As a Pedicurist and Manicurist, you will provide cosmetic treatment for the feet and toenails as well for the fingernails and hands to people at salons, spas, and even at homes.
Pedicure not only involves cosmetic treatment for the feet but also involves taking care of the skin up to the knees. Various products and procedures are used for this purpose.
Manicure involves many cosmetic and beauty treatment such as cutting, clipping and shaping fingernails, polishing of the fingernails and massage of the hands.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
As a Pedicurist and Manicurist:
1. You will be keeping work stations clean and sterilize tools, such as brushes, nail-cutters, scissors, files, etc.
2. You will be preparing customers’ nail cuticles with water and oil, using cuticle knives for pushing back cuticles and trimming them with scissors.
3. You will be cleaning customers/client’s nails in soapy water, with the use of swabs or files.
4. You will remove and clean dead skin from customers’ feet using pumice stones or other materials.
5. You will be cleaning or removing nail polish of clients using liquid nail polish remover and swabs.
6. You will be shaping, cutting, clipping, and smoothing customers’ nails to make them look good.
7. You may provide various pedicure methods on clients such as fish spa, paraffin pedicure and spa pedicure (using a mask).
8. You will apply various products to exfoliate customers’ hand and feet skins as well as to moisturize.
9. You will massage customers’ hands, feet, and legs up to the knees
10. You will be advising clients on hand and feet care and providing them knowledge of various products and colors.
11. You will be applying an undercoat and clear or colored polish onto nails with brush.
12. Convincing the customers to buy products and cosmetics, or demonstrating them about the products.
Career Entry Pathway
Class 5 in school – 0-12 months of work experience in a salon in pedicure and manicure services - Obtain an NSQF Level 3 Qualification as a Pedicurist and Manicurist
Study up to class 5 in school and then you may find work in a salon. Gather some work experience in pedicure and manicure services and then obtain an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 3 qualification in Pedicurist and Manicurist. Even if you do not get a work opportunity, you can take the necessary training in pedicure and manicure and then obtain the NSQF Level 3 qualification in Pedicurist and Manicurist. You must attain an age of 18 years to be eligible to get this Level 3 qualification.
Class 8 in school – ITI Certificate in Beautician Assistant / Obtain an NSQF Level 3 Qualification as an Assistant Beauty Therapist
Study up to class 8 in school and then do a certificate course in Beautician Assistant from an ITI OR enroll for an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 3 training program in Assistant Beauty Therapist to get a Level 3 qualification certificate. You will get a job as an Assistant Beauty Therapist or as a Pedicurist / Manicurist in a salon or similar beauty care establishment.
Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Do a course in Beautician/ similar field or get on-the-job training
Study up to class 10 in school. Then you can do a course in Beautician / Skincare / Pedicure & Manicure/ Makeup services / a similar course or even get on-the-job training while working in a salon.
Required Qualification & Competencies
1. After Class 5 in school, you can obtain an NSQF Level 3 qualification in Pedicurist and Manicurist.
2. After Class 8 in school, you can study for a certificate in Beautician Assistant from an ITI or a similar course.
3. After Class 10, you can study Beautician / Hair and Skin Care / Hair and Beauty Care / Skin and Beauty Care / a similar course in an ITI or a vocational training institution.

After your ITI Certificate in Beautician Assistant / NSQF Level 3 Certificate in Assistant Beauty Therapist, you can get a job as a Pedicurist or Manicurist in any salon or spa care center.

Pedicurists are not only involved in providing cosmetic treatment for the feet but also involved in taking care of the skin up to the knees of the clients. Various products and procedures are used for this purpose.
Manicurist
Manicurists are involved in providing many cosmetic and beauty treatment such as cutting, clipping and shaping fingernails, polishing of the fingernails and massage of the hands.
CAREER GROWTH
Growth opportunities in this career are limited. However, you can obtain various levels of NSQF qualifications after due experience and after attending the requisite training programs. These qualifications will help you to move into a career as a Beauty Therapist, Beauty and Wellness Advisor, Aesthetician, etc.
Salary Offered
1. As an apprentice or trainee, you will be earning about Rs. 3000-5000 a month.
2. After 1-3 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 8,000-10,000 a month.
3. After 5-10 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 12,000-25,000 or more a month. Besides, many salons allow you to accept tips from customers.

Future is bright for this career. Awareness of beauty care and wellness products/treatments is at an all-time high in India. As per the report of IBEF (India Brand Equity Foundation), the beauty, cosmetic and grooming market will reach US Dollar 20 billion by 2025. In India, the herbal cosmetics industry is also driving growth in the beauty business and it is expected to grow at a rate of 12% over the next few years.
