About Career 

As an X-ray technician, you will be trained in creating X-ray images of various body parts of humans using radiographic equipment under the guidance of a Radiologist. You will be responsible for keeping patients safe from radiation, positioning the X-rays correctly so that it has the right exposure, regulating the intensity and duration of X-rays, etc.

As an X-ray technician, you will be working with doctors and helping them to diagnose ailments and identify areas inside the human body that are affected by diseases or injuries.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

As an X-ray technician, you will be:

1. Determine patients' X-ray needs by reading requests or instructions from the doctor.

2. Preparing and setting up the X-Ray room for patients and keeping the X-Ray room clean.

3. Positioning X-Ray equipment and adjusting controls for setting exposure factors, such as time and distance.

4. Positioning the patient on examining the table and setting up and adjusting equipment for obtaining an optimum view of specific body areas as requested by the doctor.

5. Explaining the procedures to patients for reducing anxieties and obtaining cooperation.

6. Using beam-restrictive devices and patient-shielding techniques to minimize radiation exposure to the patient.

7. Making exposures necessary for the requested procedures; will be rejecting and repeating work that does not meet established standards.

8. Collecting and maintaining records of patients examined, examinations performed, patient medical histories, views taken, or technical factors used.

Who is Eligible

Class 12th Pass

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies – Diploma in Radiology Technician from ITI.

After completing class 10, you can apply for Diploma in Radiology Technician from any ITI (Industrial Training Institute) or another similar institute.

After completing class 12, you can obtain NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 3 certification in X-ray technician from any vocational institute or another similar institute. However, if you have completed class 10 in school then also you can obtain this qualification under certain situations. For this certificate, you need to be 18 years of age.

After completing class 12, you may obtain NSQF Level 3 certification in X-Ray Technician with a minimum of 3 years of work experience as an X-Ray Technician, before obtaining NSQF Level 4 certification in Radiology Technician from any vocational institute or another similar institute. For this certificate, you need to be 18 years of age.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

1. After class 10 in school if you are not much inclined to higher education, and then you may apply for a Diploma in Radiology Technician from any ITI or other vocational institutes.

2. If you have completed class 12 in school, then you may obtain NSQF Level 3 qualification in X-Ray Technician from any vocational institute or another similar institute.

3. You can also obtain NSQF Level 4 qualification in Radiology Technician after completing class 12 in school (class 10 under some certain situations) or obtain NSQF Level 3 certification in X-ray Technician with 3 years of experience in this field.

3. Conventional- You should have interests in Conventional Occupations. Conventional occupations involve repetitive and routine tasks as well as fixed processes or procedures for getting things done. These occupations involve working more with data, systems, and procedures and less with ideas or creativity.

4. Oral Comprehension - The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

5. Oral Expression- The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.

6. Customer Service-   Knowledge about how to provide customer services. This includes understanding customer needs, helping customers to use products and services, answering customer queries, handling customer complaints and grievances, and evaluating customer satisfaction.

7. Active Listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, understanding the points being made by others, asking questions, etc.

8. Critical Thinking- Skills in the analysis of complex situations, using logic and reasoning to understand the situations and take appropriate actions or make interpretations and inferences.

Career Growth

As an X-ray technician, you may find limited career opportunities. From a Trainee, one can become an X-ray technician and then a Senior X-ray technician. In a large hospital, one can get into a supervisory role.

Salary Offered  

1. As an apprentice or trainee, you will be earning about Rs. 7,000-10,000 a month.

2. After 1-5 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 10,000-17,000 a month.

3. After 8-10 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 20,000-30,000 or more a month.

7. Updating and using relevant knowledge - Keeping updated with the latest knowledge relevant to your fields of work and using the relevant knowledge in getting things done.

8. Handling and moving objects and materials - Using hands or otherwise using physical strength to handle and move objects and materials; maneuver, install, lift, place, manipulate, etc.

1. As the years pass by, with better education, degree, and experience, X-ray technicians can expect more salaries and sophisticated equipment. In India, the Healthcare market is expected to reach US$ 372 billion. It is also expected that the CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of the hospital industry will grow by 16-17% and reach Rs. 8.6 trillion.

2. These Statistics imply that there will be an X-ray Technician employed in the coming years, which means more services will be provided to the aging population. There are several new labs, and hospitals opening in India.
