About Career
1. An individual is called a “tourist” when one travels to a new place for recreational and leisure purposes. People have various intentions of travelling such as for relaxation, leisure, business, adventure, religion, heritage, nature, expanding their knowledge, rediscovering history or even learning a new art form.
2. There are various types of travel and tourism professionals in this industry. Some of the roles include that of Travel Advisor/Consultants, Ticketing and Reservation Executives/Managers and Travel and Tour Managers.
3. Travel Advisor / Consultants are professionals who help individuals and groups of individuals plan their destination of visit based on their preferences and assist them in doing all their bookings and reservations.
4. Ticketing and Reservation Executives/Managers help individuals, groups of individuals as well as organizations to book all kinds of tickets right from railways and airlines to buses, tramways, cabs, and other public transport facilities. Apart from that, they also help reserve and book accommodation at hotels, resorts and other places. As a ticketing and reservation executive/manager, you will also help your clients book their tickets at amusement parks, musicals, museums, sports matches and other such types of events/activities.
5. Travel and Tour Managers accompany business and leisure travellers on tours. They take care of all necessary services on these trips such as helping in checking in hotels, visiting places of tourist attractions, assisting with finding restaurants and getting tickets to various facilities.
Key roles and responsibilities
Following will be your key roles as responsibilities as a travel and tourism professional:
1. Research various destinations and means of travel regarding prices, customs, weather conditions, reviews etc. as a travel advisor/ travel consultant.
2. Drafting and designing brochures and itineraries for various destinations and trips based on popular trends. If you work as a consultant for tour operators or run your own tourism agency business, you can create customized itineraries for as per people's’ choice of destination, area of interest, duration and budget.
3. Following up with potential clients, taking their suggestions and interests and planning a trip for them based on their preferences. You will also provide your services with booking accommodation and transport, booking flight/train tickets and rental transportation at their holiday destination.
4. Providing additional helpful travel material such as maps, tour guide contact details, and brochures with local traditions and cultural activities.
5. Helping clients with reservations for tickets (flights, trains, buses, etc.), accommodation and tourist attractions such as amusement parks, sports events, museums and other activities popular in that city/country that the traveller wishes to go for. These are some of the responsibilities as a Ticketing and Reservation Executive/Manager.
6. Accompanying groups travelling by coach, or in some cases by car, boat, train or plane as a tour manager or welcoming them at the starting point of their trip and announcing details of the travel arrangements.
7. Assisting the travellers in settling into their accommodation and making sure all travel arrangements run according to plan and that accommodation, meals and service are satisfactory.
8. Being equipped to deal with emergencies such as degrading health of a traveller or other situations such as loss of luggage.
9. Advising travellers about nearby facilities such as sights, restaurants and shops, at each destination.

Work Environment
As a travel consultant and a ticketing and reservations executive/manager, most of your working hours are spent indoors in offices, in front of a computer, consulting with clients, making travel arrangements, doing paperwork, and talking on the phone.
As a tour manager, you will be visiting different places as per the itinerary of your group. You will have early mornings and late nights, and you will mostly have to be on your feet the entire day. You will also be required to have a good amount of information about the city/country you will be operating in. An interesting aspect of the job is that different tours will bring you to interact with people from all over the world and make sure they have a good time. You will also have the opportunity to visit new places based on the itinerary you are working.
Specialisation Tracks In This Career
1. Experience Architect
An Experience Architect is someone who designs and creates an experience, especially for people with specific fields of interests. It also requires a cross-discipline perspective that considers multiple aspects in order to be able to merge interests. For example, you will create experiences such as a tour of a village of aboriginal people to help tourist experience their ways of life, their culture, how they make their livelihood, or a tour of the old heritage buildings in a city, taste authentic cuisine in the old areas of a city.
2. MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) Consultant
A MICE Consultant is required to facilitate the travel needs of this corporate travel companies' clients. As a consultant, you will offer the most convenient and cost-effective options to meet their travel requirements. This role will include sourcing and booking conference facilities, transfers and accommodation.
3. Leisure and Recreation Specialist
As a Leisure and Recreation Specialist, you can organise your activities in various places such as playgrounds, parks, and camps. Your job functions will include planning, organizing, and leading activities for groups of people (business groups, senior citizens, large families, etc.). These activities can be related to arts and crafts, sports, music and even adventure activities.
4. Eco-Tourism Consultant
Eco-tourism is about promoting a responsible and sustainable way of travelling. As a consultant, your duties include educating travellers about the importance of ecotourism, organizing and arranging tours (wildlife tours, village walks, etc.) and making other arrangements such as transport and accommodation.
6. Ticketing and Reservation Professional
As a Ticketing and Reservation travel professional, your job includes planning routes and providing travel and accommodations options as per your client’s budget, and making bookings for the same accordingly. This will consist of reservations for stays, transportation, restaurants, museums, monumental/historical sites etc.
7. Tour Manager
As a tour manager, you will be in charge of individuals and groups of people travelling on the same itinerary. You will welcome them on arrival, help them settle into their stays, give them recommendations for meals or shopping or site-seeing that isn’t on the itinerary, make sure each day of the trip goes as planned and that all the travellers have a satisfactory experience on their journey.
8. Travel Destination Consultant
When a travel destination consultant makes recommendations, it is done so by keeping in mind the tastes and preferences of the clients. This can include preferences in the landscape, weather conditions, cultural events, history and other such factors. For example, if the client wishes to go scuba diving, you as a travel consultant will come up with the best possible options for the client.
Career Growth
1. If you start working as a Trainee Travel Consultant, after a few years of experience, you can get promoted to a Travel Executive. After that, you can further get promoted to the post of a Training Manager or a Senior Travel Executive and further as a Travel Chief Manager.
2. If you start working as a Ticketing and Reservation Executive/Manager, you can first start as a Ticketing and Reservation Executive. After gaining a few years of experience, you can get promoted to the position of an Account Manager, and then to the position of a Division Manager.
3. If you wish to work as a Tour Manager, you still first start by working as an Operations Assistant or an Assistant Tour Manager. Once you gain some experience, you can further work as a Tour Manager. After having enough experience behind you, you can also work as a Training Manager or as a Regional Tour Manager of the company.

1. As a trainee, you can earn a starting salary of Rs. 12,500 - 30,000 per month. As a travel executive, you can earn Rs. 30,000 - 42,000 per month. When you start working as a Senior Travel Executive/Consultant, you can earn a salary of Rs. 40,000 - 75,000 per month.
2. As a Ticketing and Reservation Executive, you can earn a starting salary of Rs. 15,000 - 22,000 per month. As a Division Manager, you can earn a salary of Rs. 25,000 - 40,000 per month.
3. As an Operations Assistant or Assistant Tour Manager, you can get a starting salary of Rs. 15,000 - 20,000 per month. As a tour manager, you can earn Rs. 20,000 - 45,000 per month.
