Description

Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, the Hon'ble Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Housing and Urban Affairs, launched the 26th Energy Technology Meet at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi in the presence of eminent guests. During the 26th Energy Technology Meet, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri spoke about the country's successes in the green and clean energy sectors, cast light on the nation's accomplishments and future goals.

Exceeding Biofuel Blending Objectives

Shri Hardeep Singh Puri announced that India had exceeded its biofuel blending targets, which are an important component of the country's green energy policy. The initial target was to achieve a 10% biofuel blend rate by November 2022.

India exceeded expectations by reaching this milestone five months ahead of plan. Furthermore, the ambitious aim of 20% biofuel blending, which was originally set for 2030, has been pushed back to 2025. This extraordinary advancement illustrates India's dedication to cleaner energy sources and lower environmental effect.

Taking on Energy Issues: Availability, Affordability, and Sustainability

In his speech, Minister Puri highlighted the importance of managing three crucial challenges in the energy sector: availability, accessibility and sustainability. He stressed that despite these challenges, India has not allowed the issue of sustainability to hinder its progress. Instead, the country has accelerated its efforts to build a more sustainable energy future.

Overcoming Self-Imposed Boundaries

Shri Puri acknowledged that India imposed a 20% blending limit primarily because automakers said blending beyond this limit would require significant engine modifications. However, India has now managed to reach 20% blended fuel and is working vigorously to set up ethanol and biogas production plants. Additionally, the automobile industry is making significant technological advancements, as evidenced by the recent launch of the hydrogen-powered green bus by India Oil. This development marks a transition to a new technological mindset with the introduction of electric cars and flexible fuel vehicles.

India's Growing Energy Demand

Minister Puri highlighted India's growing energy needs and predicted that the country's energy needs would serve as an engine for future economic growth.

  • Currently, India is the third largest consumer of oil in the world.

  • Third largest consumer of LPG.

  • The fourth importer of LNG

  • The fourth largest refiner.

In addition, it is the fourth largest automobile market in the world. India's energy demand is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years, making the country a key player in the global energy landscape.

India's Global Impact

Minister Puri highlighted that India will account for 25%  of the growth in global energy demand over the next two decades. With the creation of the Biofuels Alliance, he expects a significant increase in the global biofuels market, forecasting growth from $92 billion to $200 billion in the near future. However, he stressed that this is only the beginning of the biofuel story. The introduction of 10% ethanol blending has already led to significant savings in India's import bill, and these savings are expected to increase with the 20% blending target.

Energy Consumption as an Indicator of Growth

The minister underlined that a reliable indicator of a country's growth is energy consumption. India's energy consumption is currently three times the global average, further highlighting the country's rapid development and growth. Finally, he called for more collaborative events like the Energy Technology Meet, where countries are encouraged to participate and benefit from valuable discussions on sustainable energy solutions.
