EXAM PATTERN

The institute publishes the BITS HD 2026 exam pattern on its official website and in the information brochure. Candidates planning to appear for the examination are advised to carefully review the exam pattern before applying.

Test 1 is mandatory for all candidates. Applicants seeking admission to higher degree programmes—except M.E. in Sanitation Science, Technology and Management and M.E. Software Systems—are required to appear for BITS HD Test 2. In contrast, candidates applying specifically for M.E. Software Systems or M.E. in Sanitation Science, Technology and Management must appear for a separate, dedicated test.

Details of The Admission Test

Test I: Duration: 45 Minutes & Total No of questions: 30

The test I is compulsory for all students who are applying for any of the Higher Degree programs of the Institute and will consist of the following sections:

a. Core Mathematics - 15 Questions

b. English Language Skills & Logical Reasoning -15 Questions

c. Total 30 Questions to be asked 

Test II: Duration: 105 Minutes & Total number of questions: 70

Test II is for students applying to all Higher Degree programs except those who are applying for M.E. in Environmental Engineering and M.E. in Software Systems. This paper will attempt to test the student’s grasp of the basic subjects of his/her discipline. The discipline courses of different degree programs of BITS have been used for constructing the questions.

Test for Software Systems: Duration: 60 Minutes & Total number of questions: 50

This special test for Software Systems is required for only those students who are applying for M.E. Software Systems.

Test for M.E. Environmental Engineering Duration: 60 Minutes & Total number of questions: 50

This special test for Environmental Engineering is required for only those students who are applying for M.E. Environmental Engineering.

Marking Scheme

a. For all the above tests, the questions are of objective type (multiple choice questions); each question with four answer choices, and only one is the correct choice. Each correct answer fetches 3 marks, while each incorrect answer has a penalty of 1 mark. No marks are awarded or deducted for questions not attempted. While the candidate can skip a question, the computer will not allow the candidate to choose more than one option as the correct answer.

b. All the questions and instructions for the test will be in English only.

c. The questions will be selected at random from a large question bank. Different candidates will get different question sets. An expert committee will ensure that the question sets are of comparable difficulty level, content, question type, etc.
