About Career
As a Patient Care Assistant, you will be responsible for assisting patients in bathing, dressing, feeding, monitoring and documenting vital signs, and performing basic laboratory tasks. You will be involved in maintaining a conducive environment in various departments of hospitals/home settings.
As a Patient Care Assistant, you will be trained in maintaining activities of the patient’s daily living, patient comfort, safety, and health needs. You will be working in coordination with doctors nurses and other healthcare providers and deliver the healthcare services as suggested by them at a hospital or home setting in shifts, nursing homes, clinics, long-term care facilities, and GPs’ (General Practitioners) offices.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
As a Patient Care Assistant, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities:
1. You will be maintaining records of patient care, condition, progress, or problems for reporting and discussing observations with supervisors doctors, or physicians.
2. You will be providing help to patients such as helping them in moving in and out of beds, baths, wheelchairs, or automobiles and with dressing and grooming.
3. You will be keeping patients mentally healthy by entertaining them or conversing with them.
4. You will be planning, purchasing, preparing, or serving meals to patients, as per the prescribed diet chart.
5. You will be checking, monitoring, and recording the pulse, temperature, and respiration of patients.
6. You will be providing massage to patients or you will apply treatments or preparations such as liniment, alcohol rubs, or heat-lump stimulation.
7. You will be taking or accompanying the patients to the doctor’s chamber or on other trips outside the home, assisting, and companionship.

Career Entry Pathway
Class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies – Apply for a Certificate in Medical Nursing Assistant / Diploma in General Duty Assistant / Diploma in Medical Nursing Assistant.
After completing class 10, you can apply for a certificate in Medical Nursing Assistant / Diploma in General Duty Assistant / Diploma in Medical Nursing Assistant from any vocational institute or other similar institutes such as Symbiosis College of Nursing, Delhi Paramedical and Management Institute, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, IIMT Group of Colleges, Agra, etc.
After completing class 8, you can either apply for a certificate in General Duty Assistant/a certificate in Patient Care Assistant from any vocational institute or other similar institutes such as Symbiosis College of Nursing, Delhi Paramedical and Management Institute, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, IIMT Group of Colleges, Agra, etc. This certification program is usually 6 months in duration and you need to be 20 years of age before applying for this program.
After completing class 12, you can apply for an Auxiliary Nurse and midwife from any vocational institute or other similar institutes such as Symbiosis College of Nursing, Delhi Paramedical and Management Institute, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Christian Medical College (Vellore), Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research - [JIPMER], etc. This course is usually 2 years in duration.
Required Qualification & Competencies
1. After your class 10, you can apply for a Certificate in Medical Nursing Assistant / Diploma in General Duty Assistant / Diploma in Medical Nursing Assistant.
2. If you have completed class 8, you can apply for a Certificate in General Duty Assistant / Patient Care Assistant.
3. However, after your class 12, you can apply for an Auxiliary Nurse and midwife program.

4. Personal Care Service- Knowledge of how to provide various assistance and services to others. This includes looking after the needs of individuals, understanding what they need, and providing all assistance at home or elsewhere.
5. Active Listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, understanding the points being made by others, asking questions, etc.
6. Service Orientation - Skills in or a keen interest in helping and assisting people.

After your Diploma/Certification program, you can get job opportunities as a General Duty Assistant Patient Care Assistant, or Auxiliary Nurse and midwife. You will be employed in:

Career Growth
As a Patient Care Assistant, you can only be promoted if you pursue a higher level of education. The best option for you will be to become an independent Patient Care Assistant.
Salary Offered
1. At the beginning of your career, you may earn about Rs. 5,000 – 6,000 per month.
2. With 3-5 years of experience, you may earn about Rs. 6,000-8,000 or even more per month.
3. With 8-10 years of experience, you may earn about Rs. 8,000 – 12,000 or even more per month.
4. In Government jobs or Government hospitals, you may look forward to a much higher earning. You will begin with about Rs. 15,000 a month. You will get yearly increments and you may look forward to earning about Rs. 40,000 – 50,000 a month after 15-20 years of experience.
