About Career 

1. As an Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician, you will be installing, servicing and repairing various types of air-conditioning machines such as window air-conditioners, split air-conditioners, etc.

2. Large industrial and commercial complexes such as drugs manufacturing factories and shopping malls require HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning) systems. You will be involved in the installation, inspection, repair, and maintenance of HVAC systems.

3. Many residential and commercial infrastructure require central air-conditioning or central heating system. For example, upscale residential apartments, hospitals, and hotels have central air-conditioning or heating systems. Central air-conditioning or central heating require HVAC systems. You will be involved in the installation, repair, and maintenance of such systems as well.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

As an Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities: -

1. Installation of Air-Conditioning machines such as window air-conditioners and split air-conditioners at homes, offices and other places.

2. Installation of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning) systems at large factories, commercial and other large scale infrastructure such as metro stations.

3. Inspection of air-conditioning machines and HVAC machines to check if any servicing or repair is required.

4. Performing servicing and repair work as required.

5. Maintenance of air-conditioning machines and HVAC systems in good working conditions.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 8 in school – obtain National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 3 Certificate for ‘Repair and Maintenance of Refrigerator’.

After completing Class 8 in school, you can obtain National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 3Training and Certificate for ‘Repair and Maintenance of Refrigerator’ from a vocational training institute. You need to be at least 14 years old to be eligible for this certificate. The total number of training hours is 500. This certificate is valid for 5 years.

After completing Class 8 in school, you will have to first work as a helper in small businesses or workshops related to electrical work, electronics, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning)or refrigeration for 2 years to gain some work experience. You may also complete class 10 in school and directly for the National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 4Training and Certificate for ‘Field Technician – Air-conditioner’ or ‘Field Technician – Refrigerator’ from a vocational training institute. The total number of training hours is 360.

After Class 10, you need to go for an ITI training course in ‘Mechanic Refrigeration and Air Conditioning’ or similar courses. This training is of 2 years with 4 semesters.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

After class 8, you can:

Take NSQF Training for courses like ‘Repair and Maintenance of Refrigerator’, ‘Field Technician – Air-conditioner’ or ‘Field Technician – Refrigerator’ or similar courses.


After class 10, you can:

Go for ITI training for ‘Mechanic Refrigeration and Air Conditioning’ or similar courses like HVAC Technologies, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic, Advanced Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Mechanic (Central Air conditioning Plant, Industrial cooling and Package Air conditioning), Mechanic (Domestic, Commercial Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Machines) etc.

8. Electronics Instrument Repair and Maintenance - Skills in performing repair and maintenance of different electronic machines, equipment, and devices.

9. Installation - Skills in fitting and installing equipment, machines, wiring, manufacturing plant, etc. as per specifications.

10. Troubleshooting - Skills in determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.

Specialisation Tracks In This Career

HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) Technician

HVAC Technicians are involved in installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC systems. HVAC Systems consists of the heating unit (a furnace or a boiler), ducts or pipes for the flow of air, motors or fan for circulating the cooler and heated air, compressor unit for cooling air, and other electrical components such as condenser coil, thermostats, switches, electronic control panels, etc. In most tropical countries like India, the heating unit may not be installed.


Career Growth

Growth opportunities are limited in this career in terms of growing into larger roles. From being a trainee or an apprentice, you can become a Technician and then a Senior Technician. You may get a supervisory role as well with 10+ years of experience.

Salary Offered  

1. In the beginning of your career as a trainee or apprentice, you will get about Rs. 7,000 – 13,000 or more per month.

2. With 2 or more years of experience, you may earn between Rs. 10,000 – 25,000 or more per month.

3. With 10+ years of experience, you may earn about Rs. 15,000 – 50,000 or more per month. The higher earnings are possible in jobs in middle  eastern countries.

Future Prospects 

The capital goods industry turnover is predicted to grow to more than 110 billion USD. The rapid increase in industrial production is creating attractive opportunities for such technicians in the organized sector but due to lack of skilled personnel the recruiters are either hiring from abroad or providing OJT (on-job-training) helplessly to unskilled people.
