About Career 

1. As a Mobile Phone Repairer, you will be responsible for fitting, testing, analysing and repairing different kinds of mobile phones and smartphones. Mobile Repair Technicians work out of the store/service centre itself. If they work for large retailers, they have to work nearly 9-10 hours daily or they may also work in shifts. If they are self-employed, they may set their own work timings.

2. You need to dismantle parts of the phones, identify the defects or defective parts, repair it or replace the defective parts and then test it to check whether the phones are working properly or not. You may also have to enter specific information about repair requests into your office’s computer systems from time to time (data entry).

3. Once the repair work is completed, you may have to fill up service delivery forms with the details of what the problem/s was and what repair work was done. You may need to get the customers to sign this form as well and then submit the forms to your office.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

As a Mobile Repairer, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities: -

1. You will be inspecting mobile phones, smartphones and other related devices for defects/deficiencies.

2. You will be opening, disassembling, repairing, replacing dysfunctional unit parts (touchscreen, charging jacks, earphone jacks, SIM tray holder, microphone, etc.) with new ones and reassembling the parts to final form.

3. You will be discussing with customers either via telephone or in person to gather information about various used mobile products, receiving orders, and documenting the details about specific requests of customers.

4. You will be testing repaired mobile units and informing clients about when they could retrieve their units.

5. You will be providing a high level of technical customer service support at mobile repair service/support centre.

6. You will be addressing customer's complaints; understanding the root cause of the product/service problem, and providing clarification; determining the best way to resolve the problem ensuring speedy delivery of mobile repair services

7. You will be ensuring that all mobile repair requests are handled in a timely manner and your services match the quality standards of the product brand.

8. You will be ensuring that the mobile repair centre is stocked with replacement kits and spare parts for repairing mobiles.

9. You will be monitoring and keeping track of inventory and customers’ mobile devices.

10. You will be building and maintaining strong rapport and trust with customers.

    Career Entry Pathway 

    Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - NSQF Level 3 Certificate for ‘Smartphone Technician Cum App Tester’ or similar

    After Class 10, you can go for National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) Level 3 Training and Certificate programs for ‘Smartphone Technician Cum App Tester’, ‘Repair and Maintenance of Personal Electronic Devices’ or similar courses. The total number of training hours range between 520 and 1040. You must be at least 14 years of age to go for these courses.

    Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – work for 1 year - NSQF Level 4 Certificate for ‘Smartphone Repair Technician’ or similar

    After Class 10, you need to work for at least a year in any electronics repair workshop or facility which deals with repairing of various electronics (especially mobile phones) and related hardware. Then you can go for National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) Level 4 Training and Certificate programs for ‘Smartphone Repair Technician’ or similar courses. The total number of training hours range is 200.

    Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – training for ‘Mobile Repairing’ at an ITI or similar institute

    After Class 10, you can go for training at any Industrial Training Institute (ITI), National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Regional Vocational Training Institute (RVTI), National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Industrial Training Center (ITC) or other vocational institutes for the role of ‘Mobile Repairing’, ‘Electronics Hardware Maintenance’, ‘Mobile Cell Phone Mechanic’ or similar trades. You will sit for All India Trade Test (AITT) to get a National Trade Certificate (NTC) after this course. This exam is held twice a year in the months of February and July.

    Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering - NSQF Level 4 Certificate for ‘Smartphone Repair Technician’ or similar

    After Class 10, you can go for a Diploma course in ‘Electronics and Communication Engineering’, ‘Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering’, ‘Electronics (Microprocessor)’, ‘Digital Electronics’ or similar disciplines from a Polytechnic college or elsewhere. Diploma courses are usually for 3 years. Then to specialize in mobile phone repairing, you can go for National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) Level 4 Training and Certificate programs for ‘Smartphone Repair Technician’ or similar courses. The total number of training hours range is 200.

    Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – CTS Training in ‘Electronics Mechanic’ - NSQF Level 4 Certificate for ‘Smartphone Repair Technician’ or similar

    After Class 10, you can go for the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) course for ‘Electronics Mechanic’ or similar courses. This is a 2-year course with 4 semesters of 6 months each. Then to specialize in mobile phone repairing, you can go for National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) Level 4 Training and Certificate programs for ‘Smartphone Repair Technician’ or similar courses. The total number of training hours range is 200.

    Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - NAC for ‘Electronics Mechanic’ - 2nd year of Diploma in Electronics Engineering - NSQF Level 4 Certificate for ‘Smartphone Repair Technician’ or similar

    After Class 10, obtain a National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) through Apprenticeship training for ‘Electronics Mechanic’. Then you can get direct admission to 2nd yr of Diploma in ‘Electronics and Communication Engineering’, ‘Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering’, ‘Electronics (Microprocessor)’, ‘Digital Electronics’ or related trades through lateral entry route. Then to specialize in mobile phone repairing, you can go for National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) Level 4 Training and Certificate programs for ‘Smartphone Repair Technician’ or similar courses. The total number of training hours range is 200.

    1. You should have interests for Realistic Occupations. Realistic occupations involve more practical and hands-on activities than paperwork or office work. Realistic occupations often involve physical activities for getting things done using various tools and equipment.

These occupations involve working more with data, systems, and procedures and less with ideas or creativity.

    4. You should have knowledge of Mathematics - Knowledge of arithmetic, geometry and other mathematical disciplines and their applications.

    5. You should have Machine Repair and Maintenance Skills - performing repair and maintenance of different machines, equipment, and devices.

    6. You should have Problem Solving Skills - analysis and understanding of problems, evaluating various options to solve the problems and using the best option to solve the problems.

    7. You should have Arm-Hand Steadiness - The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.

    Career Growth

    You can certainly progress to be a Senior Technician or Services Specialist in any organization with proper training and certification, after some initial experience as Smartphone Repair Technician or Service Technician.

    However, if you complete your higher studies for some years after class 12, you may scale up to Senior Foreman, Services Supervisor, Customer Inspection In-charge, Chief Quality Officer, Facilities Management Specialist, Managed Services Lead,  Zonal& Regional Service Head etc.

    Salary Offered  

    1. Salaries vary according to job profiles and the kind of facilities you get to work at.

    2. At the beginning of your career, you can expect a salary ranging between Rs. 7,000 - 15,000 or more a month.

    3. After around 5-7 years, you can expect a monthly salary of ranging anywhere between Rs. 10,000 - 25,000 or more a month.

    4. After 10-12 years, you can earn around Rs. 15,000 - 35,000 or more a month.

    5. After an experience of 12+ years, you can expect to make around Rs. 20,000 - 45,000 or more a month.

As the mobile market continues to expand in India, the demand for skilled Mobile Repair Technicians will naturally rise simultaneously.
