Who is Eligible

Class 10th Pass


1. As a Beautician, you will provide beauty and cosmetic treatments to your customers. Your services will cover a range of beauty and cosmetic treatments such as skincare, applying facial, masks and scrubs, applying makeup, hair removal, manicure, pedicure, and bridal makeup.

2. You may also train yourself to provide advanced beauty treatments such as facial electrotherapy, laser therapy, chemical peel, and Botox. You will be educating and advising your customers about various beauty and personal care products and their usage.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

1. You will be involved in improving conditions of customers’ skin using various beauty care products and methods such as exfoliation, skin warming, masking, scrubbing, facial massage, bleaching, threading, and moisturizing.

2. You will use various methods such as waxing to remove hair from customers’ faces, hands, arms, legs and other body areas as per customers’ requirements.

3. You will provide cosmetic treatment for the feet and toenails as well as skincare up to the knees of your customers.

4. You will provide cosmetic and beauty treatment such as cutting, clipping and shaping fingernails, polishing of the fingernails and massage of the hands of your customers.

5. You will provide makeup services to customers during various occasions such as marriage and Diwali or to actors in theatre, cinema, televisions, etc. or to fashion models using a range of makeup products and methods of applying makeup.

6. You may provide advanced facial and skin care treatment to your customers using methods such as electrotherapy, aromatherapy, body wrap, body polish, Botox, eye rejuvenation, organic facial, laser therapy, etc.

7. You will provide education, advice, and consultation to customers on various beauty and cosmetic treatments, products, and usage of products.

8. You will maintain a safe and hygienic work area.

9. You will keep your workstations sanitized and keep your tools such as brushes, combs, clips, etc. sterilized.

10. You may also promote and sell various beauty care and cosmetic products and services to potential customers.

11. In senior job levels, you may have to manage and supervise the work of a team of Beauticians, hairdresser and stylists, spa therapists and others as well as carry out administrative duties at a salon, spa or similar establishments.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 8 in school – ITI Certificate in Beautician Assistant / Obtain an NSQF Level 3 Qualification as an Assistant Beauty Therapist

Study up to class 8 in school and then do a certificate course in Beautician Assistant from an ITI OR enroll for an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 3 training program in Assistant Beauty Therapist to get a Level 3 qualification certificate. You will get a job as an Assistant Beauty Therapist or equivalent position in a salon or similar beauty care establishment.

Class 8 in school – ITI Certificate in Beautician Assistant / Obtain an NSQF Level 3 Qualification as an Assistant Beauty Therapist – Work experience for 6-12 months – Obtain an NSQF Level 4 Qualification as a Beauty Therapist / Cosmetic Dermatology Technician

Study up to class 8 in school and then do a certificate course in Beautician Assistant from an ITI OR enroll for an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 3 training program in Assistant Beauty Therapist to get a Level 3 qualification certificate. You will get a job as an Assistant Beauty Therapist or equivalent position in a salon or similar beauty care establishment. After 6-12 months of work experience, you can enroll for an NSQF Level 4 training program in Beauty Therapist / Cosmetic Dermatology Technician to get a Level 4 qualification certificate. You will then get a job as a Beauty Therapist / Cosmetic Dermatology Technician / in a similar position.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Do a course in Beautician/ similar field or get on-the-job training – Work in a salon for 6-12 months - Obtain an NSQF Level 4 Qualification as a Beauty Therapist / Cosmetic Dermatology Technician

Study up to class 10. Then you can do a course in Beautician / Skincare / Pedicure & Manicure/ Makeup services / a similar course or even get on-the-job training while working in a salon. Then work for 6-12 months as an Assistant Beauty Therapist or in an equivalent position in a salon or similar beauty care establishment. After 6-12 months of work experience, you can enroll for an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 4 training program in Beauty Therapist / Cosmetic Dermatology Technician to get a Level 4 qualification certificate. You will then get a job as a Beauty Therapist / Cosmetic Dermatology Technician / in a similar position.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Obtain a Certificate in Beautician/Hair & Skin Care/Hair & Beauty Care/Similar from an ITI OR do a Diploma in Beauty Therapy/Similar course

Study up to class 10. Then you can do a Certificate course in Beautician / Hair & Skin Care / Hair & Beauty Care / Skin & Beauty Care/ a similar course from an ITI or you can do a Diploma in Beautician/similar course to get a job as a Beauty Therapist / Cosmetic Dermatology Technician / in a similar position.

Class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies – Obtain a Certificate in Beautician/Hair & Skin Care/Hair & Beauty Care/Similar from an ITI OR do a Diploma in Beauty Therapy/Similar course – Work for 3-4 years as a Beauty Therapist in a salon – Obtain an NSQF Level 5 Qualified

Study up to class 10. Then you can do a Certificate course in Beautician / Hair & Skin Care / Hair & Beauty Care / Skin & Beauty Care/ a similar course from an ITI or you can do a Diploma in Beautician/similar course to get a job as a Beauty Therapist / Cosmetic Dermatology Technician / in a similar position. After 3-4 years of work experience in a salon as a Beauty Therapist / in a similar position, you can obtain an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 5 Qualification as a Beauty Advisor.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with any subject combination as per scheme of studies - Diploma in Beauty Therapy/Similar course

After completing class 11-12, you can do a Diploma in Beauty Therapy / Beautician / Hair & Skin Care / a similar course from a vocational training institute to get a job as a Beauty Therapist / Skin Care Specialist / Beautician / Cosmetic Dermatology Technician / in a similar position.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with any subject combination as per scheme of studies - Diploma in Beauty Therapy/Similar course – Work for 5 years in a professional salon as a Beauty Therapist or Beauty Advisor or in a similar position – Obtain an NSQF Level 6 Certification in Aesthet

