About Career
As a Carpenter, you will construct, assemble, fit, and repair various types of wooden structures such as beds, cabinets, dressing tables, dining tables, reading tables, chairs and sofa sets using different types of timbers, plywood, particle boards, laminates, metal frames, and glass.
As a Carpenter, you may also be involved in the construction of buildings. In this field, you will construct, assemble, fit and repair door and window frames, wooden doors and windows, window or door shutters, interior fixtures, etc. using timbers, plywood, and other materials. You may do similar tasks for various other structures such as ships, motor vehicles, and several types of infrastructure such as a bus shelter, wooden houses, etc.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
As a Carpenter, you will:
1. Study sketches, drawing, blue-prints, building plans, 3-D images, samples or prototypes to understand the specifications required for construction and estimate the type and quantity of different materials required.
2. Buy or source the right timber, plywood, particle board, metal frames, laminate, glass and different other types of fixtures required for construction.
3. Draw and mark measurements on timber, plywood and other materials for cutting and preparing different parts for construction and assembly.
4. Saw, chisel or otherwise smoothen the surface of timber and other materials as required.
5. Use chisels, drills and other carpentry tools to make joints and different parts of the finished structure.
6. Assemble various parts and construct the finished structure by using glue, screws, nails, doweling (a type of pin), etc.
7. Fix different types of metal, wooden, glass and other fixtures as well as hinges, rods, etc. on the constructed structures.
8. Pastes laminate on a wooden surface, polish, and otherwise smoothen or finish surfaces.
9. Construct and fit doorframes, window frames, doors, and windows.
10. Repair various wooden structures such as old cabinets, tables, and beds as well as building parts such as doors and windows.
11. Keep work area clean; keep machines and various tools clean; maintain safety standards at workplaces.

Career Entry Pathway
Class 5 in school – Obtain a training and qualification in Shuttering Carpentry (NSQF Level 3) – Work opportunity
After completing class 5 in school, you need to obtain training and apply for NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 3 certification in Shuttering Carpentry from any vocational institution or other similar Institute
Class 5 in school –Obtain a training and an NSQF Level 3 qualification in Shuttering Carpentry - Work for minimum 2 years – Obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification in Carpenter-Wooden Furniture
After completing Class 5 in school, you need to obtain training and an NSQF Level 3 qualification in Shuttering Carpentry. After which you have to obtain minimum 2 years of work experience as an assistant in furniture making, and then you may apply for NSQF Level 4 Certification in Carpenter-Wooden Furniture from any vocational institute or another similar institute. For this certificate, you need to be 18 years of age.
Class 8 in school – Obtain Certificate/Diploma from ITI in Carpenter trade
After completing class 8 in school, you can apply for Certificate/Diploma in Carpenter Trade from any ITI (Industrial Training Institute) or vocational institution or other similar Institute. This course is usually of 1 year of duration (two semesters each of six months of duration)
Class 8 - Apply for Carpentry Course from NIOS or other vocational institution
After completing class 8 in school, you can enroll for 1-year Carpentry course from NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) or other vocational institution.
Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Complete a training program in Carpenter (Engineering) trade under the Craftsmen Training Scheme of Government of India
After completing class 10, you need to complete NSQF Level 4 Certification in Carpenter trade under the Craftsmen Training Scheme of Government of India from any vocational institute or another similar institute. This course is of 1 year of duration (two semesters each of six months duration)
Required Qualification & Competencies
After Class 5 in school
You can take training in Carpenter trade and obtain an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) qualification Level 3 certification then you 2 years of work experience you can obtain an NSQF Level 4 Certification in Carpenter-Wooden Furniture
After Class 8 in school
You can take training in Carpenter trade in an ITI or from a vocational institute or you can study the course in Carpentry from NIOS.
After Class 10 with any subjects
You can take training in Carpenter (Engineering) trade from a vocational training institute under the Craftsmen Training Scheme of Government of India.

Career - Job Opportunities & Profiles
Depending upon your training and qualification, at the beginning of your career, you can get a job as:
1. Assistant Shuttering Carpentry (NSQF Level 3)
2. Chargehand or Assistant Carpenter (NSQF Level 4)
3. Apprentice Carpenter (NSQF Level 4)
At the beginning of your career, you will get work opportunities with established carpenters, carpentry contractors, and furniture stores. Carpentry contractors are hired by various individuals, organizations and construction companies.
You may also get a job with State or Central Government departments such as PWD (Public Works Department), Municipal Corporations, Indian Railways, etc.
Career Growth
Career growth opportunities are limited. You only grow with your experience. With 10-12 years or more experience, you may look forward to getting opportunities as Supervisors/Site Supervisors/Master Carpenter, etc.
Salary Offered
1. At the beginning of your career, you may earn about Rs. 5,000 – 6,000 per month. Remember that most carpenters are paid on a per day basis.
2. With 3-5 years of experience, you may earn about Rs. 8,000-12,000 or even more per month.
3. With 8-10 years of experience, you may earn about Rs. 10,000 – 30,000 or even more per month.
4. In Government jobs, you may look forward to a much higher earning. You will begin with about Rs. 18,000 a month. You will get yearly increments and you may look forward to earning about Rs. 40,000 – 60,000 a month after 15-20 years of experience.
5. If you are working as an Individual Professional Carpenter, then you can earn around Rs. 30,000 – Rs. 50,000 per project. Also if you start your own Carpentry business then you can earn around Rs. 60,000 – Rs. 80,000 per month.

As per the study by World Bank, India’s organized furniture industry is expected to have a growth of 20% per annum over the next few years and is projected to cross US$ 32 billion. It is also expected that Luxury Furniture Market will grow by $ 27.01 billion, and will register a compounded annual growth rate of 4.1% during the forecast. This shows a moderate growth prospects in the work opportunities in this career.
