About Career 

1. As an Electrical Mechanic, you will operate, test, repair and maintain electromechanical equipment(mechanical devices that is operated electrically such as industrial pumps for controlling flow of various liquids, borewell water pumps, electrically operated car windows, agricultural equipment, etc.), complicated electrical grids (interconnected networks for delivering electricity), discover the defects and get them resolved. You will be assisting in the maintenance and repairing of electrical equipment so that they work properly.

2. You will be responsible for the systematic installations of electrical devices. You will design, create, test, maintain and repair electrical systems. You need to understand complex electrical grid structures.


Key Roles and Responsibilities:

As an Electrical Mechanic, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities: -

1. Manually testing and performing visual inspection of electrical systems.

2. Replacing defective parts of electrical equipment and adjusting mechanical parts using hand tools.

3. Ensuring availability of spare parts, tools, supplies and supporting equipment for repair work.

4. Installing new equipment as additions to existing electrical systems.

5. Studying and interpreting manuals, blueprints, diagrams and other specifics for determining installation requirements.

6. Operating industrial equipment and understanding their uses and functions to find defects.

7. Inspecting/analysing/fixing connections between more than one electrical devices/industrial units.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 8 in school– work - NSQF Level 2 Certificate for ‘Electrical Winder

After completing Class 8 in school, you need to work for some time as a helper in any small business or workshop dealing with electrical work till you are at least 14 years old to be eligible for the following training and certificate. Then you can go for National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 2 Training and Certificate for ‘Electrical Winder’. The total number of training hours is 700.

Class 8 in school – get ITI training - obtain National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 3 Certificate for ‘Junior Mechanic (Electrical)’

After completing Class 8 in school, you need to get trained at an ITI or similar institute first as a Mechanic in any related field.The duration is usually 1-2 years. Then you can go for National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 3 Training and Certificate for ‘Junior Mechanic (Electrical)’. The total number of training hours is 120 only.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies- obtain National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 5 Certificate for ‘Mechanic (Electrical Power Drives)’

After Class 10,youcan obtain National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 5 Training and Certificate for ‘Mechanic (Electrical Power Drives)’. This course is divided into 4 blocks each of 3, 3, 9 and 9 months respectively (total 24 months or 2 years). You will get both basic and on-job-training (OJT) during these two years. With this certificate you can apply for jobs and join the industry easily or you may also start providing your own services and start your own trade.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – training for ‘Electrical’or related trades at an ITI or similar institute

After Class 10, you can go for training at any Industrial Training Institute (ITI), National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Regional Vocational Training Institute (RVTI), National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Industrial Training Center (ITC) or other vocational institutes for ‘Electrical Sector’, ‘Electrical / Production & Manufacturing’, ‘COE Electrical Advance’, ‘COE Electrical Basic’ or related trades. This is a 2 year training course with 4 semesters (6 months each). You will sit for All India Trade Test (AITT) to get National Trade Certificate (NTC) after this course. This exam is held twice a year in the months of February and July.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – training for ‘Electrical’ or related trades at an ITI or similar institute - obtain National Apprenticeship Certificate

After Class 10, you can go for training at any Industrial Training Institute (ITI), National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Regional Vocational Training Institute (RVTI), National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Industrial Training Center (ITC) or other vocational institutes for ‘Electrical Sector’, ‘Electrical / Production & Manufacturing’, ‘COE Electrical Advance’, ‘COE Electrical Basic’ or related trades. This is a 2 year training course with 4 semesters (6 months each). You will sit for All India Trade Test (AITT) to get National Trade Certificate (NTC) after this course. This exam is held twice a year in the months of February and July. Then you can obtain National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) for ‘Draughtsman (Mechanical)’ after completing Apprenticeship training. You can join Apprenticeship program after passing Class 10 also. Apprenticeship training is of the following durations. After you complete: Class 10 with any subjects, Science and Mathematics (as Fresher apprentice): 2 years of Basic training (6 months) and Practical training (18 months), ITI course (as Vocational Apprentice): Only Practical training (12 months). You can get NAC in the following categories:, Electrical Winder (24 months),  Mechanic (Agricultural Machinery) (24 months), Mechanical (Electrical Power Drives)(24 months), Mechanic (Electrical Maintenance of Process Plants)(24 months), Mechanic (Auto Electrical)(24 months)

