About Career 

1. As a Travel Agent, you will plan and organize tours of individuals, couples, families, business executives and others for leisure travel, business travel, pilgrimage, and other purposes. You will plan and organize travel for spending holidays, for business, for visiting holy places, for meetings, incentive tours, conventions, and exhibitions as well as for many other reasons.

2. You will book and purchase tickets for transportation (by air, railways, buses, cars, tramways, ships, etc.) on behalf of your individual, couple, family or business clients. You will reserve and book accommodations of your clients in their destinations of travel in hotels, resorts, guest houses, homestays, and other similar facilities. You may work for destinations within your country or in other countries.

3. You may also offer myriad other services to your clients such as helping them to get VISAs for visiting a foreign country, helping them to get medical insurances, helping them to exchange Indian currencies into other currencies, helping them to get a mobile connection in foreign countries, and so on.

4. You will often calculate the cost of travel and discuss with your client or you will offer all reservations and bookings as per the budget is given by the clients.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

As a Travel Agent, you will:

1. Book and purchase tickets for your clients for traveling by airplanes, trains, cruises (ships), buses, cars, trams and other types of transportation.

2. You will book and purchase tickets for both intercity destinations (that is between one city and another) as well as for intra-city destinations (that is traveling between one location in a city to another).

3. You will reserve and book accommodation for stay, meeting rooms, conference halls, exhibition centers, etc.

4. You will reserve and book various leisure and entertainment facilities for your clients such as a visit to Disneyland or other amusement parks, water cruise on a river, opera houses, museums, and various other centers of attraction in a travel destination.

5. Inform and advise clients on the various aspects of travel such as weather conditions, culture, customs, etc. of the travel destinations.

6. You will organize to get VISAs or travel permits for your clients.

7. You will help your clients to get medical insurances.

8. You will help and assist clients in emergency situations while they travel. For example, if any booked accommodation is not available for a certain reason, you will book alternative accommodation.

9. Helping travelers by sorting through vast amounts of information for finding the best possible travel arrangements.

10. Providing advice on destinations, plan trip itineraries, and making travel arrangements for clients.

11. You may visit hotels, resorts, and restaurants to evaluate the comfort, cleanliness, and quality of the establishment.

12. Collecting payment for transportation and accommodations from customer.

After class 10, you can obtain an NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 4 qualification in Travel and Tour Assistant.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with English & any other subject as per scheme of studies – Obtain Diploma / Professional Diploma in Travel & Tourism or in a similar field – Obtain minimum 3 years of work experience – Obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification in Travel Consultant or Travel Agent

After class 12 and after obtaining Diploma / Professional Diploma in Travel & Tourism or in a similar field along with minimum 3 years of work experience as Visa Assistance Consultant or Travel Insurance Executive, you can obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification in Travel Consultant or Travel Agent.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with English & any other subject as per scheme of studies – Obtain Diploma / Professional Diploma in Travel & Tourism or in a similar field – Obtain work experience – Obtain an NSQF Level 6 qualification in Tour Manager

After class 12 and after obtaining Diploma / Professional Diploma in Travel & Tourism or in a similar field along with 4 years as Travel Consultant or 3 years as Meeting, Conference and Event Planner, you can obtain an NSQF Level 6 qualification in Tour Manager.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with English & any other subject as per scheme of studies – Apply for Certificate in Travel and Tourism

After class 12, you can apply for B.Voc. (Bachelor of Vocation) in Tourism from any vocational institute or other similar institutes. This graduate level program is 3 years of duration.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with English & any other subject as per scheme of studies – Apply for Diploma in Travel and Tourism Management or Diploma in Travel and Tourism

After class 12, you can apply for B.Voc. (Bachelor of Vocation) in Tourism from any vocational institute or other similar institutes. This graduate level program is 3 years of duration.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

If you are not much inclined to higher education, then after completing class 10, you may obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification in Travel and Tour Assistant.

If you have completed your class12, then you may;

1. Obtain Diploma / Professional Diploma in Travel & Tourism or in a similar field along with minimum 3 years of work experience and then either obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification in Travel Consultant / Travel Agent or NSQF Level 6 qualification in Tour Manager.

2. Enroll for Certificate in Travel and Tourism / B.Voc. (Bachelor of Vocation) in Tourism / Diploma in Travel and Tourism Management or Diploma in Travel and Tourism.

1. At the beginning of your career, you may earn about Rs. 8,000 – 12,000 per month.

2. With 3-5 years of experience, you may earn about Rs. 12,000-15,000 or even more per month.

3. With 8-10 years of experience, you may earn about Rs. 20,000 – 40,000 or even more per month.

4. With 12-15 years of experience, you may earn about Rs. 25,000 – 70,000 or even more per month.

5. You may also start your own travel agency busy and earn in lakhs.

Future Prospects 

Travel and Tourism is one of the world’s largest foreign exchange earner among industries, provides employment directly to millions of people worldwide and indirectly through many associated service industries. As per the report by IBEF (Indian Brand Equity Framework), the Travel and Tourism Sector is expected to grow by 2% per annum to 52.3 million jobs. The figure shows that there will be plenty of job opportunities in the travel agency sector.
