As a Home Health Aide, you will be assisting and helping people at home who are suffering from a chronic disease or ailment recuperating from a surgical operation, or who have some type of disability condition. You may also assist, and help elders who might be suffering from old age-related recurring medical conditions or loss of partial or full mobility.
Your primary role will be to monitor the health conditions of such people at home, who might be referred to as patients. You will be checking basic health parameters of the patients, such as body temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure, etc. You will ensure that they take medicines on time as per physicians’ prescriptions. You will help them to use devices such as inhalers and home vaporizers (used for relief from asthmatic conditions), blood glucose monitoring devices, etc. You may also administer injections and provide the first level of healthcare when there is an emergency. You may also help patients do basic physical exercises suggested by physicians or physiotherapists.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
As a Home Health Aide, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities:
1. Maintaining records of patients’ health and medical conditions by checking basic parameters such as pulse rates, blood pressure, body temperature, blood glucose level, etc.
2. Providing the first level of healthcare at home if there is an emergency that requires transfer to hospitals.
3. Providing help to patients such as helping them in moving in and out of beds, baths, wheelchairs, or automobiles.
4. Administer medicines and injections.
5. Dressing wounds, applying medical ointments, etc. if required.
6. Applying medical or other ointments, creams, etc. for improving health conditions or medical conditions.
7. Helping patients to use various medical devices as prescribed by physicians such as inhalers, vaporizers, glucose monitoring devices, etc.
8. Helping patients to do basic physical exercises if suggested or prescribed by physicians or physiotherapists.
9. Keeping patients mentally healthy and conversing with them.
10. Taking care of patients’ hygiene and grooming needs such as bathing, dressing in clean clothes, etc.
11. Assist patients to eat and drink.
12. Taking or accompanying the patients to the doctor’s chamber, hospitals, or on other trips outside the home; assisting, and companionship.
Career Entry Pathway
Class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies - Apply for any Certificate / Diploma Course in Home Health Aide.
After completing Class 10, you can apply for a Certificate / Diploma program in Home Health Aide from any vocational institute or other similar institutes like Bhakti Vedanta Hospital & Research Institute, All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, VIVO Health Care, Tech Mahindra School of Nursing, etc. These courses are 1.5 to 4 months in duration.
After completing Class 10 or Class 8, you can obtain NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 4 certification in Home Health Aide from any vocational institute or other similar. For this certificate, you need to be 18 years of age.
Required Qualification & Competencies
1. After completing class 10, you can apply for a certificate / Diploma program in Home Health Aide.
2. You can also obtain NSQF Level 4 certification in Home Health Aide, after Class 10 or Class 8 in certain cases if you are not inclined to higher education.

Competencies Required
1. Realistic- You should have an interest in Realistic Occupations. Realistic occupations involve more practical and hands-on activities than paperwork or office work. Realistic occupations often involve physical activities for getting things done using various tools and equipment.
2. Social- You should have an interest in Social Occupations. Social occupations involve helping or assisting others; these involve working with and communicating with people to provide various services; these may involve educating and advising others.
3. Problem Sensitivity - The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
4. Personal Care Service - Knowledge of how to provide various assistance and services to others. This includes looking after the needs of individuals, understanding what they need, and providing all assistance at home or elsewhere.
5. Active Listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, understanding the points being made by others, asking questions, etc.
6. Service Orientation - Skills in or a keen interest in helping and assisting people.
Career - Job Opportunities & Profiles
1. After completing your Diploma or Certificate or after obtaining an NSQF Level 4 qualification, you can enroll yourself with various agencies that provide trained Home Health Aides to patients’ homes or with Elder Care agencies. You may also get work from private hospitals who may suggest their patients take your services after they are discharged from hospitals.
2. Some people may also like to employ you directly at your home. You can get this kind of opportunity either through references or through apps/websites that list Home Health Aide or similar services.
Career Growth
There is not much scope for career growth unless you acquire higher-level qualifications and change your career. When you are experienced, you can earn more. This is the only growth you can expect, that is, growth in your earnings.
Salary Offered
1. As a Home Health Aide, you may earn about Rs. 200-300 per 8-10 hours of a shift in a day. You may also have to work night shifts.
2. After 10-12 years of experience if you are working at wealthy peoples’ homes, you may get about Rs. 500-1000 per shift of 8-10 hours.
3. Some people may offer you to work exclusively for their house. In this case, you may get a monthly salary. If you have 0-10 years of experience, you may expect to get about Rs. 5,000-8,000 a month. When you are experienced, you may get anything between Rs. 10,000 – 25,000 or even more per month depending upon where you are working. Wealthy people offer you higher salaries.

4. Working directly with people - Working directly with people to offer services, assist, etc.

1. With increased focus on patient-centered, integrated, and collaborative care, the healthcare industry is likely to see a major increase in job vacancies for certified Home Health aides. In India, the Healthcare market is expected to reach US$ 372 billion. It is also expected that the CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of the hospital industry will grow by 16-17% and reach Rs. 8.6 trillion.
2. This shows that the Healthcare industry is growing rapidly and creating several employment opportunities. Therefore demand for more health care support workers is expected to rise.
