About Career
As a Housekeeping Assistant, you will be involved in a range of housekeeping activities at hotels, resorts, guest houses, serviced apartments, hospitals, residences of wealthy people, offices, shopping complexes and other facilities which are used by a large number of people.
Housekeeping activities entail – cleaning rooms, arranging beds, changing linens, dusting of furniture, curtains and carpets; organizing various materials at rooms such as arranging flowers in the flower vases, arranging items on writing tables; cleaning floors, living areas, kitchen and other areas; cleaning toilets, cleaning floors, sweeping gardens, and so on. In some facilities, you will also do the laundry using washing machines.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
As a Housekeeping Assistant, you will be performing all or some of the following roles and responsibilities:
1. Need to sweep, scrub, and mop floors of the rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, elevators, etc.
2. Need to empty and clean trash containers and then dispose of the trash in a sanitary manner.
3. You will be changing linen and making beds on a daily basis along with tidying up bedrooms and living rooms.
4. Need to clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies by using vacuum cleaners and shampooers.
5. You will be doing dusting and polishing of furniture.
6. Ensure cleaning of wash basins, mirrors, tubs and showers and wiping down glass surfaces is properly done.
7. You will be replenishing supplies, such as linens and bathroom items.
8. Need to operate mechanized cleaning equipment and maintain all cleaning equipment and materials in a safe and sanitary working condition.

Career Entry Pathway
Class 5 in school – Obtain NSQF Level 2 Qualification in Housekeeping Assistant (Manual Cleaning)
After class 5 in school, you can obtain NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 2 Qualification in Housekeeping Assistant (Manual Cleaning) from any vocational institute or other similar institutes.
Class 5 in school – Obtain an NSQF Level 3 Qualification in Hospitality Assistant – Work opportunities as Housekeeping Assistants/Attendants
After class 5 in school and attaining at least 14 years of age, you can undertake a training program for 520 hours in an ITI or other vocational institutions approved by NCVT (National Council of Vocational Education) in the trade of Hospitality Assistant.
Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with English Core & any subject combination as per scheme of studies – Apply for Diploma in Housekeeping Operations – Work opportunities as Housekeeping Assistants/Attendants
After completing class 12 in any stream with English Core, you can apply for Diploma in Housekeeping Operations from any vocational institution or other similar institutions.
Class 8 in school - Obtain an NSQF Level 2 Qualification in Housekeeping Attendant / Obtain an NSQF Level 3 Qualification in Hospitality Assistant – Work for 2 years as a Housekeeping Attendant – Obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification in Room Attendant – Work opportunities
After completing class 8 in school and obtaining NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 2 qualification in Housekeeping Attendant or NSQF Level 3 qualification in Hospitality Attendant, you need to have work experience of 2 years as a Housekeeping Attendant before obtaining NSQF Level 4 qualification in Room Attendant.
Required Qualification & Competencies
After completing class 5 in school, you may obtain:
1. NSQF Level 2 Qualification in Housekeeping Assistant (Manual Cleaning)
2. NSQF Level 3 Qualification in Hospitality Assistant
3. After completing class 8 in school and obtaining NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 2 qualification in Housekeeping Attendant or NSQF Level 3 qualification in Hospitality Attendant, you need to have work experience of 2 years as a Housekeeping Attendant before obtaining NSQF Level 4 qualification in Room Attendant.
4. However, after class 11-12 with English Core & any other subject as per scheme of studies, you can apply for Diploma in Housekeeping Operations.

From a Housekeeping Assistant / Attendant or similar work opportunities, you may grow become Room Attendant, Floor Supervisor (Housekeeping), Housekeeping Supervisor, etc. But for senior-level jobs, you will need higher qualifications such as NSQF Level 5/6/7 or Post Higher Secondary Diploma in Hotel Management / Bachelor’s degree in Hotel Management.
