They evaluate the principles and processes of design for creating high-quality social spaces and enhancing the public realm for the benefit of all in society. They plan & design public spaces, public infrastructure, public transportation, and housing areas. The scope of their work includes planning and designing townships, large urban areas, large rural areas, cities, etc.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
As a Planner, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities along with other associated duties:
1. You will design, promote, or administer government plans or policies affecting land use, zoning, public utilities, community facilities, housing, or transportation.
2. You will conduct highly technical research & analysis, field investigations, surveys, impact studies, or other research to evaluate findings, identify significant issues, determine options, and develop recommendations for compiling & analyzing data on economic, social, regulatory, or physical factors affecting land use.
3. You will identify opportunities or develop plans for complex sustainability projects or programs to improve energy efficiency, minimize pollution or waste, or restore natural systems.
4. You will develop plans for public or alternative transportation systems for urban or regional locations to reduce carbon output associated with transportation.
5. You will review and evaluate environmental impact reports about private or public planning projects or programs.
6. You will conduct research and plan for grant funds which involves utilizing the Internet to research on grant opportunities, related publications & contacts, and meeting with private foundations on possible sponsorships.
7. You will create, or requisition reports on land use data, including land area, and maps with geographic variables, such as population density.
8. You will prepare technical material on transportation planning, park planning, land studies, urban design, site analysis, and related planning documents.
9. You will participate in public meetings with government officials, social scientists, lawyers, developers, the public, or special interest groups to formulate develop, or address issues regarding land use or community plans.
Career Entry Pathway
Class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies - Class 11-12 Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies - B Plan.
After completing Class 11-12 Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies, clear Paper 2B of the JEE Main exam to enroll in a B Plan (Bachelor of Planning) program.
After completing Class 11-12 Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies, clear Paper 2B of the JEE Main exam to enroll in a B Plan (Bachelor of Planning) program. Thereafter pursue M Plan in Environmental Planning, Housing, Regional Planning, Transport Planning, Urban Planning/ Master’s in Urban Design/ Master in Landscape Architecture.
After completing Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies, clear the NATA exam or Paper 2A of the JEE Main exam to enroll in a B Arch (Bachelor of Architecture) program. Thereafter pursue M Plan in Environmental Planning, Housing, Regional Planning, Transport Planning, Urban Planning / Master’s in Urban Design.
After completing Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies, clear the NATA exam or Paper 2A of the JEE Main exam to enroll in a B Arch (Bachelor of Architecture) program. Thereafter pursue M Plan in Environmental Planning, Housing, Regional Planning, Transport Planning, Urban Planning / Master’s in Urban Design.
After completing Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies and then BE/ B Tech in Environmental Engineering or Bachelor’s in Environmental Science/ Environmental Management, clear the GATE/ CEED exam to enroll for M Plan in Environmental Planning.
After completing Class 11-12 Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies and then an Undergraduate degree in Geography/ Economics/ Sociology, go for a Master’s degree in your respective subject. Thereafter pursue M Plan with Environmental Planning/ Regional Planning/ Urban Planning.
After completing Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies, clear the NATA exam/ Paper 2A of the JEE Main exam and then complete a 5-year B Arch course (Bachelor of Architecture). Then appear for the GATE Architecture exam and then pursue a Joint MCP (Master in City Planning) & PhD course.
After completing Class 10 with any subjects, Science and Mathematics, you can opt for a Diploma in Architectural Assistantship (2 years)/ Interior Design (2 years)/ Civil Engineering (3 years). Then you will have to work for at least 5 years and then clear the NATA exam (the score is valid for 1 year only). Then you will have to appear for the AIIA Exam Associate of the Indian Institute of Architects (Associate-ship by examination), clear it, and then enroll for an M Plan in Environmental Planning, Housing, Regional Planning, Transport Planning, Urban Planning / Master’s in Urban Design.
After completing Class 11-12 with any subject as per the scheme of studies, go for a BA in Economics/ Sociology and then an MA in the respective subject followed by an M Plan with Housing.
