Business Manager is a person who manages various aspects of the business. As a business manager, you will be responsible for any one or more business functions of the company. These functions are marketing, sales, finance, human resource, project management, strategy, etc. You will lead one of the few of these business functions or part of the functions to ensure that the company you work for can grow and remain profitable.

As a business manager, you will make decisions that will increase the revenue of the organisation, increase sales of products and services, reduce unwanted costs. You will also provide new incentives to workers, create organisation policies, define new strategies for growth, create sales target of employees, create roles and responsibilities of employees, motivate employees, build customer relationships, listen to customer feedbacks, act on customer feedbacks, etc.

You will act as the bridge between employees, and higher authorises, shareholders of the organisation. You will make decisions in your department and ensure smooth flow of regulations. You will be accountable for the work done by employees working in your department.

Key roles and responsibilities

As a Business Manager, depending upon whether you work for large corporate conglomerates or small town financial institutions, your duties and responsibilities will vary.

1. As a Business Manager, you might be responsible for the overall management of the organisation. In such a case, you would take daily reports from different departments; you will work on monthly, quarterly, yearly growth strategies of each department. You will review financial statements, sales or activity reports, or other performance data to measure productivity or goal achievement or to identify areas needing cost reduction or program improvement. You will face investors, partners, shareholders and provide them with a detailed report of the previous year and upcoming projections.  You will direct and coordinate activities of businesses or departments concerned with the production, pricing, sales, or distribution of products.

2. If you are working in the Human Resource Department, then you will be responsible for hiring talented people for the organisation. You will coordinate with each department to find its requirement. You will visit different Business schools to hire candidates. You will also coordinate with hiring agencies. You will prepare staff work schedules and assign specific duties. You will create a JD (Job description) for each job. You will maintain all employee’s data, salary data, documentation etc. You will be responsible for employees, salaries, daily working hours, biometric data, holidays, leaves, etc.

3. If you are working as a Marketing Manager, then you will be responsible for all the activities related to marketing. You will research the market to find the demand for products or services. You will coordinate with the Advertising team, branding team, sales team and finance team for smooth creation of promotions, advertisements, etc. You will create marketing strategies and allocate funds to different advertisements, events, collaborations, etc.

4. If you are working as a Finance Manager, then you will be responsible for all the money that comes into the organisation and goes out. You will prepare Profit and Loss sheet, expenditure sheets, Balance Sheets, etc. You will approve the budget for any campaign, product development, marketing, Human Resource etc. You will also let shareholders know the financial stability of the organisation. If the organisation makes money, you will alert all managers. You will evaluate the financial aspects of product development, such as budgets, expenditures, research and development appropriations, or return-on-investment and profit-loss projections.

5. If you are working as a Supply Chain Manager Monitor suppliers to ensure that they efficiently and effectively provide needed goods or services within budgetary limits.

6. If you are working in the Sales department, then you will manage business growth through identification of new market segments for achieving targets. Like iPhone identified Indian market and launched Oppo phones here. You will conduct a competitor analysis to keep abreast of the current market trend. You will interact with clients to understand their needs and cultivate customer relations. You will ensure that the product or service is available at all distribution channel.

7. If you are working in the International Business department, you will be responsible for identifying new markets. Like Jio might work to understand which new country they can enter. You will be responsible for finding a suitable strategy to enter a new market. Like McDonalds entered into though Franchising (Where a local India partner took a franchise of McDonalds in India. McDonalds do not own restaurants in India).

8. If you are working in the Business Development department, you will be responsible for increasing the business of the origination through new and existing customers. You will create new avenues of business and then let the sales team make the sales.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 with any subject combination as per scheme of studies – UG in any discipline – work in the industry for 2-5 years – PG in Business Administration / Finance / Marketing / Human Resource Management / Business Management / Foreign Trade / Operations Management / Information Technology / Hotel Management / and related subjects.

After your Class 11-12 with any subject combination as per scheme of studies in your higher secondary school and then study for an undergraduate degree in any discipline and then work in the industry for a few years. Now, you can join an Executive Master’s course in Business Administration / Finance / Marketing / Human Resource Management / Business Management / Foreign Trade / Operations Management / Information Technology / Hotel Management / and related subjects.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

Undergraduate studies after school:

1. To become a Business Manager, you can take multiple pathways. You can study Business Management Business Administration in under graduation as B.B.A. or B.B.M.

2. You can also study Engineering by taking a course in B.E. or B.Tech.

3. Alternatively, you can study Economics with any other subjects in B.Com.

4. You can also study Science, Commerce and Arts with any subjects in under graduation.

Post Graduate studies:

1. Work Environment

As a manager, you will have a job of responsibility. Thus, even though most of the jobs are 8 hours per day, you might be expected to work late nights, especially while working on new project, the closing of quarters, new project launch, etc. You might work under pressure during the new launch of products or services. Finance managers are under a lot of work lad around the end of the financial year. Most of the job in the office, however, advertising managers might have to travel to shooting locations. Also, sales manager jobs are also requiring a field visit. They may be required to visit remote places to ensure regular supply of products and services. Operations managers might be required to work in the production site.

