About Career 

Landscape Architecture is all about the efficient and effective use of land, water, plant types and physical structures to provide aesthetically beautiful and sustainable infrastructures. The scope of Landscape Architecture extends to landscaping, landscape gardening, landscape design, landscape planning landscape contracting, etc. A Landscape Architect’s work usually ranges from creating public parks and parkways to site planning for offices or university campuses; from designing residential buildings and complexes to designing civil infrastructures and management of degrading landscapes such as landfills and so on.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

As a Landscape Architect, you would be engaged in one or more of the following roles and responsibilities:

1. You would meet with clients, and building architects to understand the requirements of a project

2. You would prepare site plans, specifications, or cost estimates for land development.

3. You would analyze data on conditions such as site location, drainage, or structure location for environmental reports or landscaping plans.

4. You would design, plan, and supervise the construction of landscapes, gardens, etc.

5. You would be responsible for the safety, usefulness, and aesthetics of their designs.

6. You would also design landscapes that satisfy their client's needs while conforming to the laws and regulations of the areas in which the designs will be built.

7. You would discuss the objectives, requirements, and budget of a project.

8. You would consult with other professionals about the design of an environment.

9. You will use Design Software’s such as Autocad, Adobe Photoshop, Sketchup, Revit, CS Design Software, Realtime Landscaping Architect, LANDWorksCAD, KeySCAPE, PRO Landscape, VizTerra, VirtualProperty Architect, Earthscapes software, etc.

10. You will be involved in performing site analyses that include the assessment of current plants, soil conditions, lighting, the view, and the architectural style of the house.

11. You will work in collaboration with clients, landscape designers, landscape architects, garden designers, architects, general contractors, artisans, etc.

Who is Eligible

Class 12th Pass

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies - Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies - Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) – Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) in Landscape Architecture – Work as Landscape Architect.

After completing class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies and class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies, you can go for Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) followed by Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) in Landscape Architecture. After completing a master’s degree you may also become a member of the Indian Society of Landscape Architects (ISOLA) and then start working as a Landscape Architect.

After completing class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies and class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies, you can go for a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.). After completing graduation you must then get training/Internship in the area of Landscape Architecture/Design and work as a Landscape Designer/ Landscape Architect.

After completing class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies and class 11-12 Mathematics along with any other subject as per the scheme of studies, you can go for Bachelor of Planning (B.Plan). After completing graduation you must look for internship opportunities at various Landscaping & gardening design companies and work as a Landscape Designer.

After completing class 10 with any subjects, Science and Mathematics, and class 11-12 in Science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics you can go for a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) followed by a Master of Planning (M.Plan.) in Urban Design. After completing your master’s degree you can then start working as a Landscape Designer.

After completing class 10 with any subjects, Science, and Mathematics, and class 11-12 in Science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology you can go for a Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture. After graduation, you need to pursue a diploma in landscape design and then start working as a Landscape Designer.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

1. After completing higher secondary education you can go for a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) followed by a Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) in Landscape Architecture. After completing a master’s degree you can also become a member of the Indian Society of Landscape Architects (ISOLA) and then start working as a Landscape Architect.

2. After completing higher secondary education you can go for a Bachelor of Planning (B.Plan). After completing graduation you must look for internship opportunities at various Landscaping & gardening design companies and work as a Landscape Designer

3. After completing higher secondary education you can you can go for a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) followed by a Master of Planning (M.Plan.) in Urban Design. After completing your master’s degree you can then start working as a Landscape Architect

Undergraduate Degree / Honours Diploma / Graduate Diploma (equivalent to a Degree) Programs for which the minimum eligibility is a pass in Higher Secondary / Class XII School Leaving examination.

Postgraduate Degree / Diploma / Certificate Programs for which the minimum eligibility is a pass in Graduation / equivalent Diploma program like Honours Diploma or Graduate Diploma.

Specialisation Tracks In This Career

1. Landscape Architect (Residential)

Residential Landscape Architects are involved in the landscape design and site planning of residential landscapes such as private residences. They specialize in creating residential architecture. Some examples of residential architecture are the trump towers in Kolkata, Freedom Park Life, and Revanta in Gurgaon, etc.


2. Landscape Architect (Leisure & Hospitality)

Leisure and Hospitality Architects are involved in the landscape design and site planning of various luxury and leisure resorts and farmhouses. Some examples of Leisure and hospitality are DLF Golf & Sports Complex, Stellar Gymkhana, Infinity Resorts Bay Island Resorts, etc.


3. Landscape Architect (Institutional & Learning)

Institutional Landscape Architects are involved in landscape design and planning of schools and university campuses. For example, Oracle Landscape, a landscape architectural landscape design and planner, is involved in Site planning, Landscape design as well as Construction documentation for the Pearl Academy of Fashion Design in Rajasthan.


4. Landscape Designer

Landscape Designers are involved in the integration of landscape planning and landscape design of a property or land. They specialize in the aesthetical, horticultural, and environmentally sustainable components of landscape design i.e. they focus on beautifying a landscape using the garden design components in designing and planning.


5. Garden Designer

Garden designers are professionals involved in the process of designing and creating plans for landscapes and gardens within them. They are skilled specialists in the field of landscape design and garden design. They study and survey the site, plan and prepare drawings as per client requirements, and evaluate and identify the most suitable methods and concepts in landscape & garden design.


Career Growth

1. After completing a Bachelor’s degree you may start as an Architectural intern/ Trainee Landscape Architect or Assistant Landscape Architect in a company or organization, you may be promoted to Senior Landscape Architect. Later you may be promoted to  Senior Project Architect or Chief Landscape Architect. In most companies and organizations the title of Landscape Architect may remain the same but the job role and responsibilities may vary as per seniority and years of expertise.

2. After completing a master’s level degree in Landscape Architecture you may start as Assistant Professor and then as Associate Professor in Landscape Architecture. You may further progress as a Professor and later on as Head of the Landscape Architectural Department.

3. After having acquired sufficient years of experience, say, 8-15 years, many Landscape Architects turn to working as independent or self-employed Landscape Architect or opening their firms. They take up projects from prospective clients and deliver work as per client requirements.

Salary Offered  

1. At an Entry level, as an Assistant Landscape Architect or Intern, you may earn around Rs. 20,000 to 30,000 per month.

2. At the junior level, with an experience of around 2-4 years, you may earn around Rs. 30,000 - 45,000 per month.

3. At the middle level, with an experience of around 5-10 years, you may earn around Rs. 55,000 – 90,000 per month or even more.

4. At senior level with 15+ years of experience, you may earn around Rs. 80,000 – 2,40,000 per month or even more.
