About Career 

As a Spa Therapist, you will apply various types of non-medical procedures to your customers for holistic healthcare and wellness. These procedures are often called spa treatments or spa therapies and these are generally done to make people get rid of some types of body aches and for rejuvenation of skins, scalp, overall relaxation, etc.

Spa treatments and therapies help people relax and get rid of fatigue or tiredness. Spa treatments and therapies help in holistic healthcare and wellness.

As a Spa Therapist, depending upon your expertise and requirements of your customers, you will apply one or more of several types of spa treatments such as Ayurvedic oil massage, aromatherapy, mud bath, Thai massage, hot stone massage, Hawaiian massage, acupressure, thermal spa, body wraps, body scrubs, etc.   

Key Roles and Responsibilities

As a Spa Therapist, you will be engaged with any or many of the following roles and responsibilities:-

1. You will prepare and maintain work area for a spa treatment.

2. Greet the customers and inquire about their service requirements. You will advise them about the different spa treatments available and make them choose the required treatments.

3. Before a therapy, you will explain to your customers about the therapy – what process and materials are used, what could be the benefits, etc.

4. Perform spa therapies on customers by adopting the right materials, equipment, and methods.

5. In senior-level work roles, you will be inducting and training junior or assistant therapists.

6. In senior-level work roles, you will be leading and managing a team of therapist and carry out various administrative works.

7. You will ensure health and safety at your workplace.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Obtain an NSQF Level 3 qualification as an Assistant Spa Therapist

After class 10, do a training program to obtain an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 3 as an Assistant Spa Therapist. With this, you can get a job in a spa or a similar establishment as an Assistant Spa Therapist or in a similar position.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Obtain an NSQF Level 3 qualification as an Assistant Spa Therapist – Work for 6-12 months as an Assistant Spa Therapist / in a similar position in a Spa – Obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification as a Spa Therapist

After class 10, do a training program to obtain an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 3 as an Assistant Spa Therapist. With this, you can get a job in a spa or a similar establishment as an Assistant Spa Therapist or in a similar position. After having 6-12 months work experience, you can obtain an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 4 qualification as a Spa Therapist.

After class 10, do a training program to obtain an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 3 as an Assistant Spa Therapist. With this, you can get a job in a spa or a similar establishment as an Assistant Spa Therapist or in a similar position. After having 6-12 months work experience, you can obtain an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 4 qualification as a Spa Therapist. Thereafter, after having 2 years of work experience as a Spa Therapist, you can obtain an NSQF Level 5 qualification as a Senior Spa Therapist.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Do a Certificate or Diploma course in Spa Therapy / Similar field – Work for 2 years in a spa as a Spa Therapist - NSQF Level 5 Qualification for Senior Spa Therapist

After class 10, do a Certificate or Diploma course in Spa Therapy or in a similar field which should train you in different spa techniques such as body massage, scrubs, and wraps. Then, find a job in a spa as a Spa Therapist or in a similar position, work for 2 years and then qualify for NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 5 as a Senior Spa Therapist. For this qualification, you need to attain a minimum 18 years of age.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Do a Certificate or Diploma in Spa Therapy or in a similar field

After class 10, you can do a Certificate or Diploma course in Spa Therapy or in a similar field from a vocational training institute.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

After Class 10, you can study for a Certificate or Diploma in Spa Therapy or in a similar field.

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

1. You should have interests for Social Occupations. Social occupations involve helping or assisting others; these involve working with and communicating with people to provide various services.

2. You should have interests for Realistic Occupations. Realistic occupations involve more practical and hands-on activities than paperwork or office work.

3. Knowledge of how to provide customer services. This includes understanding customer needs, helping customers to use products and services, answering customer queries, handling customer complaints and grievances, and evaluating customer satisfaction.

4. Knowledge of how to provide various assistance and services to others. This includes looking after the needs of individuals, understanding what they need and provide all assistance at home or elsewhere.

5. Finger Dexterity - The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.

6. Manual Dexterity - The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.

7. Active Listening – Skills in giving full attention to what other people are saying, understanding the points being made by others, asking questions, etc.

8. Skills in communicating effectively with others in a local or indigenous language such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Bengali, Assamese, etc.

9. Service Orientation: Skills in or a keen interest to help and assist people.

10. You are always or mostly disciplined in your action and behaviour.

11. You are always or mostly helpful to others.

12. You are always calm or generally remain calm in most situations.

13. You can always act independently or could do so in most situations.

14. You are always or mostly caring, supportive, sympathetic and kind to others.

After obtaining NSQF Level 3 qualification, you can get a job as an Assistant Spa Therapist.

You may get a job in a spa or a salon that offers spa services. Various 5-Star and 4-star hotels, as well as resorts across the world, have spas. You can get a job in such facilities as well.

CAREER GROWTH

You may get many opportunities to grow in this career. With experience and obtaining requisite qualifications, you may get promoted as a Spa Therapist and then as a Senior Spa Therapist, Spa Expert, Spa Manager, etc. You may also set up your own spa or offer spa services at home independently.

Salary Offered  

1. As an apprentice or trainee, you will be earning about Rs. 3,000-5,000 a month.

2. After 1-3 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 8,000-10,000 a month.

3. After 5-10 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 12,000-25,000 or more a month. Besides, many spas allow you to accept tips from customers.

4. You can earn much more if you set up your own salon or become an independent spa therapist. Many celebrity and rich customers ask for services at home. You can earn a lot. 

MONTHLY EARNINGS IN INDIAN RUPEES


1. Entry level: 0 - 2 years of work experience  

2. Junior Level: From 1 to 12 years of work experience

3. Mid Level: From 5 to 20+ years of work experience

4. Senior Level: From 10 to 25+ years of work experience (there could be exceptions in some high-end technical, financial, engineering, creative, management, sports, and other careers; also in the near future, people will reach these levels much faster in many careers and in some careers, these levels will have no meaning as those careers will be completely tech skill driven such as even now, there is almost no level in a Cyber Security Expert’s job)

Working directly with people – Working directly with people to offer them products and services, providing assistance, etc.

Performing physical activities – Performing physical activities that require the use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as massaging, stooping, and handling of materials.

Assisting and caring for people - Assisting people in availing of services; taking care of people in different situations; offering help and services to others.

Communicating with customers - Communicating with potential and existing customers of your organisation in writing, verbally or otherwise.

Establishing and maintaining good relations – you will need to establish good working relationships with your customers, co-workers, and others.

Updating professional knowledge – you should learn continuously and update professional knowledge.

Leading and managing co-workers – you will help co-workers to understand their job roles, carry out their jobs roles appropriately and supervise their work activities.

Handling administrative activities – Handling various administrative tasks and managing day-to-day operations.

Future Prospects 

The growth prospect of India’s Spa Industry is good. The Spa industry is a part of the Wellness Industry. As per a recent report published by FICCI in association with EY consultancy, the wellness industry is expected to grow at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 12% for the next 5 years. This will result in more job opportunities for trained Spa Therapists.