After completing class 11-12, you can do a Diploma in Beauty Therapy / Beautician / Hair & Skin Care / a similar course from a vocational training institute to get a job as a Beauty Therapist / Skin Care Specialist / Beautician / Cosmetic Dermatology Technician / in a similar position. Then after having worked for at least 5 years, you can obtain an NSQF Level 6 Certification in Aesthetician to get senior-level jobs in a professional salon or similar other establishments.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with any subject combination as per scheme of studies – B.Voc. in Beauty & Wellness or in a similar field

After completing class 11-12, you can do a Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc.) in Beauty & Wellness / or in a similar field from a vocational training institute to get a job as a Beauty Therapist / Skin Care Specialist / Beautician / Cosmetic Dermatology Technician / in a similar position.​​​​​​​

Required Qualification & Competencies 

1. After Class 8 in school, you can study for a certificate in Beautician Assistant from an ITI or a similar course. Then you can grow higher up in your career through obtaining training and qualifications under National Skill Qualification Framework.

2. After Class 10, you can study Beautician / Hair and Skin Care / Hair and Beauty Care / Skin and Beauty Care / a similar course in an ITI or a vocational training institution. Thereafter you can grow higher up in your career through obtaining training and qualifications under National Skill Qualification Framework.

3. After Class 11-12, you can do a Diploma in Beauty Therapy / Hair & Skin Care / or in a similar field. Thereafter you can grow higher up in your career through obtaining training and qualifications under National Skill Qualification Framework.

4. After Class 11-12 in any stream, you can also do a 3-Year B.Voc (Bachelor in Vocation) in Beauty and Wellness or other related fields from vocational or other institutions.

1. You should have interests for Artistic Occupations. Artistic occupations mostly involve working with creative ideas, art, and designs.

2. You should have interests for Realistic Occupations. Realistic occupations involve more practical and hands-on activities than paperwork or office work.

3. You should have interests for Social Occupations. Social occupations involve helping or assisting others; these involve working with and communicating with people to provide various services.

4. Knowledge of how to provide customer services. This includes understanding customer needs, helping customers to use products and services, answering customer queries, handling customer complaints and grievances, and evaluating customer satisfaction.

5. Knowledge of how to provide various assistance and services to others. This includes looking after the needs of individuals, understanding what they need and provide all assistance at home or elsewhere.

6. Finger Dexterity - The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.

7. Manual Dexterity - The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.

8. Active Listening – Skills in giving full attention to what other people are saying, understanding the points being made by others, asking questions, etc.

9. Skills in communicating effectively with others in a local or indigenous language such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Bengali, Assamese, etc.

SPECIALISATION TRACKS IN THIS CAREER

Cosmetologist / Aesthetician / Esthetician

Cosmetologists, often referred to as Aestheticians or Estheticians, provide advanced beauty and cosmetic treatments to customers which may include electrotherapy, aromatherapy, body wrap, body polish, Botox, eye rejuvenation, chemical peel, organic facial, laser therapy, etc. to improve the conditions of the skin as well as enhance the look and beauty.

Eyelash Technician

Eyelash Technicians are experts in improving the beauty of the eye by using various methods such as eyebrow waxing and threading, eyebrow tinting, etc. They may attach false eyelashes or eyelash extensions.

Nail Technician

Nail Technicians are specialized in providing all kinds of beauty services to enhance and embellish customers’ fingernails and toenails such as pedicure and manicure, nail art, fitting artificial nails, etc.

Make-up Artist

Makeup artist apply various types of makeups to customers on special occasions or as per their requirement; apply makeup to theatre, film, television and other performance artists; apply makeup to fashion models using different methods and makeup products.

CAREER GROWTH

With work experience, you can grow to become a Senior Beauty Therapist, Cosmetologist, Beauty & Wellness Advisor etc. You may also offer your services independently to customers who are known to you or through mobile apps such as Urban Clap. You may also venture out on your own and set up your own saloon.

Salary Offered  

1. As an apprentice or trainee, you will be earning about Rs. 5000-7000 a month.

2. After 1-3 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 9,000-12,000 a month.

3. After 5-10 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 15,000-22,000 or more a month. Besides, many salons allow you to accept tips from customers

4. Senior and experienced Beauticians may earn about Rs. 20,000-50,000 or even more a month.

5. You can earn much more if you set up your own salon or become an independent Beautician. Many celebrity and rich customers ask for services at home. You can earn a lot. 

MONTHLY EARNINGS IN INDIAN RUPEES

1. Entry level: 0 - 2 years of work experience

2. Junior Level: From 1 to 12 years of work experience

3. Mid Level: From 5 to 20+ years of work experience

4. Senior Level: From 10 to 25+ years of work experience (there could be exceptions in some high-end technical, financial, engineering, creative, management, sports, and other careers; also in the near future, people will reach these levels much faster in many careers and in some careers, these levels will have no meaning as those careers will be completely tech skill driven such as even now, there is almost no level in a Cyber Security Expert’s job)

Future Prospects 

The future is bright for this career. Awareness of beauty care and wellness products/treatments is at an all-time high in India. As per the report of IBEF (India Brand Equity Foundation), the beauty, cosmetic and grooming market will reach US Dollar 20 billion by 2025. In India, the herbal cosmetics industry is also driving growth in the beauty business and it is expected to grow at a rate of 12% over the next few years.
