About Career 

A Public Relations Manager uses a wide range of media and communication options to build and maintain the corporate image of a company, an individual, or a Government. As a Public relations manager, you will be handling a mid-level management role, engaging in building communication programs, interacting with people inside and outside the company, which includes employees, media and customers, and helping to promote the image of your company or your client company (if you are working for a public relations consulting firm). You will be pitching stories to the media, fielding media questions and organizing press conferences. You may also have to learn about new communication tactics and strengthen the internal communication present within the company or your client company.


Key Roles And Responsibilities:

Every Public relations manager has to learn these basic tasks which include:

1. Collaborating with internal communications and content development teams and trying to integrate external storylines with internal communications, blog and social media channels.

2. Developing and using systems that will help in the tracking and organizing of media lists, quarterly goals, and successes.

3. Maximizing opportunities to improve publicity within the local media channels through careful research of media trends and media requirements.

4. Develop media coverage reports quarterly or annually.

5. Managing the creation of infographics and other kinds of media content especially in partnership with the Creative team.

6. Collaborating with cross-functional partners in Marketing, Product Development, etc. so as to understand the brand initiatives.

7. Engaging in the recruitment processes of other cross-functional teams so as to support key brand initiatives.

8. Working with lawyers and clients so that the legal accuracy of their speech or press releases could be maintained or corrected.

Once you’ve completed Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies, you can pursue Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies. You can then pursue Bachelor in any Discipline. Then, you can move on to postgraduate degrees like Master of Arts in Advertising and Public Relations where you gain an understanding of the basic concepts in relation to decision making in the fields of public relationship and advertisements.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

1. After graduation, if you want a specialized knowledge of Public Relations, you need to have a Master of Arts in Advertising and Public Relations or a Master of Business Administration in Advertising Management and Public Relations or Marketing. This will make you eligible for some of the entry-level jobs in Public Relations Management.

2. You can also opt for Post Graduate Diploma in Public Relations which will teach different skills and make you eligible for the jobs in this field.

Work Environment

Public relations manager generally have to work in offices during regular business hours, which is 8 hours per day, and around off of 40 hours per week. However, as a PR manager, you may have to travel, give speeches and may have to interact with a large pool of crowd or audience. Statistics also show that about 1 in 3 PR managers work more than 40 hours per week.

Lobbyists are PR manager who try to get the government on its side. As a public relations manager dealing with public affairs, you have to engage with the government of the country like ministers and persuade them to frame certain legislations or to get certain tax benefits that can help your company.


3. Image Manager

PR managers are concerned with improving and managing the media image of a organization, business or an individual. As a PR manager, you have to know the methods to manage the image of a business and enhance your communication skills as you will engage with stakeholders, the audience, the general public, etc.


4. Reputation Management Professionals

Reputation management professionals maintain, build, and recover the image of a business or an organization online. As a reputation management professional, you have to use different strategies like SEO, blog posts, and encouraging positive reviews to improve the image of an organization.


Career Growth

1. At the beginning of your career, you will start as a Public Relations Executive / Executive Trainee / Management Trainee. After 2-3 years of experience, you can become an Assistant Manager. After gathering about 5-6 years of experience, you can become a Public Relations Manager. Thereafter, you can move into other progressive roles like an Assistant VP, Associate VP, VP, etc. after gathering 6-8 years of experience. In some agencies, you can also move up from Associate to Associate Consultant, and further to Consultant. You can even become a Partner and eventually a Managing Partner.

2. As you acquire more experience, you can grow into other senior roles like PR specialist or a PR consultant.

Salary Offered  

Public relations are an integral part of every company as the disciple protects the reputation of the company. As an entry-level public relations officer, you are expected to get Rs. 12,000-20,000 per month. If you gain a bit of experience, then you can go up to the junior level and get about Rs. 15,000-40,000 per month. Mid-range salary gets a huge boost as you can get about Rs. 40,000-200,000 or more per month. Senior level PR manager can get Rs. 1,10,000 - 300,000 per month or even more.

3. Developing and maintaining inter-personal relationships: Developing professional relationships with co-workers and others outside organizations and maintaining good relationships.

4. Communicating with co-workers and others: Communicating with people in writing, verbally or otherwise inside your workplace and various other people who have professional relationships with your place of work including vendors, government officials, etc. or with people at large.

5. Getting Information and learning: Observing, hearing, reading, using computers, or otherwise obtaining information and learning from it.

Future Prospects 

According to the Public Relations Consultants Association of India,  the public relations industry is expected to touch about Rs. 2,100 crores. This is a major growth that is going to take place due to a few driving factors like the growth of social media and more content-based campaigns, which is going to contribute to about  25% to the revenue of PR firms. As a result, there will be a high demand in the PR industry for a PR manager.
