About Career 

1. As a Pet Walker, you will be working as a professional who is responsible for taking a dog such as German Shepherd, Pug, Greyhound, Cocker Spaniel, Doberman, Bullmastiff, etc. or a pet for a walk, usually from the pet’s or dog’s home and then returning the pet or dog to its home. The length of the walk, as well as the time duration of an exercise session, might vary as per the breed of dog or type of pet.

2. You will not only take the pets or dogs out for a walk but will also help them in sitting. You will be offering various types of exercises such as jogging, running, inline skating, or dog scootering for dogs or pets during pet or dog walking sessions. As a professional Pet Walker, you may take many pets (of same type or breed) at once.

Key Roles And Responsibilities

As a Pet Walker, you will be performing all or some of the following roles and responsibilities:

1. Ensure security of pets while picking up and dropping off pets from their homes.

2. Providing breaks to pets or dogs during walking and exercises.

3. You will be training the pets or dogs.

4. You will be monitoring the health or behavior of the pet or dogs.

5. You will be taking first aid kit along with you for pet’s safety and security.

6. You must have the ability and competency to control dogs or pets of various sizes.

Class 8 in school – Obtain Pet Walking or Sitting training from a training center or institute

After your Class 8 in school, you can get training from any pet care institutes/centers like Positive Canines, Cochin Dog Training Academy and Pet Resort, BHARCS, Anvis Inc. etc. This training is usually for 15 days/ 2 months/ 3 months.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

After class 8 in school, you can take training in Pet Walker and then you will be either hired by a pet owner or you can work independently.

Competencies Required

1. Realistic - You should have interests for Realistic Occupations. Realistic occupations involve more practical and hands-on activities than paperwork or office work. Realistic occupations often involve physical activities for getting things done using various tools and equipment. 

2. Conventional - You should have interests for Conventional Occupations. Conventional occupations involve repetitive and routine tasks as well as fixed processes or procedures for getting things done. These occupations involve working more with data, systems, and procedures and less with ideas or creativity.

3. Animal Care - Knowledge about how to take care of animals and cater to different needs for both domestic and farm animals. This includes knowledge about animal breeding, raring, raising, basic healthcare and grooming.

4. Customer Service - Knowledge about how to provide customer services. This includes understanding customer needs, helping customers to use products and services, answering customer queries, handling customer complaints and grievances, and evaluating customer satisfaction.

5. Service Orientation - Skills in or a keen interest to help and assist people.

6. Active Listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, understanding the points being made by others, asking questions, etc.

7. Coordination - Skills in working together with other people to get things done.

8. Problem Solving - Skills in analysis and understanding of problems, evaluating various options to solve the problems and using the best option to solve the problems.

9. Near Vision - The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).

Career - Job Opportunities & Profiles 

After training in pet walking, you may get a job as a pet walker or sitter. You may either work independently by starting your center or you may be hired by some pet owners by some reference. There are many centers also like: Positive Canines, Cochin Dog Training Academy and Pet Resort, BHARCS, Anvis Inc.


      




Specialisation Tracks In This Career

Pet Sitter

As a pet sitter, you will be taking care of pets in its own house while the pet owner is away from such as when they go on a vacation, travel for business, etc. You will be feeding, changing their water bowls, provide exercise and walking sessions, administer pet medications, etc.

Career Growth

As a pet walker, you can only be promoted if you switch career to pet grooming by obtaining training in pet grooming. The best option for you will be to become an independent Pet Walker/Sitter or having your own pet care center.

Salary Offered  

1. At the beginning of your career, you may expect to get about Rs. 4,000-7,000 per month.

2. After 2-5 years of experience, you may get about Rs. 8,000-12,000 a month.

3. After 6-10 years of experience, you may get about Rs. 10,000-18,000 a month.

1. Assisting and caring for animals / Pets - Taking care of animals or pets in different situations and settings.

2. Providing advice and consultation to others - Giving advice or consultation to others about various issues, conceptual matters, know-how, scientific matters, products or services.

3. Scheduling tasks - Scheduling project timelines, tasks and activities.

4. Performing physical activities - Performing physical activities that require the use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

Future Prospects 

With increasing household incomes of Indian middle class and upper middle class, more and more people are keeping pets at their homes. This is an urban trend and it is also catching up in smaller cities and towns. So, the opportunities for jobs are going to be many.
