About Career
1. As a Mason (Special Finishing) or Plasterer, you will be doing various types of finishing work on walls, ceilings, floors, window frames, etc. In most cases, you will be applying POP (Plaster of Paris) on cement walls to give it a smooth finish and look. In general, in the construction of the building, POP is first applied on cement walls and ceilings before painting. You may also work to apply white cement to close any gaps between floor tiles or wall tiles or between cement walls and window or door frames.
2. Other than the above, you may also create decorative surfaces using POP as per design and specifications on walls and ceilings.
3. You will use cement washes on walls and ceilings plastered with a mix of cement and sand. Cement wash is a mixture of cement and water. Cement wash is a semi-liquid mixture and it is used for smoothening walls and ceilings.
4. You will do grit wash on walls and surfaces (especially building exterior walls). Grit wash is also known as exposed aggregate plaster.
5. Grit wash is a hard decorative finish which can withstand harsh weather conditions.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
As a Mason (Special Finishing) or Plasterer, you will be performing all or some of the following roles and responsibilities:-
1. You will smoothen and level the surfaces on which you would apply POP, white cement, gypsum, dolomite chips, grit wash, cement wash or similar other finishing materials.
2. You will gather and mix various ingredients for carrying out POP plastering, cement washing, grit washing, decorative surfacing or similar job.
3. Carry out the different plastering and finishing work on surfaces as per specifications.

Career Entry Pathway
Class 8 in school – 8 years of work experience as an un-trained worker in masonry work – Obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification in Mason Special Finishing
After completing class 8 in school and after obtaining minimum 8 years of work experience as an un-trained worker in masonry work, you may obtain an NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 4 qualification in Mason Special Finishing. For this qualification, you need to be 18 years of age and must have completed 16-18 weeks of training in the trade of Mason Special Finishing
Class 5 in school - 5 years of work experience as an un-trained worker in masonry work – Obtain an NSQF Level 3 qualification in Mason General trade – Work experience of 3 years as a General Mason - Obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification in Mason Special Finishing
After completing class 5 in school and after obtaining 5 years of work experience as an un-trained worker in masonry work, then you may obtain an NSQF Level 3 qualification in Mason General trade. Further after obtaining 3 years of work experience as a General Mason, you may obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification in Mason Special Finishing
Class 5 in school – 2 years of work experience as an un-trained mason helper – Obtain an NSQF Level 2 qualification in Assistant Mason – 2 years of work experience - Obtain an NSQF Level 3 qualification in Mason General trade – Work experience of 3 years as a General Mason - Obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification in Mason Special Finishing
After completing class 5 in school and after having 2 years of work experience as an un-trained mason helper, you may obtain an NSQF Level 2 qualification in Assistant Mason. After which you may obtain 2 years of work experience as a non-trained and non-qualified worker and then obtain an NSQF Level 3 qualification in Mason General trade. Further for obtaining NSQF Level 4 qualification in Mason Special Finishing, you need to have 3 years of work experience as a General Mason
Class 5 in school –Obtain an NSQF Level 1 qualification in Mason Helper – 9 months of work experience - Obtain an NSQF Level 2 qualification in Assistant Mason – 2 years of work experience - Obtain an NSQF Level 3 qualification in Mason General trade – Work experience of 3 years as a General Mason - Obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification in Mason Special Finishing
After completing class 5 in school, you may obtain an NSQF Level 1 qualification in Mason Helper. You may then obtain an NSQF Level 2 qualification in Assistant Mason after having 9 months of work experience as a Helper Masson. You can also obtain an NSQF Level 3 qualification in Mason General trade if you have completed 2 years of work experience as a non-trained and non-qualified worker. Further for obtaining NSQF Level 4 qualification in Mason Special Finishing, you need to first have 3 years of work experience as a General Mason.
Required Qualification & Competencies
If you are not inclined to higher education after class 5 in school then you may obtain:
1. NSQF Level 1 qualification in Mason Helper
2. NSQF Level 2 qualification in Assistant Mason
3. NSQF Level 3 qualification in Mason General trade
4. NSQF Level 4 qualification in Mason Special Finishing
However, if you have completed class 8 in school, then also you may obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification in Mason Special Finishing.

There are no permanent jobs. You will be on a contractual job for a building construction project. You will be contracted by various labor contractors or contractor firms. You will be paid daily wages.
Career Growth
From being a Mason (Special Finishing) or Plasterer, you can grow to become a site supervisor or labor contractor for masonry work.
Salary Offered
1. You will be earning daily wages in the range of Rs. 380-400 per day in the beginning.
2. With 8-10 years of experience, this can go up to about Rs. 500 – 550 per day. Per day will mean 8 hours of a shift.
3. You may also get work overseas, especially in the Middle Eastern and North African countries. Wages there would be much more. You can earn about Rs. 40,000-50,000 or even more per month on an average.

4. Communicating with co-workers and others - Communicating with people in writing, verbally or otherwise inside your workplace and various other people who have professional relationships with your place of work including vendors, government officials, etc. or with people at large.
5. Assessing and evaluating quality - Assessing and evaluating the quality of materials, systems, processes, products, services, etc.
Future Prospects
In India, the construction industry is expected to reach US$ 1 trillion by 2030. It is also expected that this industry will contribute around 13% of the country’s GDP by 2025. Also, as per the scheme of Government of India Housing for All is expected to bring US$1.3 trillion in the housing sector by 2025. Hence, the need for plasterers in the construction industry will be an all-time high.
