About Career 

1. As a Tailor, you will be involved in cutting, mending, and sewing any type of fabric for ladies/kids/gents wear like suits, jackets, uniforms, and coats by taking appropriate body measurements. You should be able to perform basic cutting and stitching operations for developing products of different designs as per quality standards.

2. You will identify, select, and make hand stitches in a given fabric by selecting different types of patterns. You will need a thorough knowledge of measurements, sampling, fabric styles, apparel production processes, and sewing fabrics with different materials and trims.

3. You will be able to stitch seams with pleats, sleeves, hem, frills, pockets, necklines, collars, cuffs, etc. You may also be involved in alteration works of stitched dress materials to fix and fit them according to customer requirements. You may also specialize in making customized Indian dresses only for various Indian apparel sector companies, fashion designers, or tailoring workshops. You may also specialize in global or Western outfits.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

As a Tailor, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities: -  

1. Fitting, altering, repairing, and making clothing as per customers' and clothing manufacturers' specifications and descriptions, after applying principles of garment design, styling, and construction.

2. Cutting and sewing fabric for making garments, using needles, scissors, thread, and sewing machines.

3. Recording customer’s measurements using simple hand tools.

4. Assembling all the cuttings and joining them with basting stitches, using needles and thread or sewing machines to make the final outfit.

5. Sewing buttonholes, attaching buttons, putting in padding, and shaping materials to finish garments.

6. Fitting and studying already stitched garments for determining necessary alterations that may be required.

7. Removing stitches or trimming excess material from apparel to be altered by using rippers, scissors, or razor blades.

8. Working on the hems for shortening or lengthening garment parts such as sleeves.

9. Recording and documenting all the required alterations and instructions on tags and then attaching them to the apparel.

10. Pressing or ironing garments, using hand irons or pressing machines.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 8 in school – NSQF Level 2 Training and Certificate for ‘Heavy Duty Tailor’ or similar courses.

After completing Class 8 in school, you need to undergo National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 2 Training and Certificate for ‘Heavy Duty Tailor’ or similar courses. The total hours of training will be 300.

After completing Class 8 in school, you need to undergo National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 3 Training and Certificate for ‘Cutting & Sewing’, ‘Crochet Lace Tailor’, or similar courses. The total hours of training will be 300-2080.

After completing Class 8 in school, you can enroll for Skill Development Initiative Scheme (SDIS) courses for ‘Tailor (Basic Sewing Operator)’. The total hours of training will be 200-2000.

After Class 10, you need to undergo training at Industrial Training Institute (ITI), National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Regional Vocational Training Institute (RVTI), National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Industrial Training Center (ITC). After completing this training, you will sit for the All India Trade Test (AITT) and you will get a National Trade Certificate (NTC) if you pass.

After Class 10, you need to undergo National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 4 Training and Certificate for ‘Tailor’, ‘Self Employed Tailor’, ‘Sampling Tailor’, or similar courses. The total hours of training will be 500-2080.

After Class 10, you can obtain a National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) for ‘Tailor (General)’, ‘Designer and Master Cutter’, ‘Dress Maker’, ‘Embroidery and Needle Worker’, ‘Computer Aided Embroidery and Needle Worker’ or related trades in the ‘Cutting and Tailoring Trades Group’ after completing Apprenticeship training. Apprenticeship training will be for 1-2 years.

After Class 8, you can go for:

2. MES courses.


After Class 10, you can go for:

1. ITI training courses.

2. NSQF Level 4 training courses.

3. NAC training and certification courses.

These occupations involve abstract or conceptual thinking, and creative self-expression and often do not follow any set processes or rules for getting things done.

4. You should know Creative Design - Knowledge of various techniques, methods, and specifications for creating and developing designs for various products and materials such as textiles, clothes, accessories, etc.

5. You should have Active Listening Skills- Giving full attention to what other people are saying, understanding the points being made by others, asking questions, etc.

6. You should have Time Management Skills - prioritizing work and managing time effectively.

7. You should have Finger Dexterity - The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.

8. You should have Arm-Hand Steadiness - The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.

9. You should have a Visualization Ability - to imagine how something will look after it is moved around or when its parts are moved or rearranged.

10. You are always or mostly careful about your actions and behavior.

1. In entry-level jobs: You may get about Rs. 3,000 – Rs. 10,000 or more per month.

2. Salaries increase with your work experience and as you get promoted.

4. After having 6-12 years of experience, you may get about Rs. 12,000 – Rs. 25,000 or more per month.

1. The future of this pathway seems satisfying. India is the largest exporter of yarn in the global market.

2. Textile and Apparel exports from India are expected to reach around 82 billion US Dollars. This sector is predicted to experience a shift to an organized from an unorganized market model. Many small clusters of Handicrafts and Handlooms are being developed with the support of private traders/entrepreneurs.
