About Career
As a Banana Worker, you will be working in banana plantations. You will be involved in cleaning and plowing the land and sowing the banana tissue culture seedlings or rhizomes for growing the banana plants. In commercial plantations, banana plants are grown from tissue culture or rhizomes, which are the main stems of the plant. It usually takes 9 to 12 months before harvesting the fruit.
You will be involved in applying fertilizer to the soil, watering properly, pest control, and nurturing the growth of the plants. You will clear the growth of other plants and vegetation in the banana plantation area as well as harvest the fruits when it is the right time.
Key roles and responsibilities:
As a Banana Worker, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities: -
1. Ensuring that the plantation soil is adequately fertilized and moist.
2. Pest control in the banana plantation.
3. Keeping the banana plantation area free of growth of other plants and vegetation.
4. Preventing and curing plant diseases.
5. Harvesting banana crops at the right time.
6. Handling the post-harvesting tasks such as sorting of the bananas, storing them in the right condition, packing, labeling, etc.
Career Entry Pathway
Class 5 in school – Fieldwork as a farm hand – Obtain an NSQF Level 4 Certificate.
After completion of Class 5 in school, you can find work in a banana plantation as a farm hand (you must attain a minimum age of 16). Then after having a minimum of one year of experience, you can apply to obtain an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 4 Certificate. For this Certificate, you will need approximately 140 hours of training. Then you can get a job as a Banana Worker on a banana plantation.
After completion of your Class 8 in school, you can enroll in a training program for Banana Workers in an ITI or other training institute (you must attain a minimum age of 16 before you can take up the training). After completion of your training, you can get a job in a banana plantation.
Required Qualification & Competencies
You may not need any formal education or training to work as a farmhand in a banana plantation. However, it is better to complete Class 5 in school before trying to get a job. Ideally, you should obtain an NSQF Level 4 Certification for Banana Worker to get a good job. You may also do a training course for Banana Workers after completion of your class 8 in school.

Competencies Required
1. You should have an interest in Realistic Occupations. Realistic occupations involve more practical and hands-on activities than paperwork or office work. Realistic occupations often involve physical activities for getting things done using various tools and equipment.
2. You should have good hand-eye coordination.
3. You should have knowledge of Mathematics – arithmetic and other mathematical disciplines and their applications.
4. Factual knowledge of banana plantations and related matters such as quality of seeds, irrigation methods, pests & diseases, soil health, harvest &postharvest methods, market prices, climatic conditions, etc.
5. You should have manual dexterity – The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
6. You should have Physical Stamina - The ability to exert yourself physically over long periods without getting winded or out of breath.
7. Skills for sowing, weeding, irrigation, harvesting, etc.
8. Skills for soil sampling and testing, selecting pesticides, etc.
9. You should have Skills for Communication in Vernacular Languages - Skills in communicating effectively in writing as well as verbally with others in a local or indigenous language such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Bengali, Assamese, etc.
Career - Job Opportunities & Profiles
You will find work at different commercial banana plantations, either owned by individual farmers or by large farmer co-operative firms who are contracted by corporate enterprises such as Desai Fruits and Vegetables and KeventerAgro. These companies are involved in the sales and export of bananas.

You can grow within the banana plantation work roles such as Senior Worker, Supervisors, etc.
Salary Offered
Banana workers earn between INR 250.00 to INR 360.00 per day depending on the produce. The production also depends on precipitation levels and climatic threats/conditions thereby indirectly affecting their earnings. The earnings differ from state to state.

You can grow within the banana plantation work roles such as Senior Worker, Supervisor, etc. You may also become a banana farmer yourself later or get into organic farming, which is a fast-growing sector.
