About Career 

1. As a Fitness Instructor, you will be instructing or coaching groups or individuals in exercise activities. You will be involved in demonstrating techniques and form of different exercise formats, observing the participants, and explaining to them corrective measures necessary to improve their skills. You will be planning exercise routines and selecting different movements based on participants' capabilities and limitations to affect each set of muscles.

2. As a Fitness Instructor, you will also have to motivate your clients and grow confidence in them and help to build a positive environment to enhance their performances. You will have to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each of your clients and help them improve. You will have to understand the mentality of each of your clients and give them personalized fitness training or nutritional regime to enhance their abilities.

3. Gym/Fitness Instructors work inside a gymnasium around 8 to 9 hours a day. As a Fitness Instructor, you may also work in fitness studios or homes of private clients. Your work environment will generally be quiet and relaxed. If you offer personal training services, you may need to travel to clients premises.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

As a Fitness Instructor, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities: -

1. You will be evaluating clients’ needs, abilities, and physical conditions, and develop suitable training programs to meet any special requirements.

2. You will be planning exercise routines, choosing appropriate music, and selecting different movements based on participants' capabilities and limitations to affect each set of muscles.

3. You will be explaining, teaching and demonstrating different movements and use of gymnastic and training equipment.

4. You will be teaching proper breathing techniques to be followed during physical exertion.

5. You will be observing participants and informing them of the corrective measures required for skill improvement.

6. You will be explaining to your clients about appropriate gym clothing and shoes, safety rules, types of hazards and regulations regarding different exercise formats and the use of exercise equipment.

7. You will be administering emergency first aid, treating minor chronic disabilities, wrapping injuries, or referring injured persons to physicians.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – NSQF Level 3/4 course for ‘Personal Trainer’ or similar

After completing Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies, you can go for National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 3/4 training and certificate for ‘Personal Trainer’, ‘Primary Years Physical Activity Facilitator’, ‘Gym Assistant’ or similar awarded by Sports, Physical Education, Fitness and Leisure Skills Council (SPEFL-SC) of India. The total number of training hours is 200-600.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – work in any field for at least 3/4 years - Fitness Training Certificate courses / Diploma courses

After completing Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies, you can work in any field for at least 3-4 years till you are at least 18 years of age. Then you can go for various fitness training professional certificate courses like K11 personal trainer course, NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine), ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association), NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist), ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) CPT (Certified Personal Trainer), SCW Fitness Education or Diploma courses in Personal Training conducted by various fitness institutes across the country.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies – MES course for ‘Advanced Fitness Training Course’

After completing Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies, you can go for Modular Employable Skills (MES) course in ‘Advanced Fitness Training’ under Skill Development Initiative Scheme (SDIS) framework approved by National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT).

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies – work in a gymnasium for 2-3 years - Fitness Training Certificate courses / Diploma courses

After completing Class 10, you can finish Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies. You need to be at least 18 years of age for employment. Then you can work in any gymnasium / fitness centre for 2-3 years. Then you can go for various fitness training certificate courses like K11 personal trainer course, NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine), ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association), NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist), ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) CPT (Certified Personal Trainer), SCW Fitness Education or Diploma courses in Personal Training conducted by various fitness institutes across the country.

Then you can go for various fitness training certificate courses like K11 personal trainer course, NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine), ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association), NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist), ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) CPT (Certified Personal Trainer), SCW Fitness Education or Diploma courses in Personal Training conducted by various fitness institutes across the country.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

Fitness Instructors need specific and formal training hence pursuing certificate courses related to the field is necessary. However, you can also join any local gymnasium and keep learning while on the job without being certified. Then you can go for professional certification courses after working in the local gymnasium for a few years.

After Class 10, you can go for:

1. NSQF training courses.

2. Diploma / Certificate courses.

After Class 11-12, you can go for:

1. B. Voc or other Bachelor degree courses in any discipline.

2. Diploma / Certificate courses.

3. MES courses.

Salary Offered  

1. In the entry-level jobs: You may get about Rs. 6,000.00 – Rs.15,000.00 or more per month.

2. After having 1-6 years of experience, you may expect about Rs. 10,000 – Rs. 25, 000 per month or more.

3. After having 6-12 years of experience, you may get about Rs. 15,000.00 – Rs. 45,000 per month or more.

4. In the senior level jobs, with 12-20 years of work experience, you may expect to get about Rs. 35,000 – Rs. 70,000 per month or even more.

5. If you start working independently after a few years of experience in a fitness centre / gymnasium, you may start earning more. If you work hard and develop good contacts, you may get a lot of clients to help them at their own homes or gymnasiums. There are opportunities to work for sports clubs and teams also. You will earn much more in these work opportunities. If you can become a personal fitness trainer for a celebrity, then you can earn in a few lacs every month.