After completing Class 11-12 Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies, go for a B Sc in Economics followed by an M Sc in Economics. Then you can go for M Plan in Housing.
After completing Class 11-12 Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies, you can go for a B.Sc. in Economics/ Statistics followed by a Master’s degree in the respective subject. Then you can pursue M Plan with Regional Planning.
After completing Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry along with Mathematics / Computer Science & any other subject as per the scheme of studies, you can go for a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics/ Computer Science/ Statistics/ Operational Research. Then go for a Master’s degree in Operations Research/ Applied Operational Research. then you can pursue an M Plan in Transport Planning.
After completing Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry along with Mathematics / Computer Science & any other subject as per the scheme of studies, clearing NATA exam/ Paper 2A of JEE Main Exam and 5-year B Arch course, you can proceed to complete your Ph.D. directly if you are a recipient UGC/CSIR/DBT/DST/Inspire/ICMR Fellowship award.
After completing Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies, you can complete both B Plan and M Plan courses to proceed to higher studies or PhD (Doctoral studies).
After completing Class 11-12 with any subject as per the scheme of studies, you can go for a B Sc/ BA in Economics, Sociology, Geography, Statistics, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, and Design field or Fine Arts, Mathematics, Computer Science, Operational Research followed by a Master’s degree. Then you can pursue an M Plan and then your PhD (Doctoral) studies.
Required Qualification & Competencies
1. To get into this field, you will need to pass the Class 10 examination with all subjects as per the scheme of studies. Then you must complete Class 11-12.
2. Instead of Class 11-12, you may also opt for a Diploma in Architectural Assistantship (2 years)/ Interior Design (2 years)/ Civil Engineering (3 years), then obtain work experience for 5 years, then clear NATA exam and AIIA Exam to pursue Master’s in Environmental Planning, Housing, Regional Planning, Transport Planning, Urban Planning / M Des in Industrial Design/ Master’s in Urban Design.
3. Then you can do a Bachelor's degree/ AMIE in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering Construction Engineering, or any Engineering discipline or in Economics, Sociology, Geography, Statistics, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, and Design field of Fine Arts, Architecture, Mathematics, Computer Science, Operational Research.

1. Environmental Planner
Environmental Planners are trained in methods & methodologies for scientific evaluation/ assessment of several factors to plan environmentally sustainable development of human settlements & regions. Such scientific evaluation/ assessment at the planning stage is capable of preventing many degradations that follow later. Implications of various environmental degradations viz. ozone layer depletion, desertification, global warming, air pollution, ocean pollution, species extinction, deforestation, flooding, etc. are extensively studied and analyzed by Environmental Planners.
2. Planner (Housing)
Housing/ Community Planners are dedicated to various facets of habitat development such as housing design/ development/ policies/ programs, real estate planning & markets, disaster mitigation, elements of policy & finance, infrastructure & technology, building materials & technology, project formulation, construction industry, non-formal housing development & slums, and housing for disaster affected areas. They work with local & central urban authorities, housing finance companies, private & public sector organizations, as well as research institutions & consultancy firms.
3. Transport Planner
Transport Planners are focused on planning, designing, operations & management of national, regional, and urban transport systems; transport plans and policies; development of mathematical models for transport demand projections; preparation of integrated land use transport planning; traffic engineering & design. 4. Planner (Urban Planning & Civic Design)

1. If you join as a Graduate Apprentice/Trainee/ Intern, then after completion of your training, you may be positioned as an Assistant Planner/ Section Officer/ Consultant/ Deputy Planner or similar positions. However, if you join after your Master’s degree, you can directly get a job in any one of these positions.
2. After 5-8+ years of experience, you can expect to become an Associate Planner/ Senior Current Planner/ Senior Urban Designer/ Senior Landscape Architect/ Master Planning Executive/ Class I Officer/ Planning Lead/ Design Leader/ Deputy Manager/ Manager/ Senior Manager or similar positions.
3.
