A foreman is an expert supervisor who can train and guide his employees. He is an individual who is specialised, has immense knowledge in a particular trade, and therefore looks after overall management of the work. He is the middleman between managers and workers. He typically works in construction, management and industries involving repair.

Construction Foremen supervise labourers working in road construction, utility systems and other civil engineering projects. They are responsible for necessary communication between the workers and owners. They ensure the right use of equipment, maintaining the schedule as per plan and arranging all materials to be present at the construction site. They work for residential and commercial building construction projects. They are in charge of time management, hire new workers, and give raises and promotions. Foremen have to work overtime, if the project has to be completed on particular date. They have a significant role in training new workers. It is important that they guide the workers to follow all safety regulations. Most construction companies have Foremen Concrete, Foremen Reinforcement, Foremen wet finishing and flooring, etc.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

As a Foreman, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities:-

1. Training, instructing and evaluating staff or resolving their personal grievances.

2. Directing or coordinating construction activities at your workplace.

3. Reviewing production or construction orders or processing schedules for determining workforce requirements, stock requirements, or duty assignments, keeping in mind the budget and time limitations.

4. Resolving construction or processing problems by consulting the technical and administrative staff.

5. Coordinating or suggesting procedures for equipment or facility modification and maintenance, like the replacement of machines etc.

6. Creating and maintaining employee records, production reports and other official documents.

7. Examining samples of raw products and ensuring that finished products are of prescribed quantity/quality.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - training at an ITI or similar institute for any trade under ‘Engineering and Technologies’ group - NSQF Level 5 certificate for ‘Foreman’ or similar courses

After Class 10, you can go for training at any Industrial Training Institute (ITI), National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Regional Vocational Training Institute (RVTI), National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Industrial Training Center (ITC), Workshop Training Institute (WTI) or other vocational institutes for any trade under ‘Engineering and Technologies’ group like ‘Civil and Structural Engineering’, ‘Ceramics’, ‘Construction’, ‘Basic Quality Control’, ‘Advance Cleaning & Quality Control of Casting’, ‘Civil Supervisor & Drafts Man’, ‘Basic Engineering Skill’ or related courses. These are usually 2 to 3 year courses. Then you can pursue National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 5 Training and Certificate for ‘Foreman’, ‘Farm Workshop Foreman/ Supervisor’, ‘Foreman Erection’, ‘Foreman Fabrication’, ‘Foreman - Facade Installation’, ‘Foreman - False Ceiling and Dry wall Installer’, ‘Foreman Formwork’, ‘Foreman Reinforcement’, ‘Foreman Wet Finishing Flooring’ or similar courses. The total numbers of training hours vary between 200 and 800.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - NSQF Level 3/4 certificate for ‘Chargehand’ or similar courses - NSQF Level 5 certificate for ‘Foreman’ or similar courses

After Class 10, you can pursue National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 3/4 Training and Certificate for ‘Façade Installer’, ‘False Ceiling & Drywall Installer’, ‘Chargehand - Façade Installer’, ‘Chargehand - False Ceiling & Drywall Installer’, ‘Chargehand – Painting and Decorating’, ‘Chargehand - Piling’, ‘Chargehand - Precast Erection’, ‘Chargehand - Structural Erection’, ‘Chargehand Scaffolding - System’, ‘Chargehand Shuttering Carpenter - Conventional’, ‘Chargehand Shuttering Carpenter - System’ or similar courses. The total numbers of training hours vary between 200 and 800. Then you can go for National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 5 Training and Certificate for ‘Foreman’, ‘Farm Workshop Foreman/ Supervisor’, ‘Foreman Erection’, ‘Foreman Fabrication’, ‘Foreman - Facade Installation’, ‘Foreman - False Ceiling and Dry wall Installer’, ‘Foreman Formwork’, ‘Foreman Reinforcement’, ‘Foreman Wet Finishing Flooring’ or similar courses. The total numbers of training hours vary between 200 and 800.