Obtain National Apprenticeship Certificate (after Class 10 or ITI training) – admission to 2nd year of Diploma in ‘Electrical’ or related trades though lateral entry route

After obtaining National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) in any 1 of the following categories or related trades through Apprenticeship training, you can get direct admission to 2nd yr of Diploma in ‘Electrical’ or similar disciplines though lateral entry route:  Electrical Winder (24 months), Mechanic (Agricultural Machinery) (24 months), Mechanical (Electrical Power Drives)(24 months), Mechanic (Electrical Maintenance of Process Plants)(24 months), Mechanic (Auto Electrical)(24 months).

Required Qualification & Competencies 

After Class 10, you can do the following:

1. National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) Certificate and Training.

2. National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) after apprenticeship training.

3. Take vocational training at an ITI (or similar institute).

4. Diploma after getting NAC.

Specialisation Tracks In This Career


1. Electrical Mechanic (Agricultural Machinery)

Electrical Mechanics (Agricultural Machinery) deal with different farm instruments and equipments like power tillers, tractors, drillers, sprayers, fuel pumps, engines etc. They need to examine, replace or repair defective parts, install necessary components and adjust some parts so that they work properly.


2. Industrial Mechanic (Electrical)

They mainly perform wiring, cable connections and jointing (cable joints protect cables from dust, moisture etc), operate/maintain/repair transformers, motors, generator sets, storage batteries, plan/install/test ear thing designs etc. in an industrial environment at factories, petroleum refineries etc. They need to have thorough knowledge of legal regulations and safety guidelines and use these guidelines at work.


3. Electrical Mechanic (Mines)

Electrical Mechanics (Mines) mainly look after the necessary electrical and electromechanical work in mines and manage the electrical circuits, lights, motors, switches, installations, switchgears, switchboards, transformers, cap lamps, pumps, fuses, wiring etc in mines. They test and maintain the electrical machinery and equipment in the mines, test defective connections and locate faults. They always need to examine all electrical instruments for preventing dangerous accidents.


Career Growth

This is a very lucrative field with excellent high-paying job opportunities abroad also. You only need some training or certification after minimum education to enjoy these opportunities. You can certainly progress to be a Senior Mechanic or Supervisor or Services Specialist in any organization with proper training and certification, after some initial experience. However, if you can obtain proper certification and training for some years after class 10, you may scale up to Service and Maintenance Engineer/Assistant Manager (Electrical) in India or abroad.

Salary Offered  

1. Salaries vary according to job profiles and the kind of facilities you get to work at.

2. In the entry-level jobs: You may expect between Rs.8000 – 13,000 or more per month.

3. Salaries increase with your work experience and as you get promoted. In the mid-level jobs, with 4-5 years of work experience, you may expect between Rs.10,000 –22,000 or more per month.

4. After having 6-10 years of work experience, you may expect to earn between Rs. 20,000 – 28,000 per month or even more.

5. There is a lot of demand of trained Electrical Mechanics abroad, mostly in Middle Eastern and African countries. After having 2-5 years of experience, as an Electrical Mechanic, you can earn about Rs. 35,000 – 50,000 or more per month. In these jobs, after having, 8-12 years of experience, you can earn about Rs. 50,000 – 1,20,000 or even more per month.

5.  Fabricating, assembling, and constructing equipment, devices and products - Fabricating, assembling, constructing or otherwise manufacturing products, equipment, devices and tools; testing and calibrating products, equipment, devices, tools and systems.

6. Providing advice and consultation to others – Giving advice or consultation to others about various issues, conceptual matters, know-how, scientific matters, products or services for people/customers/workers to follow regarding repair, proper maintenance and use of electrical components.

Future Prospects 

Your future as an Electrical Mechanic looks bright. Electrical equipment market production is expected to reach 100 billion US Dollars mark. Engineering Research and Design revenues are forecasted to reach 42 billion US Dollars. The Electrical and Electronics sector of India is expected to grow more than 3 times its current size. The annual growth rate is expected at ed around 11%. India’s defence sector will also expand in the next 10 years and India’s experts will also rise . Work opportunities are expected to increase with the huge expansion of this industry.
