career Growth

You can grow within the poultry business through roles such as Poultry Farm Supervisor, Assistant Farm Manager, Unit Manager, etc. You can also set up your poultry farm after gaining adequate experience.

Salary Offered  

You can earn anywhere between Rs. 5,000- 10,000 monthly at the beginning of your career. However, this increases over time and varies with the quality of produce and location.

2. Inspecting materials such as animal feeds, medicines, etc. as well as inspecting equipment, structures, and materials used in farms.

3. Cleaning and sanitizing of animal quarters by hand and by using various equipment and materials.

4. Inspecting and monitoring physical conditions and health of animals.

5. Recording, documenting, and reporting information on animals and other aspects of a farm.

6. Communicating with farm workers, supervisors, and managers. 

7. Moving/handling objects – using arms and hands in installing, handling, moving, positioning materials, etc.

8. Package/label livestock products for processing/shipment.

9. Developing specific plans and goals to accomplish tasks/targets.

Future Prospects 

1. The poultry sector has very bright prospects. Today, India is the 3rd largest producer of eggs and 5th largest producer of poultry meat in the world. The poultry sector is expected to grow at least 5% per year. The increasing number of poultry farm entrepreneurs is leading to an increase in jobs.

2. After obtaining proper training and certification, you will also be eligible to set up and run your farm unit as well as employ more workers at your farm in the future. Today, more than 90% of poultry produce comes from poultry farmers running their farms in rural India.
