About Career
1. A food and beverage assistant specialise in the work related to proper compliance of food safety, handling storage, preparation and sanitation. As a food and beverage assistant, you may also be working with different food vendors, food purchase department and also associated with all kinds of non-alcoholic beverages.
2. As a food and beverage assistant, you will be working in different kinds of establishments like hotels, restaurants, bars, resorts, cafes, caterers, cruise ships, event planners, etc. where food and drinks are served to clients or guests. As a food and beverage assistant, you may also be required to put your services for sports centers, commercial kitchens, etc. You not only take care of food and quality, but you may also be involved in scheduling staff (waiters, stewards, etc.). You work with your supervisor to ensure total compliance of all kinds of rules and regulations. You assist kitchen staff and waiters, i.e. both side of the servicing.
3. Some of Food and Beverage Assistants may also become a steward. As a steward, you will be assisting kitchen staff in cleaning utensils (both kitchen and used by customers). You will also do an everyday job in the kitchen. You will keep the kitchen clean and refill all cleaning supplies. You will be required to take out trash from the kitchen.
Key roles and responsibilities
As a food and beverage assistant, you would have the following roles and responsibilities:
1. You will be responsible for wiping tables, seats, with clean clothes and then with cleaning agents. You will also replace dirty tablecloths.
2. You will set tables with linen, condiments, silverware, etc.
3. You will keep a track on the food items requested by customers.
4. You will be responsible for scraping and stacking dirty dishes and tableware. You will carry dirty tableware and dishes to the kitchen for cleaning.
5. You will be responsible for performing several duties like serving food, cleaning, stocking in restaurants, dining rooms, cafeterias, etc.

Work Environment
1. As a Food and Beverage Service worker, you will be working in more of the most demanding service industries. Although most of the restaurants and cafes have 8-9 hours of working, you will be working in a highly demanding time in the evening when there will tell be a lot of people visiting and ordering food. As it is a service industry, you would be expected to maintain a high standard of service. Many times, you will be working late in the evening especially during the weekend.
2. If you are working on a cruise, then for many days you would be far from the land in the water. It can be a challenging role in adapting to a new environment is not easy. In any case, people will expect you to be nice, soft and polite.

1. Steward
Steward (commonly known as a waiter) is a specialised worker in restaurants, cafes, cruise, etc. who serves food. The role of a steward is to serve food and beverage to clients, customers and guest at hotels, dining halls, banquet halls, etc. As a steward, you will greet your guest, help them in finding a seat (table), providing them with the menu, taking their order, taking care of any special requirement, serving food, providing all tableware, etc.
2. Guest Service Assistant (Food & Beverage Service)
Guest Service Assistant is specialise mostly working in hotels and cruise who serves customers in their room or around the pool or public area but not a restaurant.
3. Bartender
The bartender is a specialist worming in pubs, hotels and restaurants that serve alcohol. A bartender is a person who mixes different kinds of alcohol to create cocktails, mocktails and serves them to customers.
4. Kitchen Assistant
Kitchen Assistant is a specialist who works in the kitchen area of cafes, cruise, dining hall, restaurant, hotel, etc. to ensure the kitchen is operational and clean. Some of you may also be assisting chefs in preparing the basic material for the food. However, most of you will be involved in keeping the kitchen clean, washing utensils and dishes, sorting and storing ingredients, washing, peeling, cutting vegetables, and fruits, disposing of rubbishes and waste and organizing linen laundry.
Career Growth
1. If you start your career as a steward, then you will become a Caption and then Senior Captain. Finally, you may become a Food & Beverage Supervisor and then Manager.
2. If you start your career as a bartender, then you will become a senior bartender and then bar supervisor and then finally bar manager.
Salary Offered
1. At the start of your career you will be earning anything between Rs. 8,000 to 15,000 per month. A bartender with skills might be earning on the higher side.
2. At the junior level with a work experience of 2-6 years, you would be earning anything between 15,000 INR to 25,000 per month. A bartender with skills might be earning on the higher side.
3. At the middle level with an experience of 10-12 years, you would be earning anything between Rs. 25,000 to 50,000 per month. A bartender with skills might be earning on the higher side.
4. At the senior level of over 15 years of work experience, you would be earning anything between Rs. 40,000 to 70,000 per month. A bartender with skills might be earning on the higher side.

Future Prospects
The Indian restaurant industry is worth Rs. 75,000 crores and increasing at an average rate of 7% per annum. However, the organized sector share in this space is Rs. 22,000 crores and this sector are growing at a higher pace of 16%. There are over 1.5 million eating outlets in the country at present with over 3000 being in the organized sector comprising of cafes, pubs, restaurants from brands like McDonalds, CCD, Dominos, Pizza Hut, Hard Rock Café, KFC, etc. At present on average an India eats out around 2 times per month as compared to 40 times in Singapore. Thus, with the growth rate, Indian will start eating more and more outside their homes. This exponential rise will contribute to the high rise in jobs in this industry. The great demand for stewards, kitchen assistants will come in the near future.