General & Strategic Manager

General & Strategic Manager is responsible for the day to day affair of the business. They decide strategies to increase the profitability of the company by reducing costs and increasing new ways to increase revenues. They are responsible for the overall management of the company.

Advertising & Brand Manager

Advertising & Brand Managers are responsible for all advertising and branding related work. They decide where to advertise (like TV, FM, Social Media or Newspaper), then they decide which channel to pick (like which newspaper, which TV Channel, which Radio channel), they decide how much funds required for each channel), etc. They also work on what kind of advertisement to make. So, what you see about a Samsung or Oppo Mobile on TV, Facebook, Instagram or Newspaper, these people are behind that.

Marketing Manager

Marketing Managers are responsible for creating strategies, planning for products or services, advertising, sales, promotions etc. While advertising manager creates the advertisement, they create the strategy behind the advertisement and all kinds of promotions. All sales, discounts, offers, lucky winner contests, promotions, collaboration with Sports stars etc., are their brainchild in the organisation.

Project Manager

A project is normally a temporary work that has certain desired goals. A project manager is responsible for creating the scope of the project, doing its feasibility test, executing it, managing resources for the project, managing its cost and delivering it as desired. Like for Larson & Turbo, building a hospital is one project. Once it is finished, the team moves to build the next hospital or road or buildings.

Sales Manager

Sales Manager are responsible for all the sales generated in the organisation. They create a distribution channel, make sure that product or services are there on each distribution channel, gives incentives to shoppers for making most sales, understand the market and give input to marketing and strategic team. They are the most important managers as they ensure the organisation makes profit or loss.

Digital Marketing Manager

Digital Marketing Managers work primarily on the marketing of products and services through the internet, mobile and digital medium. They understand the search engine optimisation (meaning what people search on the internet and how their product can be the first thing that people see when they search on the internet). They manage content marketing, social media marketing (Advertisements, promotions, etc. on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), etc. They give a budget for each of these marketing campaigns.

Finance Manager

Finance Managers works to increase the wealth of the organisation, do research and find ways to obtain assets for funding in the organisation. IF the organisation needs money, they will be responsible for obtaining that money from the market; they keep track of all the money that comes in and goes out. They prepare all financial sheets, budgets, etc.

Human Resources Manager

Human Resource Managers manage the human resource of the organisation. Human resources mean all the people working permanently or part-time in the organization. From an office assistant to CEO, each one of them is part of human resources. They ensure employees have professional conduct in the organisation as they take care of their interests. Human Resources Managers recruit, select, induct, and place people in the company. They plan and disburse compensation and benefits; they measure performance; they develop and organise training programs; they plan and manage career progression, career transition and succession; manage quality of work life; manage all exits from the company.

Operations Manager

Operations Manager manages the process of production and distribution of good or services in the organisation. They ensure that the organisation is efficient in using the least of the resources (human, money or articles) and effective in meeting the customer requirement. They plan, organise and supervise the production, manufacturing or developing products and services. They manage the whole process of turning the inputs (raw material, labour, energy, etc.) into the final output.

Information Technology Manager

Information Technology Managers all the information technology resources of the organisation. They are responsible for the website, its maintenance, internal security of organisation network, securing emails, connecting all systems, procuring hardware and software as required. They also manage all internal data.


CAREER GROWTH

As a Business Manager, at most of the places in most of the departments, you will start as an executive or assistant manager or management trainee. You might work on this role for six months to 2 years. With the right career growth, you might be soon become a Manager and then Senior Manager and then with 10-12 years, you may become Regional Manager, Area Manager or a Vice President.

Salary Offered  

1. At the entry level, you will join as an assistant manager and will earn anything between Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 3,00,000. Most of IIM graduates earn on the higher side.

2. At the junior level after 2-5 years of experience, you will be earning anywhere between Rs. 25,000 – 5,00,000 per month.

3. At the middle level of 5-10 years of work experience, your earning will rise to Rs. 40,000-10,00,000 per month.

4. At the senior level after 10 years of work experience, your earning will be between Rs. 50,000 to 25,00,000 INR per month. Few managers even earn more than that.

Future Prospects 

According to a report by Michael Page, around 66% of Indian companies hired employees in 2017. Around 45% of these jobs will be in middle management. Around 80% of employers are offering a hike of 6 to 15%. Around 80% of employers said that the hiring process is steady and will remain steady. These figures along with the high GDP growth rate of India gives a bright future for Business Managers. High GDP leads to higher consumption, leading to more business for companies. Thus, they will need more manager to manage. The job prospect is quite higher in coming years.
