About Career 

As a Solar Panel Installation Technician, you have to ensure the successful installation of solar panels for the effective functioning of a solar power generation system post-installation. You will be responsible for checking the installation site, understanding the layout requirement as per the provided design, assessing the precautionary measures that need to be taken at the time of installation of the solar panel and then fix and install the solar panels.

As a Solar Panel Installation Technician, you will be involved in the designing process of the system setup after understanding the need of the customer. You will have to analyse the right direction towards which the solar panel should face.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

As a Solar Panel Installation Technician, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities:

1. You will need to understand the work requirement of individual customers and areas of operation.

2. You will be responsible for checking and assessing the site condition before the installation.

3. You will need to understand the preferences of the customer for analyzing the location and mounting of the solar panel.

4. You will need to collect the material required for the installation of a solar panel.

5. You will need to ensure the quality of the modules or parts of the panel, matches the voltage requirement.

6. You will need to ensure that high-quality materials such as modules, parts, panels, PV Cells, etc. are used.

7. You will need to make sure that the modules are stored in such a way that they are not damaged by falling-of or by any other natural/external factor.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - ITI Training in Electrical or Mechanical field

After class 10, you may apply for an ITI Training in Electrical or Mechanical field. Then you may obtain a minimum of 6 months of preferred experience in equipment installation (but it’s not mandatory).

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies –Diploma (Polytechnic) in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering

​​​​​​​After class 10, you may apply fora Diploma (Polytechnic) in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. After a Polytechnic Diploma, you may obtain a minimum of 6 months of preferred experience in equipment installation (but it’s not mandatory).

Required Qualification & Competencies 

After completing class 10, then you may apply for:

1. An ITI,  Training (2-year duration) , in Electrical or Mechanical field,  or

2. A 3-year Diploma (Polytechnic) in Electrical or Mechanical field.

Work Environment

As a Solar Panel Installation Technician, you will be working for around 35 to 40 hours a week. However, sometimes you might have to work for longer hours to finish the work. You will be performing your duty from outdoor and frequently exposed to high places. You might expose to , hazardous conditions , situations , and equipment , that may, produce minor, cuts or scrapes. You will be working in very bright or very dim lighting conditions.


Career Growth

From entry-level job positions, you may grow into a team leader role managing the work of a few technicians. In medium and large scale companies, you may have a position as Service Head, Senior Technician, Junior / Senior Supervisor after 8-12 or more years of experience.

1. Salaries vary according to job profiles and the kind of facilities you get to work at.

2. In the entry-level jobs: You may get about Rs. 6,000 – Rs. 11,000 or more per month.

3. Salaries increase with your work experience and as you get promoted.

4. After having 6-12 years of experience, you may get about Rs. 10,000 – Rs. 20,000 or more per month.

5. In the senior-level jobs, with 12-20 years of work experience, you may expect to get about Rs. 15,000– Rs. 30,000 or more per month.

Future Prospects 

The future seems to show very high growth. The generation of solar power has tremendously increased in the last few years. Because of the government’s favourable initiatives and innovative manufacturing technologies, the total installed renewable energy capacity in India touched 114.43GW (around 33 percent of the total energy capacity of the country).

According to the Climate scope report, India ranked second among the emerging economies to lead to the transition to clean energy. It is also assumed that India will also raise the solar power generation capacity addition target by five times to 100 gig watts (GW). Under the Union Budget , the Government of India has allocated Rs 5 crore (US$ 0.73 million) to increase the capacity of the Green Energy Corridor Project along with Rs 920 crore (US$ 130 million) for wind and Rs 3,005 crore (US$ 440 million) for solar power projects. This continued expansion and adoption of solar energy/solar power projects are expected to create new jobs in various related sectors including Solar Panel Installation Technician.