After Class 10, you need to go for training at any Industrial Training Institute (ITI), National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Regional Vocational Training Institute (RVTI), National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Industrial Training Center (ITC), Workshop Training Institute (WTI) or other vocational institutes for any trade under ‘Engineering and Technologies’ group like ‘Civil and Structural Engineering’, ‘Ceramics’, ‘Construction’, ‘Basic Quality Control’, ‘Advance Cleaning & Quality Control of Casting’, ‘Civil Supervisor & Drafts Man’, ‘Basic Engineering Skill’ or related courses. These are usually 2 to 3 year courses. Then you need to work for at least 1-3 years at any construction site, manufacturing workshop or production warehouse to gain experience in any one engineering trade like garment production, machining, automotive repair, building construction, mining, plumbing equipment manufacturing etc. Then you can enroll for Skill Development Initiative Scheme (SDIS) course based on Modular Employable Skills (MES) framework for ‘Production Supervisor’, ‘Apparel Production Supervision’, ‘Production Supervision And Quality Control’, ‘Assistant Highway Works Supervisor’, ‘Assistant Works Supervisor’, ‘Highway Works Supervisor’, ‘Security Supervisor’, ‘Supervisor/Administrator’, ‘Operation Supervisor/ Executive’ or similar courses under the Ministry of Labour and Employment of India.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Polytechnic Diploma in Engineering trades – Lateral entry to 2nd year of B. Voc

After Class 10, you can go for a Diploma in Polytechnic colleges for engineering related trades like Production and Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architectural Assistantship, Automobile Engineering, Industry Integrated Electronics and Communication Engineering, Garment Technology, Instrumentation Technology or similar courses. Then you can take a lateral entry route into 2nd year of B. Voc (Bachelor of Vocation) courses like Metal Construction, Construction Skills, Garment Making & Fabric Printing, Warehouse Administration, Manufacturing Skills or related disciplines.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with any subject combination as per scheme of studies - NSQF Level 5 certificate for ‘Foreman’ or similar courses

After Class 12, you can go for National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 5 Training and Certificate for ‘Foreman’, ‘Farm Workshop Foreman/ Supervisor’, ‘Foreman Erection’, ‘Foreman Fabrication’, ‘Foreman - Facade Installation’, ‘Foreman - False Ceiling and Dry wall Installer’, ‘Foreman Formwork’, ‘Foreman Reinforcement’, ‘Foreman Wet Finishing Flooring’ or similar courses. COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Construction Foreman

Construction Foremen are usually senior workers who are in charge of a construction crew at a construction site. They might work under a business owner, general contractor, or general manager. They might be involved in recruiting and training the work crews, assigning duties, monitoring the progress of a project with respect to timelines and budget.

You can start as a Foreman / General Foreman initially and then grow through roles like Staff supervisor & Line Planner, Production Supervisor, Senior Civil Foreman, Production Planning – Senior Executive, Product Processor, Quality Expert, Assembly Supervisor, F&B (Food and Beverage) Supervisor etc.

Salary Offered  

1. You should have interests for Enterprising Occupations. Enterprising occupations involve taking initiatives, initiating actions, and planning to achieve goals, often business goals. Senior Level: From 10 to 25+ years of work experience (there could be exceptions in some high-end technical, financial, engineering, creative, management, sports, and other careers; also in the near future, people will reach these levels much faster in many careers and in some careers, these levels will have no meaning as those careers will be completely tech skill driven such as even now, there is almost no level in a Cyber Security Expert’s job).

Future Prospects 

The future for this pathway looks moderately bright. In India, the Construction industry is expected to reach 1 trillion US Dollars by 2030. It is also estimated that this industry will contribute around 13% to the country’s GDP by 2025. India is expected to be ranked at 5th position in the list of largest manufacturing countries in the world by 2020. The Manufacturing sector in India has the potential to touch the mark of 1 trillion US Dollars by 2025.

By 2022, India is predicted to reach the ambitious goal of doubled farmer family income. According to the Union Budget 2019-20, an allocation of around 485 million US Dollars has been made to the Agriculture and Allied Industries sector under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY). The Auto-Components industry in India is expected to witness a turnover of 100 billion US Dollars by 2020. Turnover of Capital Goods industry is forecasted to reach 115 billion US Dollars by 2025. The Gems and Jewelry sector in India is expected to generate around 8.23 million jobs by 2022. The Facilities Management market in India is predicted to grow at 17 per cent CAGR (Compounded Annual Growth Rate) in the period 2015 – 2020.
