About Career
As a Driver, you will be driving one or more types of automotive vehicles depending upon what kind of driving license you have. You may drive personal cars owned by your employer; drive taxis and cabs under a cab service operator or individually owned; drive auto, drive light goods carriers (small vans, pick-up trucks, etc.); drive heavy motor vehicles for goods transport (such as trucks) or heavy passenger motor vehicles (buses); heavy transport vehicles (large trucks with multiple wheels, large sized buses such as Volvo), etc.
Your tasks will vary depending upon what kind of a vehicle you are driving. If you are a driver for a personal car, your work will involve picking up and dropping your employer to a destination, keeping the car clear, checking the mechanical aspects of the car, getting the car maintained, etc. If you are a goods transport vehicle driver, you will be driving light goods carrier (like tempo vans or small trucks), trucks, etc. to load and deliver goods to different destinations. If you are a cab driver, you will be picking up and dropping passengers at different destinations.
Key Roles And Responsibilities
As a Driver, you will be performing all or some of the following roles and responsibilities:
1. You need to check that the vehicle is meeting the basic legal and compliance requirements or not.
2. You will be checking the service record of the vehicle or the immediate need for services.
3. You need to ensure that all the basic technical checks have been carried out as per the standard guidelines.
4. You will be checking the availability of fuel for the vehicle.
5. You will be collecting money from customers, making changes, and recording transactions of customer receipts.
6. You will be reporting actual or possible defects of the vehicle to the senior or service supervisor.
7. Driver trucks for delivering various types of items such as food, medical supplies, etc.
8. Maintain trucks and food-dispensing equipment and ensure that the machines that dispense food or beverages are clean.

Career Entry Pathway
Class 8 in school – Obtain training in driving from any private or government training center – Avail a Driving License
After completing class 8 in school, you need to obtain training in driving from any private or government training center. You need to be 18 years of age (minimum of 20 years in some states) before applying for a driving license. You can apply for a license either online or offline with a Regional Transport Officer at the Public Vehicle Department office of any State. Depending upon what kind of a vehicle you want, you apply for any of the following licenses: LMV (Light motor vehicles which include cars, jeeps, taxis, small delivery vans, etc.) LMV-TR (Light motor vehicles which include light goods carriers) MGV (for medium-sized goods vehicle) HMV (Heavy motor vehicles such as trucks) HGMV (Heavy good motor vehicles such as trucks having large carrying capacities such as trucks with 24/36/48 wheels) HTV or HPMV (Heavy transport vehicles or heavy passenger motor vehicles such as passenger transport buses).

1. At the beginning of your career, you may earn about Rs. 7,000 – 8,000 per month.
2. With 3-4 years of experience, you may earn about Rs. 8,000-30,000 or even more per month.
3. With 5-10 years of experience, depending upon what kind of a vehicle you are driving and the owner or company who employs you, you may earn about Rs. 12,000 – 80,000 or even more per month.
4. You can grow from a cab/taxi driver or light transport vehicle driver into heavy truck or bus drivers by acquiring requisite licenses. Earnings of truck/bus drivers or other heavy vehicle drivers are much more than the cab/taxi drivers. But this also depends upon many factors such as in which city you are driving. In Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, a cab driver can earn more than a bus driver.
5. You can also move up in terms of the kind of car you are driving. For example, if you are driving a Suzuki Wagon R, your earning will be much lesser than a driver who is driving a BMW or a Mercedes Benz. Similarly, a driver who drives a Volvo bus earns more than a driver who drives a local transport bus.

2. Working directly with people - Working directly with people to offer them products and services and assisting, etc.
3. Performing physical activities - Performing physical activities that require the use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

Future Prospects
1. As per a report of Economic Survey, the Indian Logistic market is expected to reach about USD 215 billion, at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 10.5% after the implementation of GST (Goods Service Tax).
2. The BRTS (Bus Rapid Transport Systems) is growing so rapidly in several cities of the country. It has been observed that around 90% of public transport in Indian cities has been taken up by buses and it serves as an important mode of transport.
3. The taxi industry in India has gained prominence in the past few years because of the entry of various app based aggregators. The entry of OLA and Uber has changed the market dynamics, influencing the purchasing power of the public. It is observed that the Indian taxi market is still in its growing stage, with a huge scope of growth and employment opportunities.
4. With the growth in the Logistic Market as well as with the BRTS growth, it is expected that there will be numerous job opportunities for drivers.
