About Career
1. Copywriting is a critical function of Advertising. As a Copywriter, you will be working with copywriting agencies, advertising agencies, marketing agencies, software companies, public relations firms etc. or independently (self-employed / freelancer). You have to be able to find the right words to describe your company’s / clients brand story. You will have to innovate and write brand slogans in order to capture a sizeable hold over the market by increasing sales.
2. You will be generating taglines or catchphrases for your company / client. Some examples of such catchphrases are ‘The Taste of India’ for Amul, ‘The Complete Man’ for Raymond, ‘Taste the Thunder’ for Thums Up, ‘Rise’ for Mahindra etc. If simply put, you will be writing to express a company’s business concept or the utility of a product built, sold or marketed by the company in order to attract more customers.
3. As a Copywriter, you will mainly be writing advertising promotional materials. You will be responsible for the publicizing lines written on billboards, emails, Websites, catalogs, advertisements or retail products that are visible to the public eye for e.g. ‘Bleed Blue’ for Wills, ‘Have a break, have a KitKat’ for KitKat, ‘No one can eat just one’ for Lays PepsiCo.
4. You don’t necessarily have to be a writer to enter this field. You may have to write / re-write your copies several times to make various versions of it. You will also have to coordinate your work with art directors, designers, PR personnel, marketing personnel and other professionals including your own copywriting team. Creativity and analytical skills are essential when seeking a career in copywriting. You should also possess decent language skills primarily in a vernacular language or English.
5. As most companies today are expanding their outreach through digital or Internet media, you may need to know how to grow online search traffic (increase the chance of people discovering your writing first while searching online on a particular topic). This strategy is more commonly known as SEO (Search Engine Optimization) today. You may need to attend SEO courses in order to know more about this.
6. Copywriters come from almost any discipline, background, exposure level, past experience,and income groups. The best part is that your educational qualification may be of senior secondary level or Doctoral level, you can always become a Copywriter. Structured education and formal certification are not prerequisites for becoming a Copywriter.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:
As a Copywriter, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities: -
1. You will be receiving assignments regarding writing advertising copies, discussing with clients and/or colleagues about the product, required advertising themes, color codes and methods.
2. You will be composing advertising copies for use by publication, internet media or broadcast, for promoting the sale of products and services.
3. You will be developing advertising campaigns for a broad range of clientele, working with the creative directors and art directors of advertising agencies to determine the best way to present advertising information.
4. You will be presenting drafts, mock-ups, and ideas to clients and / or colleagues.
5. You will be conducting research to obtain authentic detail and factual information using various physical and digital sources for creating accurate, effective and complete advertising copies.
6. You will be consulting with sales, marketing and media representatives for obtaining information on item to be advertised and discussing style and length of advertising copy.
7. You will vary the language and tone of messages based on the product and advertising medium.
8. You will be collaborating with other writers for specific projects.
9. You will be meeting with clients, directors, investors, technicians (graphics, marketing and media personnel)etc. to discuss revisions or changes to written material.
10. You will be revising, editing or rewriting composed material to match personal standards and for meeting the needs of directors, clients, technicians (graphics, marketing and media personnel) or investors.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies - B. Voc course / Bachelor degree course in related disciplines
After completing Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies then Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies, you can enroll for a B. Voc (Bachelor of Vocation)or Bachelor degree course in ‘Advertising and Brand Management’, ‘Advertising and Marketing’, ‘Mass Communication’, ‘Public Relations’, ‘Media Studies’, Social Communication’, ‘Media & Entertainment’, ‘Advertising and Public Relations’, ‘Media & Communication’, ‘Interpersonal Communication’, ‘Digital and Interactive Media’, ‘Journalism and Media’ or related disciplines.
Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies – Bachelor degree in English or other languages
After completing Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies then Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies, you can go for a Bachelor degree in ‘English’, any other vernacular language, ‘Linguistics’ or related fields. It will be better if you can complete a Diploma / Certificate / Foundation / Superclass course after your graduation in ‘Creative Copywriting’, ‘Copywriting’ or similar disciplines.

Required Qualification & Competencies
There is no course that will prepare you specifically for this discipline as an industry-ready professional. As formal education is not necessary, Copywriters usually gather knowledge and skills from past experience. There are no set training standards in this field, and Copywriters are expected to learn while on the job. However, you can go for courses offered by Institute of Copywriting of India. Recruiters prefer candidates at least with a college level degree.
After Class 11-12, you can go for:

2. B. Voc/ Bachelor degree courses.
After your graduation, you can go for a Master level program in your respective field followed by an Advanced Diploma / Certificate / Foundation course in related disciplines.
