As a Nail Artist, you will use creative designs to paint and embellish your customers’ fingernails and toenails. Nail art is a visual art to make nails look attractive.

As a Tattoo Artist, you will insert various types of inks, dyes, and pigments into the skins of your clients to create body art or designs which could be temporary or permanent. You will create body art or design which could be purely for embellishment, for conveying something meaningful or just to depict a picture, as per the choice of your customer.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

As a Nail Artist:

1. You will first trim, shape and polish the fingernails or the toenails of your customers.

2. Before trimming, shaping and polishing, you may also provide pedicure and manicure to your customers.

3. You will use various types of nail art and design templates for creating designs on the fingernails and toenails of your customers. You may also use innovative designs created by you.

4. You will use acrylic paints, nail gel, and nail polishes or varnishes to create nail art or design. You may use acrylic powder for 3-D art, glitters, etc.

5. You will be using various tools and techniques such as nail art pains, dotters, nail art brushes, stickers, water marbling, etc. nail

6. You may fit fashionable artificial nails on the fingernails also, as per the choice of your client.

As a Tattoo Artist:

1. You will be applying skin protecting lotions on customer’s body parts where a tattoo is to be made.

2. You will use designs made in stencils to create a tattoo on a customer’s body or do an innovative design.

3. You will be using an electric tattoo machine to insert inks, dyes or pigments into the customer’s body to make a tattoo.

4. You will always have to maintain hygiene and keep all your tools sterilized to reduce the chance of infection and other health hazards.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 8 in school – 0 -12 months of experience as a Pedicurist and Manicurist – Obtain NSQF Level 3 Qualification in Assistant Nail Technician

After your Class 8 in school and after having 0-12 months of experience as a Pedicurist and Manicurist, you obtain an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 3 Certification in Assistant Nail Technician.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – 2 to 3 years of experience as a Beauty Therapist/Nail Expert – Obtain NSQF Level 5 Qualification in Senior Nail Technician

After your Class 10 in school and after having 2 or 3 years of experience as a Beauty Therapist or Nail Expert, you can obtain an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 5 Certification in Senior Nail Technician.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – 2 to 3 years of experience as an apprentice under the supervision of an expert Tattoo Artist – Obtain NSQF Level 5 Qualification in Tattoo Artist

After your Class 10 in school and after having 2 or 3 years of experience as an apprentice under the supervision of an expert Tattoo Artist, you can obtain an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 5 Certification in Tattoo Artist.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

For Nail Artist:

For becoming a Nail Artist, you may take training in Nail Art from a private institute or may work as a Pedicurist and Manicurist in a salon and then obtain an NSQF Level 3 qualification in Assistant Nail Technician.

For Tattoo Artist:

After completing Class 10 in school and after having 2 or 3 years of apprenticeship training under an expert Tattoo Artist, you can obtain an NSQF Level 5 qualification and become a Tattoo Artist.

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

1. You should have interests for Realistic Occupations. Realistic occupations involve more practical and hands-on activities than paperwork or office work. Realistic occupations often involve physical activities for getting things done using various tools and equipment.

2. You should have interests for Enterprising Occupations. Enterprising occupations involve taking initiatives, initiating actions, and planning to achieve goals, often business goals.

3. You should have interests for Conventional Occupations. Conventional occupations involve repetitive and routine tasks as well as fixed processes or procedures for getting things done.

4. You should have knowledge about Personal Care Service - Knowledge of how to provide various assistance and services to others. This includes looking after the needs of individuals, understanding what they need and provide all assistance at home or elsewhere.

5. Active Listening Skills - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, understanding the points being made by others, asking questions, etc.

6. Service orientation - Skills in or a keen interest to help and assist people.

7. Finger Dexterity - The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.

8. Manual Dexterity - The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.

9. Inter-personal Ability: The ability to build and maintain good relationships with others at workplaces and elsewhere.

10. Disciplined in your action and You are always or mostly behaviour.

11. You are always or mostly helpful to others.

12. You are always calm or generally remain calm in most situations.

13. You are always or mostly caring, supportive, sympathetic and kind to others.

Career - Job Opportunities & Profiles 

Most Nail Technicians and Tattoo Artists work independently. However, some salons recruit Nail Technicians. Tattoo Artists may get to work at a studio run by an expert and experienced Tattoo Artist before being on their own.

CAREER GROWTH

As a Nail/Tattoo Artist, you can grow in your workplace from a trainee to specialist Nail/Tattoo Artist in 3-5 years. You may also open your own Tattoo Studio or serve customers independently at their homes. However, as a Tattoo Artist, you can’t serve the customers independently at their homes. If you work well and your work becomes popular, you can grow very fast.

Salary Offered  

As a Nail ArtistA

1. As an apprentice or trainee, you will be earning about Rs. 3000-5000 a month.

2. After 1-3 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 8,000-10,000 a month.

3. After 5-10 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 12,000-25,000 or more a month. Besides, many salons allow you to accept tips from customers.

4. You can earn much more if you set up your own studio or become an independent Nail Artist. Many celebrities and rich customers ask for services at home. You can earn a lot. 

As a Tattoo Artist

1. As an apprentice or trainee, you will be earning about Rs. 2000-6000 a month.

2. After 1-3 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 7,000-10,000 a month.

3. After 5-10 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 15,000-25,000 or more a month. Besides, many salons allow you to accept tips from customers.

4. You can earn much more if you set up your own Tattoo studio and become an independent Tattoo Artist.

MONTHLY EARNINGS IN INDIAN RUPEES

1. Entry level: 0 - 2 years of work experience  

2. Junior Level: From 1 to 12 years of work experience

3. Mid Level: From 5 to 20+ years of work experience

4. Senior Level: From 10 to 25+ years of work experience (there could be exceptions in some high-end technical, financial, engineering, creative, management, sports, and other careers; also in the near future, people will reach these levels much faster in many careers and in some careers, these levels will have no meaning as those careers will be completely tech skill driven such as even now, there is almost no level in a Cyber Security Expert’s job)

As a Nail Artist / Tattoo Artist, you will be:

Working directly with people – you will be working directly with customers.

Assisting and caring – you will be assisting others, taking care of others and provide personal care services.

Communicating with others – you will have to communicate with customers, co-workers, and others to perform your tasks and duties.

Establishing and maintaining good relations – you will need to establish good working relationships with your customers, co-workers, and others.

Updating professional knowledge – you should learn continuously and update professional knowledge.

Future Prospects 

Future is bright for this career. Awareness of beauty care and wellness products/treatments is at an all-time high in India. As per the report of IBEF (India Brand Equity Foundation), the beauty, cosmetic and grooming market will reach US Dollar 20 billion by 2025. In India, the herbal cosmetics industry is also driving growth in the beauty business and it is expected to grow at a rate of 12% over the next few years.
