About Career
As a Barber, you will provide haircutting, hairdressing, hair grooming, hair styling, and various other related personal grooming services to people. Apart from these, you will also provide services such as hair coloring, hair trimming, applying hair spa, saving, shampooing, hair washing, and similar services.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
As a Barber, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities: -
1. Keeping work stations clean and sterilize various items used for your work such as combs, brushes, scissors, razors, etc.
2. Informing clients about the various services that are available and advising them as to which services would be good for them.
3. Providing haircutting, hairdressing, hair trimming, hair coloring, and other services as per the desire of the clients.
4. Saving of beards of your customers, if they require such a service.
5. You will perform scalp massage, massage of head and neck on customers. You will provide hair spa services.
6. You will cut and trim hair as well as creating various patterns using different techniques such as club cutting, notching, slicing, point cutting, thinning, feathering and perming.
7. You will perform hairstyling and hairdressing using various techniques and materials such as hair gel, creams, lotion, oils, etc.
8. You will perform hair coloring using different types of hair colors which are temporary and semi-permanent; you will also perform bleaching or tinting of hair.
9. Taking good care of the clients and making sure that they are satisfied with the service provided.
Career Entry Pathway
Class 8 in school – Obtain an NSQF Level 3 qualification as an Assistant Hair Stylist
After completion of Class 8 in school, you can to a training program leading to an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 3 qualification as an Assistant Hair Stylist and find a job in a salon or similar facilities. The Level 3 qualification requires 150 hours of training.
Class 8 in school – Obtain an NSQF Level 3 qualification as an Assistant Hair Stylist – Work for 0-12 months as an Assistant Hair Stylist – Obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification in Barber
After completion of Class 8 in school, you can to a training program leading to an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 3 qualification as an Assistant Hair Stylist and find a job in a salon or similar facilities. The Level 3 qualification requires 150 hours of training. After obtaining this Level 3 qualification, you can work in a salon or similar establishment for 0-12 months and then obtain an NSQF Level 4 qualification in Barber.
Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Obtain a Certificate in Beauty Culture & Hair Dressing / Hair & Beauty Care / Hair & Skin Care / similar field from an ITI or a vocational training institute
After your Class 10 in school, you can enroll for a Certificate course in Beauty Culture & Hair Dressing / Hair & Beauty Care / Hair & Skin Care / a similar course from an ITI or a vocational training institute.
Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Obtain a Certificate in Beauty Culture & Hair Dressing / Hair & Beauty Care / Hair & Skin Care / similar field from an ITI or a vocational training institute – Work for 4 years as a Hair Stylist / Barber – Obtain an NSQF Level 5 qualification in Senior Barber / Senior Hair Stylist
After your Class 10 in school, you can enroll for a Certificate course in Beauty Culture & Hair Dressing / Hair & Beauty Care / Hair & Skin Care / a similar course from an ITI or a vocational training institute. Thereafter work at a salon or similar establishment for 4 years as a Hair Stylist or Barber. After having this experience, you can obtain an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 5 qualification in Senior Barber / Senior Hair Stylist.
Required Qualification & Competencies
1. After Class 8 in school, you can do an NSQF Level 3 training program in Assistant Hair Stylist.
2. If you have completed class 10 in school, you can enroll for an ITI Training program in Hair Dresser / Hair and Skin Care / Barber / Hair Cutter / Beauty Culture & Hair Dressing / Hair & Beauty Care or a similar trade. You can do a similar program from other vocational training institutes as well.
3. Some private institutes and reputed beauty and personal care services companies offer Diploma programs in Hair Styling / Hair Spa / Hair Dressing/ similar programs.
COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
1. You should have interests for Realistic Occupations. Realistic occupations involve more practical and hands-on activities than paperwork or office work. Realistic occupations often involve physical activities for getting things done using various tools and equipment.
2. You should have interests for Conventional Occupations. Conventional occupations involve repetitive and routine tasks as well as fixed processes or procedures for getting things done.
3. You should have interests for Enterprising Occupations. Enterprising occupations involve taking initiatives, initiating actions, and planning to achieve goals, often business goals.
4. You should have knowledge about Personal Care Service - Knowledge of how to provide various assistance and services to others. This includes looking after the needs of individuals, understanding what they need and provide all assistance at home or elsewhere.
5. Active Listening Skills - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, understanding the points being made by others, asking questions, etc.
6. Service orientation - Skills in or a keen interest to help and assist people.
7. Critical Thinking Skills - Skills in the analysis of complex situations, using of logic and reasoning to understand the situations and take appropriate actions or make interpretations and inferences.
8. Finger Dexterity - The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
9. Manual Dexterity - The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
10. Arm-Hand Steadiness - The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
11. Visualization - The ability to imagine how something will look after it is moved around or when its parts are moved or rearranged.
12. Inter-personal Ability: The ability to build and maintain good relationships with others at workplaces and elsewhere.

CAREER GROWTH
As a Barber, you can grow in your workplace from a trainee to Assistant Hairstylist and then to a Barber / Hair Stylist in 1-2 years. With 4-5 years of experience, you will be a Senior Barber / Hairstylist. You may also open your own salon or serve customers independently at their homes. If you work well and your work becomes popular, you can grow very fast.
Salary Offered
1. As an apprentice or trainee, you will be earning about Rs. 3000-5000 a month.
2. After 1-3 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 8,000-10,000 a month.
3. After 5-10 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 12,000-25,000 or more a month. Besides, many saloons allow you to accept tips from customers.
4. However, if you become reputed among your customers, saloons may want to retain your services at a much higher salary, in the range of Rs. 40,000-50,000 or more a month.
You can earn much more if you set up your own saloon or become a barber for the celebrities. Your income will be very high. There are barbers who earn more than a lakh per month serving celebrity clients.

3. Mid Level: From 5 to 20+ years of work experience
4. Senior Level: From 10 to 25+ years of work experience (there could be exceptions in some high-end technical, financial, engineering, creative, management, sports, and other careers; also in the near future, people will reach these levels much faster in many careers and in some careers, these levels will have no meaning as those careers will be completely tech skill driven such as even now, there is almost no level in a Cyber Security Expert’s job)

Providing advice and consultation with others - Giving advice or consultation with others about various issues, conceptual matters, know-hows, scientific matters, products or services.
Updating and using relevant knowledge – Keeping updated with the latest knowledge relevant to your fields of work and use of the relevant knowledge in getting things done.
Future Prospects
Prospects of Barbers and Hairstylist are quite encouraging. Wellness Industry is growing tremendously nowadays. People are very much into hairstyling and grooming. As per FICCI and EY, suggestions, the Wellness Industry will grow at a CAGR (The Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 12% for the next 5 years, and also will reach an estimated high of Rs. 1.5 trillion by 2020. These figures show a bright future for people in this career.
